Layla

“Mate.”

For a second, I honestly thought I had imagined it. But then every pair of eyes turned to me. The laughter, the music and the chatter was gone. Hundreds of eyes just staring at me. And for the first time in my life, I was seen.

Not as a servant or as a background shadow but as the center of their world. Only, it didn’t feel like being seen but iy felt like being hunted.

Whispers sliced through the silence.

“The cursed prince found his mate?” someone gasped.

“She is human!” another shrieked, like I was a cockroach on their food.

Then an absolute asshole yelled, “One is cursed and the other is a human slave. What a joke!”

Excuse you, sir. You are the joke.

I looked at the man standing next to me. He was the infamous Cursed Prince? Because wow. Midnight-black hair, burning red eyes, and a sharp jaw sharp that could put the king's sword to shame… Why did no one tell me the most feared wolf in the realm was so hot? I thought he would look like a literal monster, considering the rumors.

But dear lord… he wasn’t monstrous. He was delicious?

Like food.

Ugh. Focus, Layla. Fo-cus.

You cannot eat him. He is not food.

So why did he smell like dessert?

Okay, I’m officially losing my mind.

Again, an idle bitch spoke, “A slave? How dare she!”

“She bewitched him! Kill her before she kills us all!”

Excuse me, who are they talking about?

Me?

Why would they kill me?!

I pouted. It wasn’t my fault, I was his mate. The goddess chose him, not me!

The king’s voice boomed, “How can this be? An Alpha Prince and a human slave? Goddess, what kind of joke is this? Our bloodline has always been mated with stronger, worthy women. There has to be a mistake!”

Heat rushed to my cheeks.

I wanted to vanish. Melt into the marble floor.

I didn’t even fully understand what a mate meant for them or for me. I was more connected to my human side than my wolf one, but I could still feel the mate bond which felt wild and hot, wrapping around my heart, pulling me toward him.

Lucian Stark. The cursed Alpha prince. The wolf no woman survived.

Nineteen had been chosen for him.

Nineteen were buried before the next full moon.

Now the goddess decided I would be the twentieth.

“Kill her!” the king ordered.

“She is climbing the ranks with black magic!” some dead-brain Beta minister yelled. “And look at her! She is the most ugly being I have ever seen!”

Did I ask you to look at me? Close your eyes if my face offends you.

And if I had he rescources and power to summon a witch, I would have long left the werewolf realm to enter the human realm where atleast I would be accepted.

Women snickered.

“So ugly.”

“So useless.”

“She must be the spawn of some witch!”

I wanted to scream that I hadn’t done any magic. I didn’t even know what was happening. But my throat refused to open. My body shook as they pointed and shouted as if my existence was some crime I never meant to commit. Usually, I just listen from one ear and threw away from the another. Today, the cruel words were hitting my heart like direct arrows. It was paining me... Even more than the whips I endured today.

Then, something startling happened.

Lucian moved and stepped in front of me as if shielding me.

And said, voice like thunder,

“She. Is. Mine.”

The world froze.

No one dared move. Even the king looked like his soul left his body.

The Cursed Alpha Prince never spoke.

He was known for silence.

Yet today, he spoke against the king himself—his uncle Vance, the man who raised him after his parents died because of his curse, the man who protected him all his life.

“Anyone who touches her,” Lucian said, “dies by my hand.”

Wolves bowed their heads. Who would dare challenge him? He was the strongest wolf of the century.

Commander of all armies. The king’s deadliest weapon.

And me? I was his fated mate.

I stood behind him, trembling like a weak slave was suddenly protected by the one everyone feared.

They said I would die soon, like the other nineteen.

Maybe I would.

But did it matter?

Honestly, my life had already been worse than death. If I died...atleast I would die as somebody. As Lucian Stark's mate.

The high priest stepped forward. “Your Highness, you cannot mark her. She is human. You are pure blood. Marking her would be folly. Please, reject her.”

Rejection?

My stomach dropped.

I was a weak human. If he rejected me, I would publically and painfully explode like a cheap firecracker.

What a humiliating way to die.

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for it.

But instead, I heard him say softly—

“Would you let me mark you? Would you be my mate?”

My eyes flew open.

Everyone gasped.

And all I could think was—

Wait. What?

I've a choice?

