Chapter 04

Kaelen’s POV

Gina stood there staring at us with her mouth open.

Aurora pulled away fast, her face flushed. “Gina,” she whispered softly, sounding like she was trying to hold back tears. “I…I need to get my things, I'm moving to a hotel, now.”

She kept rambling, looking panicked and guilty that she'd been so close to me. No doubt she still thought I was Gina's boyfriend.

Yeah, right. Boyfriend indeed, if only she knew of my temporary arrangement with Gina.

Gina glanced at me curiously for a second and I rolled my eyes.

Then she walked over and put her hand on Aurora’s shoulder.

“Oh my god, Aurora, it’s okay. I know you're an emotional mess right now. You’ve been through so much with the wedding.”

“No, I really can't stay at your place…it's inconvenient and…."

"Aurora, you just got into town…”

“Please!" Aurora insisted, finally wiping the tears off her face. “I have to leave."

Watching her shivering and tear rolling down her face, I wanted to find that rogue wolf and break his arms and legs. No one was allowed to bully my little ducking but me.

Aurora looked so helpless, just like she did twelve years ago when she met me and made that proposition that now haunted me every night.

I could see her tugging down on her sleeves and looking everywhere but at me and biting her lips in that way she usually did when she was nervous.

I knew she'd bruise them if she didn't stop. Her skin was so soft and delicate.

I wanted to comfort her but I knew she still thought Gina and I were really together, she wouldn't agree to that.

What if she knew Gina wasn't really my girlfriend? What if I told her about the real reason Gina and I had to put up this show? Would she leave or stay?

Twelve years was such a long time and I thought I'd be over Aurora. But seeing her now, I wasn't ready to take the risk of letting her go again.

She looked like she wanted to just disappear from me. God, did she really hate me so much she was having nightmares about me and now wanted to move to a freaking hotel?

Thankfully, Gina must have seen her shivering because she hugged her. “It's okay, we’ll get you to a hotel. Let’s just get home, okay? Are you hurt, sister?”

I stepped closer. “No, she’s not. Thank God I got there in time before the wolf could do anything. I think it was one of the rogue wolves that roam the city. They’re always looking for young women to prey on. They do a lot of illegal drug deals too.”

“Oh my god, that happens around here?” Aurora asked.

Gina shrugged. “Welcome to this little town. It’s not all cute like the small werewolf town we grew up in, but I like my job instead of being some waitress back at our pack. It’s so boring there.”

Aurora looked at her. “And you knew it was so dangerous down here?”

“Well, welcome to my world. Kaelen has been keeping me safe.”

I cleared my throat, “let's get back to the car.”

Gina nodded, "Yeah, let's go home and pack your stuff. The date is ruined anyways.

We all piled back into the car and the ride home was quiet. Aurora wouldn’t look at me and she kept biting her lips and rubbing her arms like she was trying to keep warm.

When we got back to the condo, I parked the car and grabbed some work documents from the trunk. “I had a few things to sort out at the office. But I’ll work from the dining room,” I told them, “I can't leave you girls after what happened."

Gina nodded at me casually. “Thank you for rescuing my sister."

“You’re welcome. I just want to make sure you both are okay.”

Aurora stood there awkwardly as I opened the door and we got in.

I could see her eyes on me the whole time and when I glanced her way, she blushed and looked away shamefully.

Damn it, I still wanted to check her body and make sure she wasn't injured. Her skin was so perfect and her curves…she'd really grown into them.

No wonder that rogue caught her scent, any werewolf could smell her delicious scent from a mile away.

Gina thankfully pulled her away to the living room while I set up my laptop on the dining table.

“I'll help my sister pack and drive her to a hotel, then I'll be back, baby," she winked at me and walked off.

I could hear them packing across the hall and I wondered which hotel she'd go to. I would have to ask Gina just to make sure she's safe there.

Gina started talking about her work as a coroner and as usual, she seemed really happy. “I’m glad I’m finally doing something I love. What will you do now?”

“I'll get a job," Aurora sighed. “I promised Mom I would never join the police or anything dangerous like that. That was the one thing I really wanted to do. But now that my engagement with Sylvester is over, I kind of feel useless.”

Gina hugged her. “Of course you’re not useless! You’ve got that tracking thingy you do. You’re so good with it. Maybe you could find work here in town. It’s a lot different from home. People are willing to hire women here.”

“Yeah, right,” Aurora said. “Not like I could ever find a place that needs what I do. It’s so hard to explain to people what I actually do.”

Gina’s eyes suddenly lit up. “Oh my god, wait! I think I could get you a job.”

“Really?”

“Yes! Kaelen owns a security company. I think you could work for him. At least until you’re ready to go back home. It could help take your mind off things. I’m sure something happened with Sylvester, and even if you don’t want to tell me, I just want to make sure you’re okay.”

“Really?" Aurora asked hopefully.

Gina turned to me, “Kaelen, could you please hire my sister in your company?"

I looked up at her quizzically. “What? Why would I do that?"

Aurora dropped her luggage and walked over to the dining table where I was working, she crossed her arms and looked straight at me.

“So… you hiring?” she asked, her eyes fixed on the laptop and what I was working on.

I closed the tap I was working on and leaned back in my chair. “I don’t have any position open for a waitress in my company.”

