The sharp pain that shot up to my spine awakened me faster than the brightly lit room. The scent of lavender air freshener quickly hit my nose as I sniffled hard.
The previous night’s event replayed freshly in my mind. Gary shielding Elizabeth. The chandelier is crashing on me. The evening vanishes into thick darkness.
“You should be more careful.” The doctor standing next to me said.
I sat up, scanning the room, but there was no sight of Gary anywhere.
“This could have been fatal. You could have lost your baby.” The doctor said calmly.
Baby? Whose baby?
“You didn’t know? You are six weeks pregnant.”
I wanted to jump at the news. Gary and I had been trying for a child in recent times, but nothing had worked out right.
“You are currently malnourished and stressed. Your blood pressure has gone up; this could harm both you and the baby. You need to take a rest and ensure you eat well too.” He said, took a look at my chart, then walked out of the room.
Just then, Gary burst into the ward. He had changed into a fresh set of clothes from the previous night. He looked like he had just gotten out of the shower. Fresh. Tall. Handsome.
“You scared me, Elaine. How do you feel?” The genuine worry on his face reminded me of the man I had fallen in love with.
The man who had promised to always be there for me. The man who had gone down on one knee to ask me to be his woman.
But before me stood the man who had gone back on all of the promises he made to me.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you. Everything happened so fast, I wasn’t thinking.” He said as he pressed my hand to his cheek.
“I understand Gary… I…have something to tell…”
The buzzing from his phone interrupted us. He looked at the screen and turned to me. He needn’t tell me who it was as the guilt on his face gave it away, Elizabeth.
“Hold on. It’s Elizabeth, she… she is having a panic attack.” He said, asking for my understanding.
Who on earth would understand her husband leaving her just to tend to his childhood sweetheart?
“I have to take this, Elaine.” He didn’t even wait for my response and was soon out of the doorway.
I could hear the worry in his voice as she asked her to take a deep breath, and that he was on his way to her.
“Elaine!!” Laura screamed as she rushed into the ward, genuine worry and concern plastered on her face.
“I left the courthouse as soon as I got your text. Are you okay?” She quickly hugged me.
“I’m fine, Elaine. The doctors said I was lucky to have only sustained some bruises.” I said automatically.
Laura looked around the room, as if expecting to see someone. “Where is he?” She hissed.
“Who?”
“Who else? Gary, your HUSBAND.”
“Oh, he had to attend to something urgent.” I wish I were the something urgent he had to attend to. I turned away from Laura, towards the window.
“Don’t tell me… Elizabeth is the “Something urgent?” She yelled.
“What could be more important than his wife in the hospital. Don’t tell me… Elizabeth is the “Something urgent?.”
“No… he had work to do, Laura.” I was tired of covering up for him.
“I have told you, you are too good for him.” She said.
“You have given this man ten years of your life, Elaine. Ten years!” She crossed her arms as she tapped her feet on the floor.
“Let’s just go, Laura,” I said in a low voice. I was too exhausted. Too heartbroken to keep talking.
I had a life growing inside of me; I had to worry about now.
“Can we just go over to your apartment?” I knew that Gary wasn’t returning to our home, seeing as it was the weekend already, and Elizabeth had called.

By the time we got to Laura’s apartment, the pent-up frustration came rushing down my cheeks. I collapsed on the couch in the living room as I wailed uncontrollably.
“Don’t let them both ruin your day, okay.” Laura hugged me tightly as she stroked my hair, her warmth shielding me.
“You need to leave him, Elaine. He doesn’t deserve you.” She said.
“I can’t, Laura, I’m pregnant.”
The silence that followed was deafening. We both sat on the couch for the next fifteen minutes in silence.
“Does he know?” She finally asked me.
“I tried to tell him…”
“He doesn’t know? Your husband is probably cuddling another woman elsewhere while you lie here.” Her veins shot up in her neck.
Her face was red now, and she was trying hard not to lose her temper.
“He will be happy once I tell him. I just need the perfect time.” My voice was calmer now.
“There is no perfect time, Elaine. You need to protect your home, now that you are carrying a baby.”
“I know Laura… but” my throat closed up again.
There was an uncertainty in my voice. I couldn’t hide the doubt in my heart. With Elizabeth’s presence in my marriage, I wasn’t so sure what would make Gary happy.
“ You need to tell him. Only then can you decide whether your marriage is still worth saving.” Laura said.
I agreed with her, but I couldn’t just give up on my marriage just because of a new presence. Our families had given so much for our marriage to happen.
“I will tell him tomorrow, then decide what to do next.”