Layla“Why did you not tell me that you had to come to court?” Lucian asked as soon as the doors closed behind us, his voice calm on the surface but strained underneath.I met his gaze, already knowing there was no answer that would satisfy him. How could I have told him when he had shut himself away, drowning in his own bitterness and refusing to look at anything beyond his wounded pride?“You were busy,” I said quietly. His eyes flared red, the control he prided himself on slipping. “Busy?” he repeated sharply. “We live in the same house, Layla. What could I possibly be so busy with that you could not enter my chambers and tell me you needed me? I have never ignored you.” He paused, his jaw tightening. “I see you as my responsibility.”The word landed like a blow.“Responsibility,” I echoed, forcing my expression to remain neutral even as my chest ached. “Is that what I am to you?”His brows drew together in confusion. “That is not what I meant.”“But that is what you said,” I repli

Lucian“Your Highness, Princess Layla has gone to the palace,” I heard Ser Gregory say as I was still buried beneath a pile of documents, my attention slow to lift until the words truly reached me.I looked up sharply. “What do you mean?”“There is a case being heard before the King today,” Ser Gregory explained, his tone careful, “a woman purchased an edible product from Princess Layla’s shop and later returned with her sick child, claiming the child suffered food poisoning because of the item, and the matter was brought to court instead of being settled privately.”Anger flared in my chest almost instantly, because over such a small matter, she had gone to court without informing me, and the thought that this could be another scheme made my blood boil.“Prepare the horse,” I said without hesitation. As I rode toward the palace, my thoughts were scattered and restless, my nerves stretched tight with unease, because no matter how minor the issue sounded, Layla standing alone before th

Layla“Your Highness,” the housekeeper called out to me just as I was walking through the garden paths that led back to my courtyard. The evening air was heavy with the scent of blooming roses that did nothing to calm the restless unease settling in my chest.I paused and turned to face her. “Yes?”“The Prince has not had his breakfast yet,” she informed me carefully, her voice filled with concern, as though she feared even these simple words might disturb the fragile balance within the palace.I lifted my gaze toward the sky, where the sun had not yet fully disappeared beyond the horizon, its fading light casting long shadows across the marble paths. “Lucian said he would eat in his study,” I replied, my voice composed despite the tightness in my throat, “and he has been working day and night for over a month now.”The housekeeper clasped her hands together, her worry no longer hidden. “Your Highness, the Prince is neglecting his health,” she said earnestly. “He is buried beneath end

“I am sorry, Prince Matthew,” the healer said, lowering his head in regret. It was a month after Arielle’s bandages had been removed that the healers finally understood the full extent of her injuries. The wounds on her face and body could never be corrected, no matter how skilled their hands or how powerful their remedies were. The scars had settled deep into her flesh and would remain there for the rest of her life. Her legs would never regain their strength, and she would never walk again. For the remainder of her days, she would be confined to a bed or carried from place to place by her maids.Prince Matthew nodded solemnly, his face composed. His gaze drifted to Arielle, lying still on the bed, her once beautiful face now ruined beyond correction. His chest tightened painfully as he looked at her, and before he could stop himself, he turned away and walked out of the room. He could no longer bear to look at her. The sight frightened him, stirring fears he did not know how to face

Layla“How is Princess Arielle doing now?” we heard the Queen asking the imperial healer. Arielle was inside the medical room, and every doctor in the palace had been summoned. The air smelled of herbs and blood, and the sound of hurried footsteps echoed through the corridor. It was a shock to everyone that she had fallen from the terrace. The fall had been brutal. The stone path below was unforgiving and her injuries were severe.Lucian and I arrived at the palace as quickly as we could. The entire Stark family was present, along with the Greysons, Arielle’s natal family. The corridor was crowded with nobles, guards, and servants, all whispering in fear and disbelief. Prince Matthew stood beside his mother, the Queen, his posture stiff and his face unreadable. The healer finally stepped out, his expression grave.“Your Majesty, Your Highness,” the imperial healer said slowly, bowing his head. “Her condition is quite severe. We are doing everything we can. She has broken several bones

Layla I was in the store, just like every other day, going through ledgers and checking supplies, when Sora hurried toward me, her expression looked quite uneasy.“Layla,” she said in a low voice, “there is a strange woman asking for you. She is wearing a cloak and hiding her face. I don’t know who she is, but she looks desperate. Ser Lewis isn’t letting her in, but… I think she truly needs to see you.”I looked up at her.“Thank you for telling me, Sora.”I stepped outside the store where Ser Lewis stood like a wall carved from stone. Near him was a woman wrapped in a dark cloak, her face completely hidden. Her hands were trembling as she pleaded.“Please let me meet the Princess,” she begged. “It is very important. I mean no harm to her. I only need to give her a letter.”“Show your face and confirm your identity,” Ser Lewis demanded, his hand already close to his sword.“Respected knight, I cannot,” the woman pleaded, her voice cracking.I stepped forward.“Who are you?” I asked ca
