MAYA

Moonridge Academy Grounds, Night After the Trial

I was exhausted.

My boots dragged across the stone path, every step echoing louder than the last. The cold bit through my jacket, but I couldn’t feel much of anything anymore. Not after what we’d seen.

What we’d survived.

Kaia walked beside me in silence. The moon was already dipping behind the eastern towers, casting long shadows over the courtyard as we neared the fork where students split off toward their dorms.

We hadn’t said a word since returning. I wasn’t sure what to say.

“So…” she finally murmured, pulling her braid over her shoulder. “Still think that was just a simulation?”

I let out a hollow laugh. “I think we almost died.”

“Yeah.” She nodded, face solemn. “Same.”

We stopped at the fork. Kaia headed towards the werewolf quaters—her dorm.

“I’ll see you tomorrow?” she asked, softer now.

“You better,” I said. “Don’t disappear on me.”

She smirked faintly, then stepped in and pulled me into a quick, tight hug. “Get some re

MAYABy the time we reached the Academy gates, the sun was already climbing over the eastern spires, casting golden light across the rooftops and melting the last of the frost on the cobbled walkways.Lucien stopped a few paces from the entrance and turned to me, expression unreadable.“This stays between us,” he said again, his voice quiet but firm. “Just you and Kaia.”I nodded. “I remember.”For a moment, neither of us moved. The air between us felt stretched—like there was something else he wanted to say, but didn’t. Maybe couldn’t.“Thanks,” I said finally, my voice small but sincere. His eyes softened slightly. “You don’t need to thank me, Maya. Just stay safe.”Then he turned and walked away, his coat sweeping behind him like a shadow retreating into the light.I stood there until he disappeared down the path. Then I turned and headed for the east wing of the student quarters, trying to think of what to say to Kaia. If she hadn’t already filed a missing person report on me, I’d

Lucien – Thorne Estate, StudyThe moment she stepped into the room, the air shifted. Not from power—though I could still sense it faintly thrumming beneath her skin like something caged—but from something rawer. Human.Maya was trying to look composed, but I could see the cracks. The tension in her shoulders. The questions burning in her throat.Talen glanced at her, then at me. “I’ll give you two some space.”He didn’t wait for a response. Just nodded once and disappeared down the corridor, shutting the study door softly behind him.Silence settled like ash.Maya folded her arms, jaw tight. “So. You're just going to stand there and act like this is normal?”I kept my voice calm. “No. But I am going to tell you the truth.”“Good,” she snapped. “Because I’m due for some. Where am I, really? What did you mean when you said something’s waking up? Why me? And what the hell is going on in that forest?”I watched her carefully. She wasn’t just scared—she was exhausted.“You’re at my estate,

LUCIENI walked into Moonridge feeling quite unsettled, the environment seemed too quietI stepped through the wrought-iron gates and passed under the arched crest carved with runes I could read in my sleep. The Academy stood tall against the silver sky, framed by frost-kissed trees and spiraling towers. But where there should’ve been the distant clash of sparring or student chatter, there was… nothing.Just silence.Odd.Still, I kept walking until I reached the northern wing, where a younger attendant met me and bowed low.“Alpha Thornhart. You weren’t scheduled.”“I’m aware,” I said, handing over the sealed scroll. “This is for the Moonridge Council. Urgent.”“Of course. They’re in chamber three. I’ll escort you.”Moonridge Council ChambersThe circular stone room glowed faintly with floating crystal lights, casting delicate reflections on the curved glass windows. Seated at the table were Headmaster Dorian, High Seer Vael, and Ennar, the Academy’s security liaison—each one older,

LUCIEN.The fire in the war room had long since burned down to embers, but I couldn’t sleep. Not with this disease creeping at the borders like a stormcloud. Not with Maya’s face burned into the backs of my eyes.I sat alone at my desk, the oak heavy with age and claw marks from a time before mine. Maps lay rolled up in the corner. Reports stacked neatly in one pile, messily in another. The quill in my hand hovered over the parchment, stilled by everything I hadn’t said yet.I hated letters. Not because I couldn’t write them. Because they made things real.Because once you inked truth into paper, it stopped being a theory—it became a declaration. A warning. A line in the sand.I dipped the quill and began:To the Esteemed Council of Moonridge Academy,Per my authority as Alpha of the Silverclaw Pack, I am formally reporting an emerging biological and magical threat known in recovered archives as The Gray Fever.Origin: Wolfborne in nature, mythic in lineage. Believed to have been erad
