He said it evenly, and it landed like a door.

“The letter isn’t there,” he said. “No one signed it out. The seals were intact when I opened the archive this morning, and there was no other way into the room. Whoever took it walked through the door.”

His eyes settled on me.

“Very few people had access. You were one of them. Then you told the Alpha King, under your own name, that the original was still in my archive.” His voice hardened. “I have just sworn to the crown that it isn’t.”

I sat forward. "That's not proof of anything, Father. Half this house has legitimate access to that room. The steward. The archivist. Two clerks. Meredith herself has an access record that was never revoked when she left, did you think of that? Anyone could have gone in behind me and lifted it, and now you're sitting there deciding it was me because I'm the one standing in front of you.""You're right."

  • Marked By The Rogue Alpha   Chapter 87: The Answer She Shouldn't Know

CloverThe summons came at half past nine, and I took my time going down.I already knew what it was about. He'd found out I'd gone around him to the crown, so I was about to sit through an hour of my father explaining the chain of authority in House Benic while I looked appropriately sorry. I'd done it before. He'd shout in that flat way of his that never rose above conversation, and then in a month, when the King's inquiry brought Meredith home disgraced and stripped of her Luna title, he'd remember which daughter had actually moved.I checked my reflection at the top of the stairs and went down. The archive door came into view on the second-floor landing, and my step slowed as i stared at it.It had been resealed. Fresh wax, my father's ring pressed into it, the cord run through the handles the way it only ever was for a death in the house or an audit from the coalition. The little brass plate where the retrieval log hung had been emptied.I made myself keep walking. His study do

Waiting was the part I'd never learned, so I didn't. I forwarded Alarick's sworn statement to Hayley instead. She called back inside ten minutes, and she didn't bother with hello."I've read it twice," she said, "and I need you to hold still while I'm angry, because there's a lot and it's load-bearing.""Hayley—""Failing wolf. Yes. I documented that. Exhaustion, weight loss, disrupted sleep, bond deterioration, panic episodes, every word of it's in my records because I wrote my records properly." Her breath came short down the line. "Now find me the page where I wrote that your judgment was impaired. Find the line where any healer, anywhere, ever, wrote that Meredith Benic couldn't understand a decision put in front of her. It doesn't exist, Mer. A sick body is not an incompetent mind, and he's welded the two together and sworn to it in front of a King.""He had the messages I sent him. The healer's notes I forwarded—""Which makes him a man with a folder, not a doctor." She bit eac

MeredithThe bond felt different when I woke.Usually Kieran bled through it whether he meant to or not, his temper, his worry, the low hum of him moving somewhere in the house. This morning it sat quiet and even, like a room with the door pulled shut, and when I reached for it I found only calm laid over the top of something I couldn't get under. After yesterday, I actually understood why. He'd promised to fight this beside me instead of around me, so now he was holding the wolf back, keeping all that fear pressed down where it couldn't lean on my choices. It cost him. I could feel that much through the seams.I lay there a moment longer than I needed to, oddly grateful for it.Then I got up, because we had five days, and I'd already decided how I was spending the first one. The crown was sitting in the capital deciding which version of that letter to believe, and I wasn't going to wait at my own window while strangers voted on my marriage. If two letters existed, one of them had

KieranThe crown hadn't laid a finger on us yet, and Silverthorn was already bleeding by morning. The ultimatum had gone through the coalition channels overnight, quietly, the way that kind of thing always travels, and by the time the sun was up our partners had started pulling their arms in close. Silas brought it to me before I'd finished dressing."The Harrow medicine run's been held," he said. "Not cancelled. Held. Their steward sends regret and says the roads are 'uncertain' this week.""The roads are fine.""The roads are coalition-controlled, Alpha, and that's the point he's making without making it." He didn't look up from his tablet. "And Ostmark's put a line in writing. If the Luna refuses the crown, they won't risk their standing keeping our route open. They'd sooner lose our trade than lose the King's good opinion."So it began without a single sanction signed. A shipment we needed sitting on someone else's dock, a road that might close, partners who'd smiled at me a week

MeredithI turned on him before the word had finished leaving his mouth.I'd been drawing breath to answer the summons myself, and he'd said it over the top of me, the way a man does when fear has got to his tongue ahead of his sense."No to what," I said, low, mindful of the room. "The hearing, or the part about me?""You don't walk into the capital without Silverthorn at your back." His voice stayed level, but the bond carried what his face wouldn't, the wolf pushing right up under it, restless and afraid. "Not when they've written down plainly that they mean to cut you off from every wolf who'd stand for you."Castien didn't step in. He watched us, and I understood why. How Kieran handled me telling him no was worth more to the crown than anything I'd say in an interview. So I took the phone out of Kieran's hand and read the conditions for myself. Then I looked at Castien. "How long would I be under this protection?""Until the inquiry closes.""And if I wanted to leave the capital

MeredithKieran’s words hung in the air like a sentence already passed. We leave for Silverthorn at dawn. The arrangement wasn’t just ink and blood and arguments anymore. I was actually going to leave with him. The reality of it settled over the room like weight pressing down on everyone standing t

MeredithSix days had passed since I agreed to the arrangement, and I still didn't know the Alpha's name.I'd spent those days imagining every possible kind of man my father could have hidden from me. Old and desperate for an heir. Cruel and looking for someone he could control. Politically dangero

MeredithThe Benic estate looked exactly the way I remembered it. Grand iron gates, sprawling gardens that someone else maintained, and the main house rising three stories high with windows that caught the late afternoon sun. I'd grown up here, spent eighteen years learning how to be the perfect da
