Sable's POV

I ran.

Branches tore at my arms, my dress catching on something and ripping loose without me stopping to check what. Ivy was ahead of me, weaving through the trees like she'd memorized every root and rock out here, throwing glances back to make sure I hadn't fallen behind.

"Don't look back," she said. "Looking back slows you down."

I looked back anyway.

Two shapes broke through the tree line behind us, low and fast, eyes catching the moonlight the same way the first rogue's had. Then a third joined them, further off but closing the gap fast.

"Ivy…"

"I see them." She didn't slow down. "There's a ridge up ahead. We get past it, we're close enough to the Hollow that they'll send more than just me."

"And if we don't get past it?"

"Then you better hope you can fight."

I didn't have an answer for that. I never fought anything in my life. I spent ten years learning how to duck, how to go quiet, how to disappear into a room so nobody had a reason to hit me. None of that was going to help me against three rogues built to kill.

The ground sloped up hard, and my legs burned climbing it, lungs screaming for air I couldn't catch fast enough. Ivy reached the top first and spun around, bow already drawn, an arrow knocked before I'd even cleared the last few feet.

"Get behind me," she said.

I didn't argue.

The lead rogue hit the ridge a second later, and Ivy's arrow caught it clean through the shoulder. It didn't slow down. Rogue wolves this far gone on bloodlust didn't feel pain the way normal wolves did, not until it was too late to matter.

She dropped the bow and pulled her knife instead, ducking under the wolf's first snap and driving the blade into its side. It howled, twisted, caught her arm with its teeth before she could pull back. She cried out but didn't let go of the knife, wrenching it upward until the wolf finally went limp and dropped.

The second one was already on her before she fully shaken the first one off.

"Ivy!"

I grabbed the closest thing I could find, a fallen branch thick enough to actually do something, and swung it as hard as I could into the second rogue's ribs. It barely reacted, just turned its head toward me instead, a low growl building in its throat.

That was worse. Now it wanted me instead.

It lunged, and I threw myself backward, hit the ground, felt the air leave my lungs as I scrambled to get my arms up before its jaws closed on something they shouldn't.

Then it just stopped,mid-lunge, like something had grabbed it out of the air. A second later I understood why. A wolf twice its size had slammed into its flank, teeth locking around its throat, and the rogue didn't get up again.

More shapes came over the ridge behind the new wolf, four, maybe five, moving with the kind of coordination that told me they'd fought together before. One of them shifted mid-stride, fur pulling back into skin, until a man stood where the wolf had been a second earlier, broad-shouldered, moving toward Ivy like he already knew exactly what he would find.

"You're bleeding," he said to her, crouching down to check the bite on her arm.

"I noticed." Ivy nodded toward me, still on the ground, still trying to remember how to breathe normally. "She's the one I found. Rogues came in packs for her, Rook. That's not normal, not this close to Ironclaw's border."

Rook looked over at me for the first time. Steady, calm, the kind of face that gave away nothing even in the middle of a fight that had just ended. His eyes moved from my face down to my collarbone, to the mark still sitting raw and red above the neckline of my torn dress, and something shifted behind his expression, quick enough that I almost missed it.

"Where'd she get that?" he asked, voice even, though he hadn't looked away from the mark since he spotted it.

"Ceremony," Ivy said. "Tonight. She says the Alpha used the Words on her."

Rook was quiet for a second too long.

"That's not something Alaric Thorne does for just anyone," he said finally.

"You know him?" I asked, my voice coming out rougher than I meant it to.

"Everyone in the Hollow knows Ironclaw's Alpha." Rook stood, crossing the space between us in a few steady steps, and crouched down in front of me instead of looming over me the way I half expected. "Can you walk?"

"I think so."

"Good. We're not staying out here longer than we have to. Wherever those rogues came from, there could be more." He held out a hand, and I hesitated for half a second before taking it, letting him pull me up. His grip was steady, careful in a way I hadn't expected from someone who just tore a wolf's throat out with his bare teeth. "You're safe for now. That's all I can promise you tonight."

"Safe from what, exactly?"

"That's the question we're all going to want an answer to." He glanced at Ivy, then back at me, and something in his voice sharpened. "Rogues don't hunt in packs unless somebody's paying them to. And somebody doesn't pay three rogues to chase down one omega unless she's worth something."

I didn't have an answer for that. I didn't feel worth anything, not standing in the middle of a forest in a torn dress with a brand burning into my skin and blood that wasn't mine drying on my hands.

"I'm nobody," I said. "I was just an omega in Ironclaw. Nothing special."

Rook looked at the mark on my collarbone one more time, and this time he didn't hide the way his jaw tightened.

"That mark says otherwise," he said. "Come on. We'll figure out the rest back at the Hollow."

He turned to lead the way, and that was when I heard it, faint under the mark's steady ache, a low hum against my skin, warm instead of burning, like something inside me had just woken up and didn't plan on going back to sleep.