Elaine’s POV“I have nothing to apologize for, neither will I leave the company or divorce Steve!”Mrs Greyson lifted her hands to slap me, but Steve caught her hands mid air and flung it to her side. “How dare you try to hit my wife?” His brows furrowed deeply, his breath heavy and short as his eyes shot up.“You keep defending this woman,” Mr Greyson finally spoke up but Steve caught him short.“This woman right here is my wife! And you will all respect her.”Mrs Greyson laughed sarcastically as she moved her body, she turned away from us, looking back at the reporters. “For this reason, we have decided to live together in this house, as one big family.” She said, smiling. There was no way I was going to live with them, Lucas included. Steve stepped up and shook his head. “Nothing of such will happen!”Ever since his Grandma took him in fully, he had never lived with his father, step mother and Lucas. I could see the veins popping in his neck as he protested.“This is the best solut
Elaine’s POV“You did nothing wrong. She had it coming.” Steve said as we walked down to Elizabeth’s room.“How dare you show your face here!” Gary lunged forward, but Steve blocked him by pulling me behind him.“She had it coming, and if you don’t fix yourself, I will have to sue her for harassment.”Gary laughed; his veins were popping out in his neck. “You have harmed the Wayne heir. She lost the baby.”I shook as I listened. I hadn’t done anything wrong, but it wasn’t pleasant news either. I stepped forward, my eyes boring into Gary’s.“I have had enough of you and Elizabeth, trying your hardest to take me down with cheap little antics,” I stepped in front of Gary, poking at his chest with my finger. “She suddenly came into the picture, ruined our marriage.”I paused and stepped back from him. Gary’s lips parted, but he said nothing. “She pushed me down the stairs, and I lost my baby!”“You said absolutely nothing all that time, you pampered her, you encouraged her antics. You sly
Elizabeth’s POV“I hate her!” I flung my bag on the couch in the living room, as I stomped my feet around.Everything has ended in chaos; this wasn’t what I had planned. How could everything have gone so wrong? The judges had retracted their decision, claiming it was a mistake, and announced Elaine the winner. All of my efforts have gone down the drain; no matter what I do, nothing works. I picked up my phone to check what the media was saying.“Greyson Corp announced as the winner of the Fashion Runway after a huge mistake?”I knew I had to plan something else; I needed to get rid of Elaine finally. Just then, the door flung open, and Gary stormed in. I bit my lower lip and held my breath in anticipation of his outburst.“You incompetent human!”I took several steps back as he got closer to me, lunging forward as he raised his hand. He stopped midway as though realizing something. “You are lucky, you carry the Wayne heir. I would have really dealt with you.”This was not the same man
Elaine’s POV“Stop them from beginning the runway, Steve.”Steve rushed to the backstage area, and I lifted my dress and followed suit. The announcer refused to delay anymore.“As the model from Greyson Corp isn’t here, the judges can proceed…”“I’m here!”I fixed my dress and walked to the stage. The judges nodded their heads as they exchanged whispers. In the audience, I could see Elizabeth; her glare could cut through one’s skin, and a silent protest escaped her lips.“This is lovely!” One of the judges said. The runway show ended well, Steve and I sat down while we waited for the judges to conclude on the winner.“You need to loosen up; your design was the best.” Steve flashed a smile as he rubbed my knees.“Can everybody come back on stage? We are about to announce the winner.” The announcer said.I knew for a fact that the judges loved my designs; they had all nodded in approval, and all I needed to hear was my name being called. I walked gently to the stage.“You really must th
Elaine’s POVThe beeping of the monitors brought me up from the bed, my eyes shot up as I brought my hand to my stomach. Steve was lying next to my bedside, his eyes were droopy, and his hair disheveled.“Elaine, thank God you are awake.” He brushed his hand against my face, and a small, tired smile crept from the corners of his lips.“You are here?” I replied weakly. The smell of anesthetics shot a bitter taste to the back of my tongue. I sat up gently as my blurred vision finally cleared. “Is the baby okay?”I held my breath as I prayed silently. I couldn’t afford to lose another pregnancy.“Everything is okay, Elaine.” He stroked my hair gently as he smiled. He had lost a considerable amount of weight since I had left a few days ago; worry and concern had worn his face down. I instantly remembered Laura saying he felt sorry, and I should give him a chance.“Is the baby fine, Steve?” My voice was low, but it was loud enough for him to hear the fear and anxiety in it.“The doctor sai
Elaine’s POV“Turn on the news, Elaine!” Laura screamed as she burst into the living room.I grabbed the TV remote and turned it on. “Mr Greyson has disclaimed all allegations about his wife, Mrs Elaine Greyson, who was earlier in the week accused of having an affair and bearing a bastard child.” The newscaster read.“In claims by the board of directors of Greyson Corp, of Mrs Greyson’s child not his, Mr Greyson has promised to resign from the position of CEO if it turns out otherwise.”“Isn’t that great!” Laura hugged me.There was no excitement in me; I had been humiliated, disrespected, and thrown out. Just because he stood before a few people to disclaim the allegations doesn’t make it all right. My grip on the remote tightened as I recollected the events of that day. Steve had asked me to leave without batting an eye; he had looked at me with scorn.I turned the TV off and flung the remote on the couch. “I don’t care about anything he said.”“Calm down, Elaine. It’s not good for
