Kestrel’s POV
The weight of the steel against my back serves as a firm reassurance. “Finally,” I mutter under my breath, pulling the brown leather straps around my chest. It emits a soft whine as I keep adjusting, ensuring the sheath is tight enough. I’m more than ready. As father likes to put it, I was born for this. These animals ripped my mother away from me, and so I get to wipe their species off this earth. With my cold fingers twitching in anticipation, I study my surroundings under the morning dew, keeping track of everyone’s footsteps just to know when something is off. The snap of a branch causes all of us to halt our movement. But we continue moving when we realize it’s one of us. I inhale deeply, and the scent of pine and earth settles into my bones. I’ve grown so used to living in the forest that this feels calming in the strangest way. But that feeling doesn’t last long as I’m forced to feel disgusted when I realize the ‘cursed’ are near. I can smell them. They carry on their repulsive skin the stench of wet fur, and something rotten beneath their surface, something not physically perceived but there nonetheless. Perhaps that’s all the innocent lives they’ve taken. Innocent people they’ve killed, bitten, chewed. Beasts! They’ve thrived for decades, but not anymore, because finally we’re attacking our first pack up east. An area known for having the toughest of them. If we conquer here just like the west, then we’re sure to be feared. “I can smell those cunts,” my father spits, his voice thick with venom. “Fucking keep your head on track, Kestrel. Don’t shame your mother. Kill and don’t stall.” He squats low beside me, his chapped lips twisted, nose wrinkling as if the stench alone can kill him. I hate werewolves, alright, but my hatred is nothing compared to that of my father. Even standing six feet away from him, I can feel the scorching effect of his fury. I wrinkle my nose, a habit I copied from him, but say nothing. Father feeds on fury; I feed on awareness, and fury blinds that, so I keep my head straight, not needing my mind clouded. I flinch as a hand boldly circles my waist. He’s warm this morning… Kissing my neck before settling his palm against my hip, Reid’s thumb grazes the edge of my belt. Then his lips find my cheek, warm and dry. He’s the first right choice I’ve ever made. The first decision father approves of. “We won’t spare any of them,” Reid, my boyfriend of three years, murmurs, his breath stirring a loose strand near my left ear. I reach back to push it in place while nodding, allowing his words to anchor me. “We’ll teach them to run at the word hunter,” I whisper, overflowing with confidence. Because I know we will win. We’ve planned this attack for three months now. And with father’s leadership, we’re more than ready. Our steps are in sync. There’s eighteen of us, but we are skilled enough to take down a pack. It’s all about the mind. If you can get yourself to believe it’s possible, then nothing will be impossible. We lie waiting under the tall, thick grasses, not saying a word to each other, relying on hand signals and facial expressions that get harder to read under the thickening fog. But we don’t need to talk. No, not when silence is our sharpest weapon. We settle quietly, watching familiar, repulsive figures shift around unguarded. Some are eating while others are talking and laughing. They are so loud, too loud to hear us approaching. They don’t look more than fifteen. I follow Reid’s eyes and frown. Shit, they are spread so wide I’d definitely missed half of them. Yes, we’re outnumbered, but we planned for this. At least father did. We don’t question him; we hunt. Questioning a hunt means siding with the beasts, and that’s as good as putting a knife to our throats. The ones near the creek lean lazily against rocks, farther out. It’ll take a few seconds for them to get to us. Shit, I don’t see this working out in our favour, but I know it’s best if we just get this over with. At this point, we’re only waiting for our leader’s signal. Then my father raises his hand, holds it, then drops it. We surge with a loud cry, mainly to put fear in the hearts of our prey. I unsheathe my sword in one smooth motion as I run faster. The knives in my thighs dig into my calf, reminding me of their presence. The first werewolf has barely swallowed his tea when I slam into his abdomen with my boot. He staggers backward with a wheeze, crashing disappointedly into the grass. That’s when the booze in his breath hits me. “Disgusting dog, can’t even do your duty right!” I curse at him, stabbing through his thighs and twisting. That should keep him down for a bit. With a well-calculated turn, I drive the hilt of my sword into the next one’s jaw. The crack of bone sends chills down my spine, but I shake it off. No kills… not yet. I don’t need to kill them when father will do just that. I only help him take them down until I’m bold enough to take my first kill. I fight with everything I’ve got, but they’re fast. Faster than the west and stronger. A lean wolf with sharp eyes lunges at me, her claws slicing through the air. I duck, roll, and then kick her legs out from under her. She tries to jump right back, but the slash of my blade across her ribs keeps her gasping on the ground. On instinct, I reach out to help stop the bleeding, my heart pounding in fright. I don’t want to kill her myself… “KESTREL!” Father’s sharp call reminds me not to show weakness. But my eyes widen the next second when I see her skin hurriedly knitting itself back together. She’s healing? “Pa,” I start, but there’s no need to call, as he already knows. Almost every werewolf that has fallen begins to rise. We look in horror, our chests heaving with exhaustion. They are different. “Shit,” I mutter, backing off as she rises with a feral grin.Kestrel's POVHis voice is sinful, soaked in threat, when