Sable's POVSela's words followed me into my tent that night and were still sitting in my chest when Ivy shook me awake the next morning."Up," Ivy said. "We're starting knife work today.""What time is it?""Early enough that you shouldn't be asking me that." She tossed something at me, and I caught it on instinct, a knife, handle first, the blade catching the dim morning light. "Eat later. Get up."I dragged myself out of the tent, the weight of the blade unfamiliar in my hand, my grip already off according to the way Ivy frowned at it the second she saw me holding it."You're holding it like you're scared of it," she said."I am scared of it.""Good. Means you're smart. Now hold it right anyway." She adjusted my fingers with quick, practiced movements. "Thumb here, not wrapped all the way around. You want control, not a death grip."I copied the grip, and the blade sat steadier in my palm after that, though it still felt wrong somehow, like I was holding something that belonged to

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 12

Sable's POVYarrow sent me back to camp with more questions than I walked in with, and no real answers to go along with them. I spent the walk back turning her words over ‘he stopped halfway through’ trying to figure out what that even meant for someone like me.By the time I reached the fire pit, the sun had started dipping low, and the camp had shifted into its evening rhythm. Someone was cooking something over the flames that smelled better than anything Reva ever let me eat. A few wolves sat scattered around, talking low, glancing my way and then quickly not glancing my way, the same dance I'd gotten used to over the past few days.I found a spot near the edge of the fire, far enough from the crowd to not feel like I was intruding, close enough to actually feel warm."You're the one Rook picked up."The voice came from behind me, flat, not really a question. I turned and found the woman from earlier, the one Ivy had pointed out on our walk,Sela, the one who said no to an arranged

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 11

Sable's POVRook brought me over to Yarrow's tent right after the midday meal, not giving me much time to think of an excuse to put it off. Not that I had one. I wanted answers as much as anyone else did at this point. The old woman was sitting cross-legged outside her tent, sorting dried leaves into small piles when we walked up. She didn't look up right away, though I got the feeling she noticed us long before we reached her."Rook," she said, still sorting. "Took you long enough to bring her by.""Been a busy couple of days.""Mm." She set the leaves aside and finally looked up, studying me with sharp eyes that didn't match the rest of her, tired and lined as she looked. "So you're the one who healed Bram with your bare hands.""I don't really know what I did," I said. "It just happened.""Things like that usually do, at first." She waved a hand toward the ground in front of her. "Sit. Let me have a look at you."I sat, cross-legged like her, close enough that I could smell the dri

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 10

Sable's POVRook found me near the fire pit an hour later, watching me the way he watched everyone else get sized up since I arrived."Bram tell you anything useful?" he asked."Not really. Mostly that whatever happened to me last night isn't going away.""Figured as much." He nodded toward a log near the fire. "Sit. We need to talk about how things work around here, since you're planning on staying."I sat, mostly because my legs still felt shaky from the sleepless night. "I didn't realize I had a choice about staying.""You do. Nobody's forcing you to be here." He stayed standing, hands loose at his sides. "But if you're staying, you need to understand what that means, because it's not like Ironclaw. Nobody's going to hand you a bowl and tell you to scrub floors because that's your rank.""Then what do I do?""Whatever needs doing. Same as everybody else." He crouched down, picking up a stick and poking at the dead ash in the fire pit, more out of habit than purpose. "You train. Com

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 9

Sable's POVI fell asleep faster than I expected that night, worn out from the walk around camp and everything Ivy had told me about the tent full of rogue gear. My body just gave out somewhere in the middle of turning it all over in my head. The dream came fast and clear, clearer than dreams usually get.I was back in Reva's kitchen, standing over the sink with a bowl in my hands, except the bowl kept filling with water no matter how many times I tipped it out. Water spilled over the edges, ran across my fingers, pooled on the floor around my bare feet. I tried to stop it. I turned the bowl upside down, shook it, set it as far away from the tap as I could reach. It kept filling anyway. The water climbed higher, past my ankles, past my knees, cold enough that my whole body ached with it. I called out for someone, though I couldn't say who, and nobody answered. The water kept rising until it covered my chest, until it reached the mark on my collarbone, and the second it touched the bra

  • Marked and Cast Out, She Came Back Untouchable    Chapter 8

Sable's POVI woke up stiff on a bedroll that smelled like someone else's sweat, sunlight cutting through a gap in the tent flap right across my eyes. For a second I forgot where I was. Then my wrist ached where the old man had grabbed it, and everything came rushing back.Ivy was already outside when I crawled out, sharpening a knife against a whetstone like it was the most normal thing in the world to do before breakfast."Sleep okay?" she asked, not looking up."Not really.""Yeah, the first night's rough for everybody." She slid the knife into a sheath at her hip and stood, brushing dirt off her knees. "Come on. I figured I'd show you around before people start staring at you like you're some kind of exhibit.""They already stare.""Fair. Maybe this'll cut down on it a little."We walked past the fire pit from the night before, cold ash and half-burned logs the only sign anyone had been there. A woman crouched near it, stitching a tear in a leather vest, and she nodded at Ivy with
