LOGIN"Kai, would you keep that notebook away?"
We were sitting in our usual spot for lunch, the only difference was Kai and his constant scribbling. He kept writing in his infamous notebook like a madman. He would then draw something, scratch his head, cut something and rewrite it in a handwriting only he could understand.
My words didn't fall in his ears.
I picked up a nugget and threw it at him. It hit his head and fell onto his notebook. He paused, picked up the nugget and glared at me before shoving it in his mouth.
"What are you even doing, now?" I tried to read what he was writing.
"The murders," Kai drew something.
I stopped eating.
"What about them?"
"I am seeing a pattern here and yet it is not making any sense."
Things left making sense for me a long time ago, I scoffed at the thought.
I was thankful for Kai not asking questions anymore about my weird behaviour. I had a good sleep last night, there were no whispers.
I was not sure if it was a good thing or just the silence before a big storm.
"What pattern?"
In response, Kai turned his notebook towards me.
"A toddler has better handwriting than you."
He pulled his notebook back, "I had been doing some research, all the victims are of our age."
"We know that already," I waved my hand in the air, "born on full moon, died near full moon."
"Only one victim was from our town, the rest of them were visitors." Kai was not in his usual mood.
"This is not just weird anymore, and wait until you hear about their birth month."
Something was telling me I didn't want to hear it.
"They were all born in January or February."
My lips got dry suddenly.
"How did you get this information?"
"I may or may not have checked some files," Kai smiled with a shrug.
I tried to shake off the weird thought. Maybe I was overthinking, maybe all of it was just a coincidence.
But no matter how much I tried to convince myself, a heavy feeling in my chest was saying otherwise.
The murders were not random.
Our town was no longer safe.
I was brought back to reality when I heard Kai mumbling my date of birth under his breath.
This time, I knew he wrote January in his notebook.
An uneasy feeling settled in my stomach. I grabbed the glass of water and took a small sip.
I was still holding the glass when my mark started burning.
Something shifted around us.
It was not like when Lucien was around, it was different.
A chill ran down my spine.
I was sure we were being watched.
I looked around without creating any suspicions but found everything to be very normal. Only the usual customers were sitting in the cafe, and most of them were students from our college having their lunch.
The glass started vibrating in my hand.
At first, I thought it was me.
Then I looked closer.
The water inside wasn’t still.
It was not the glass that was vibrating, it was the water inside it.
I quickly let go of the glass.
"Are you alright?" Kai had a look of worry on his face.
He checked the area around us.
I nodded in response.
"We should head back. I don't want to be late for the next class."
His eyes stayed on me a second longer than usual.
"Yeah....Sure," Kai didn't argue or ask anything else, but I had a feeling he had noticed something earlier.
There was silence on our way back to college.
Kai was probably thinking about the murders and connecting the dots. While I was thinking about what was happening to me.
I waved Kai bye and was about to start walking.
"Let me walk you to your class."
I raised my brows, "Why?"
"Because it's not safe to go anywhere alone."
I couldn't help but laugh at his response, "In our campus? And since when did you start following rules?"
But the expression on Kai's face didn't change.
"Celeste.." Kai started as we reached in front of the classroom.
"Yeah?"
He hesitated for a second, then he shook his head.
"Nothing."
But the serious look on his face was screaming, it was not 'nothing'.
"Kai, would you keep that notebook away?" We were sitting in our usual spot for lunch, the only difference was Kai and his constant scribbling. He kept writing in his infamous notebook like a madman. Running could never solve anything. It was true. But I spent the rest of the day with Kai...avoiding his questions and running from him was my only option. He got caught up with some college activity and it gave me a free pass to run away from. I was feeling a huge weight of guilt settling on my shoulders but I wanted to figure out everything before dragging anyone else into this mess. Kai and I were already in the parking area when he received a text. Even though he asked me to wait for him here...I decided to do the exact opposite thing. I waited until I was sure he had entered the main college building. The parking ground was almost empty. A few vehicles were parked here and there. Most of the students had already left. I started walking away from Kai's car but my feet stopped on their own once my body realised I was no longer alone. It was surprising how my body knew before my mind about his presence. I licked my lips nervously but stood in my place, waiting for him. “Yo
A sigh left my lips as I closed my eyes to soak up all the rays of the sun touching my skin. Usually, it would make me feel calm, but it was not a usual day. I had been sitting near the fountain for a few minutes now and everything around me felt like a blur. I could see people talking, walking past me, but their words were not reaching my ears. For the first time, I did something I had never done before, I skipped a class. I could already imagine Mom shaking her head in disappointment. Being inside the four walls was taking all the oxygen left inside my body. Being near the fountain, away from others, was the only place that gave some peace to the storm inside my head. The vivid images of what happened in the forest and what could happen in the future kept playing in front of my eyes whenever I closed them. On the other hand, Lucien was nowhere to be found. Weirdly, I felt a pang of disappointment....or maybe I just wanted some answers from him. I moved my gaze f
"Lucien".The name lingered longer than it should have. The name shouldn't feel familiar but it didn't feel like it belonged to a stranger. The man's presence stirred an unknown feeling inside my heart. Maybe the feeling was survival instinct from the dangers lurking around him?I sat on the edge of my bed, staring down at myself.Dried mud clung to the hem of my sky-blue pants, flaking off in small pieces onto the floor. I was too tired to change my clothes. But the brown mud was a reminder of what had happened in the forest. It was not in my head. The forest. The creature, the way it moved. And him.My fingers curled slightly against the fabric. He killed someone.“What was that…” I muttered, more to myself than anything else. The thought of asking Kai crossed my mind.I grabbed my phone but stopped after noticing the time.It was 5 am.Everything about this moment felt wrong.Still, I unlocked my phone and opened the news. There were no headlines, no reports about another death.
There was a sudden shift in our surroundings. The air had gotten more dangerous. We were no longer the only ones standing uninvited on the forest ground.Something was moving behind the trees, something that couldn't be seen, it only showed its presence by the rustling sound of leaves. My eyes finally caught a glimpse of something or someone moving behind the trees at an unnatural speed.I gasped."Shh," the stranger who was hiding me behind himself whispered. The mark on my wrist flared up, and I held it with my other hand, not looking away from the trees."What is that?" I whispered as it circled around us."Something that shouldn't have found you."I felt as though we were trapped. Unknowingly, I took a few steps away from the stranger who was just waiting for the figure to appear. The forest went silent....too silent. I could feel my heart beating loudly.Suddenly, a figure lunged towards me.I gasped, stumbling back, but before I could even process what I was seeing, the stranger
I just wanted to sleep. I felt like I had not slept properly in days, which was not wrong. The mark was not burning anymore....I ran my fingers softly over the mark, remembering his touch. I looked outside at the sky, the clouds were moving slowly....just like the time in the classroom. I glanced at the professor but his words worked as a lullaby. My eyes started getting heavy with every passing moment, the sound of the insects coming from outside was not helping either. "Find it."My eyes opened instantly and I looked around myself. Everything was the same, the students were either listening to the professor or making notes of what he was saying. My breath started getting heavy as I realised the whispers were back...but they were no longer the whispers. They were words, but it felt like a few people were chanting the words over and over again. But find what? I wanted to ask. I started focusing on the voices, hoping they would say something helpful, but the voices were stuck on