he mutters, "I was never leaving, pup."My body tingles at the pet name. I open my mouth but nothing comes out. The smug bastard. Gods, it feels like I've been waiting for this moment, for him to take me... own me. To break me.I hate you so much I want to choke you while you pound that big cock into my wet pussy. No! No... that's not me.But I want you so badly.I watch his every move. He's so unashamed, arrogant devil. Fully aware of the mess he's making of me.He gets on the bed, this time like a monarch claiming a throne. I look away from him as my legs part without permission."Look at me, pup." He growls, his palm gently massaging my thigh. My breathing comes in pants as I turn my gaze back to him, instantly getting sucked up in his ocean eyes."You think you're ready for me now?" he murmurs, eyes dark, voice thick with the kind of heat that could melt the hardest of hearts."I..."But I don't get to finish the sentence a
Kestrel's POVKnox flexes his fingers briefly before slamming his fist into Zane's face.Zane groans falling into the wall, his teeth gets stained with blood as he groans."I warned you!" Knox growls, his chest heaving, his voice filled with rage."She called for me." Zane coughs out, blood dripping down his lips. "Like a bitch in heat. No way I was going to leave her hanging like that."Knox's fist gets stopped by Lucas this time. He'd walked in the exact moment Knox stormed into my room.He stares at Knox silently and as if hearing something we all don't, Knox drops his hand.Leo glares but doesn't get up. He looks like a furious puppy but one who knows it's too small to defeat two big wolves."Get him out of here." Knox barks and Lucas moves, immediately grabbing Leo's arm. Leo attempts to pull away from Lucas but the man is surprisingly very strong and barely moves. He says nothing and just drags him out.The door clicks shut. And suddenly, it's quiet... unpleasantly quiet.Knox t
Kestrel's POVThe cold water does little to nothing in helping me purge the overwhelming heat burning me from the inside.I've done everything, fast, slow, hard. As water sprays above me I remain curled up on the cold floor, praying this heat... whatever it is... will pass. Please stop.Beginning to feel even more sick, I rise from the floor on shaky legs, dragging myself over to the sink.My knuckles look white and wet. I want to curse them – my fingers – for failing to bring me satisfaction. It's been hours, terribly excruciating hours. I'll never beg for the touch of a beast. I'll never have him touch me that way.Eli... "Eli," I whisper against the sink, my tongue quickly turning sour. His name sounds wrong on my tongue like an abomination.I don't do it again because calling him, thinking him only makes me ache for one person more. Why is he the only one my body wants? I could pull a guard in here and just get this hell over with, but deep down I know it won't change anything.Wh
Kestrel's POVI laugh. No, because what else am I supposed to do, believe the dumb shit Knox just spewed?"You think you've successfully turned me into one of you but that's not true. I'm not an animal. I'll never go about looking for who will satisfy a sexual hunger I can never have."Knox pulls away from me. He swallows before pointing at the door."Leave." But then he runs a hand through his hair and mutters, "No, wait. The suppressant. You need to take a heat suppressant." He storms into his bathroom. The sound of cans falling off floods the atmosphere. When he emerges from there, I glare at the small bottle in his hand with confusion."It's for rut but it should help get rid of your heat." He grabs my hand and dumps the cold bottle. His touch is warm and rough but I fail to see any problem with that.Knox frowns. "Take it now!" He commands and I raise a brow."You're suddenly concerned about my well-being? Isn't this a coward's move? You can just slit my throat like a warrior ins
Knox's POVThe sight of Zane pressed to the ground with a sword at his throat doesn't surprise me but the fact that it's Kestrel holding the sword, does.Zane breathes hard, groaning with the blood in his teeth. Kestrel stands above him, heaving with blood soaking her shoulder. The triumphant look in her eyes doesn't last long as a guard suddenly yells. "She's a threat. She must be killed."Kestrel stands back, her eyes widening in fright. It was a clear win and although that seems to scare people, it amazes me.How?She'd not even gotten a strike on me the last time. I know Zane's not that good but she's beaten an alpha with barely any bruise. Even though he's a poorly trained one...still. No Omega has come this far.Aren't... aren't you an omega?"Kill her. Now." Zane's voice is a growl of humiliation as he jumps to his feet. There's a cut along his neck. The blood is enough proof she'd been that close. All eyes turn to me, including Kestrel."Lucas, take her inside." I mutter calml
Knox's POVHer smooth hair is spread over my pillows. I reach out, brushing her cheek."I don't think I've ever seen you smile so much." Kestrel says, sitting on my thighs, caging me on the bed.I lean up, kissing her glowing mark. "I've never felt this happy.""Yeah?" She grins mischievously."Baby," I groan as she grinds down on my hard-on again. "Don't stop." I moan, loving it.Kestrel moans in delight, her body feeling so right against mine. But then I blink and she's gone. The morning sun stabs my eyeballs, pulling an annoyed groan from me as I get out of bed. It's not the first time I'm having a dream like this but it's the first time it feels so real, so pure.I need to find a way to get rid of these dreams. They make it impossible to go a second without thinking about her.I head towards the bathroom but stop, my eyes lingering on the wall. I can still hear her moans, that brain straining whimper. The way she bit down on her lips to stifle her cries of pleasure.Kestrel, the t