“I’m not here to be a waitress,” she said. “I’m here for the security job.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Do you know what we do here? We’re like private investigators. We keep this town safe, you're only going to be a distraction and I’m not ready to babysit another female.”

“I’m good at tracking,” Aurora said. “I want to help.”

There was no way in hell I could let her face any danger. She was too frail and, I couldn't stand her getting hurt. Ever.

“I said no.”

She looked at the screen and said, “I could tell you about them. The Cartel De Imperio.”

I laughed. “You’re bluffing. You know nothing about them.”

“I know everything about them.” She started. “They started in Platinum Pack and they've spread into three different territories, they all have a crab tattoo on the neck, they recruit young werewolves and they sell drugs at The Vincio Club in town. Oh, and they have a loan shark team too.”

My jaw dropped. “I’ve been chasing these guys for years and found nothing. How the fuck did  you know all of that, little duckling?”

Aurora crossed her arms and smirked. “Told you I was useful.”

I still had no desire to risk her safety on some stupid job.

But if she knew all of that about the cartel, then maybe giving her a desk job wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

Chapter 06Aurora's POV The next couple of days were awkward and problematic but kind of nice. I started working at Kaelen’s security company as a tracker and profiler. The pay was actually really good, and for the first time in a long time I felt like I had some kind of purpose. Kaelen was still his usual annoying self though. He kept calling me “little duckling” just to piss me off. He’d lean over my desk and make stupid comments about my typing or how I held my coffee. But he also listened when I gave him leads. It was annoying how good we worked together. That morning we got into the elevator together for a brief meeting and he wouldn't stop staring down my blouse and wrist where I hid the mating mark beneath lots of bracelets and long sleeves. “Stop staring at me,” I muttered. “Why do you always wear these ugly long sleeves, anyways? What are you hiding?" "That's not your business, stop staring!” “I’m not staring. I’m just wondering how someone so small can be so annoyin

Chapter 05 Aurora's POV I was about to get a job as a tracker. It was both a nightmare and a dream come true. Finally, I could start doing one thing I've always loved, catching bad guys. Cartel De Imperio was the rogue werewolf gang linked to my father's death years ago, finding them had been my obsession until my mother made me promise I wouldn't chase them on my own. Now, with Kaelen and his security firm, I would help bring them down and stop other wolves from getting hurt. But then, working with Kaelen didn't seem much like a sweet dream. It was a day after I'd gotten into a hotel and finally left Gina in her apartment with him. Kaelen insisted that he didn't promise me any job but I could come for the interview later today. But I knew I was good at what I did and maybe, just maybe, Gina would put in a good word for me too. After all, she was his girlfriend. The thought alone made me feel a lump in my throat. I was happy for my sister. Although she seemed a little unhap

Chapter 03Aurora's POV What the hell was that? Why did I have that stupid dream? And why the heck was Kaelen standing there watching me? For a second, I actually wanted to cry in his strong arms and let him hold me but he was a douchebag and my sister's boyfriend. “What…what are you doing in my fucking room?!” I snapped at him. “You were screaming so loud in your sleep. I had to check if you were okay.” “I wasn’t!” I lied. “Then how come I heard you moaning my name?” he asked, “and why were your hands between your legs?” That was when I realized my legs were spread and I could feel the dampness on my thighs. He was right, I was soaking wet. I quickly closed them and jumped up. “Please leave…” But I didn't get to finish when he touched my face and murmured worriedly, "are you really okay, though? You feel feverish.” I was sweating alright, but my fever had nothing to do with my health but everything to do with that silly dream.Being so close to him now, I could feel t

Chapter 02Aurora's POV I watched Gina smiled up at him and I almost vomited. This couldn't be real. Was this a prank?! Did my sister somehow find out about him and bring him back to haunt me?I stood there like an idiot, staring at my worst enemy standing naked in my sister’s kitchen while Gina hugged him like he was the best thing since spiderman. He'd grown so big that I could feel my wrist burning as my eyes traveled down to his sculpted chest and toned legs.My brain short-circuited. “He’s your…your boyfriend?” I choked out shakily. Gina pulled back from Kaelen’s waist and grinned like this was this shocking scene was the most normal thing in the world. “Yes, his name is Kaelen.”Then she turned to him with a sweet smile and gestured to me, "this is my big sister Aurora.” Kaelen finally took his eyes off my body and cleared his throat awkwardly. “Nice to meet you,” he said, all deep and smooth. I growled inwardly and hissed. “Indeed.” Gina blinked between us, confus

Chapter 01Aurora's POV Whoever came up with the idea of a big layered white dress for weddings didn’t do such a great job. I swear, the thing was trying to murder me. First I couldn’t get the stupid corset loose enough to pee, and then I kept stepping on the hem. It was supposed to be the happiest day of my life, my wedding day. I was finally going to marry Sylvester Andrews, the guy I had loved since I was a kid. But right now I was mostly just sweaty, frustrated, and ready to burn this dress. “Aurora! You have to get out of the bathroom, you’ll ruin your makeup!” Kate called from outside the stall. “I think this stupid dress wants to kill me!” I muttered, yanking the fabric down so I could finally breathe. I stepped out and Kate arched her brow at me. “It’s your wedding day. Stop swearing and get dressed. I’m sure Sylvester is already waiting at the altar for you and the whole pack is assembled.” “Yeah, yeah,” I said, smiling despite everything. Sylvester was everyt
