Se connecterElaine’s POV
The whole ride to the house, I couldn’t stop thinking of ways to make Gary and Elizabeth pay for all I had lost. My years of sacrifice. My baby. My marriage.
The press had not spared me. News of Elizabeth’s pregnancy and my divorce had hit the news. I am sure she had purposely leaked the news to the press.
“You shouldn’t read the comments. People are mean.” Laura warned me as she grabbed my phone from me. But I needed to see what everyone thought of me. What they said about me.
“Laura…” I said sternly.
There was nothing more anyone could do for me. I had lost it all already. A few hurtful words couldn’t break me. So I thought.
“Elizabeth is the real queen.” One comment read.
“Elizabeth did in a few weeks what Elaine Wayne couldn’t do in four years.”
“Barren woman.”
The comments tore at every string of my heart as I read on. The meaner they were, the more my resolve for revenge hardened. My face darkened with rage as I kept reading.
Not a single comment had been on my side. The whole world had criticized me; some had gone as far as saying I had forced myself on Gary.
I slammed my phone on my lap as I looked away. If only I could turn back the hands of time, I never would have accepted his proposal. I never would have given up years of my youth to him. But what was the point of regret now?

Steve Greyson sat on the short couch in the living room. Even though seated, his long limbs were unmistakable. His broad shoulders stood out in the black custom-made suit he wore.
His green eyes were so beautiful to look at. His sharp jawline and icy aura made it hard to maintain eye contact with him. He sat with his legs crossed, slowly sipping the cup of coffee I had offered him.
I had only ever heard of him, but never seen him. In the fashion business world, he was the real deal. Wayne Corporations had always been a rival. On many nights, Gary had complained about how much he wanted Grey Empire gone, as they were setting trends and ruining business for him.
“Mrs Wayne…”
“Miss Elaine Smith, I am divorced now” I corrected with a stiff smile.
“You could have sent an email to me, or better still, sent your Personal Assistant. To what do I owe this pleasure?” I tried to maintain my calm and composure.
“My assistant sent several emails to you, but you left them unanswered.”
I had been too occupied with everything going on, the pregnancy loss, the divorce, and I hadn’t had the time to go through my mail.
“It’s about the land you own on the outskirts of Middletown. Here is my proposal for it.” His Assistant handed me some files.
My father had told me that he had gotten several proposals from Grey Empire about buying the land from him, as that was the only piece left for his Mega Fashion Court Project to launch, but he had refused, saying the land was in my name.
The land had been given to me by my late mother after her passing. Although I had no plans for it yet, I had no plans of selling either.
“I’m not selling,” I said.
“We will double the price there. The land has been left for so many years.” His brows furrowed, but he maintained his calm.
Silence soon fell between us. The world seemed to pause as we both stared deeply at each other. I wasn’t sure what it was, but there was just something about him I couldn’t shake off. Was it his eyes? His aura?
“Is there anything you want in exchange for that piece of land?”
I didn’t want any amount for the land. The land was dear to me, and I wasn’t going to sell it, not for a blank cheque. I looked closely at Mr Steve, his eyes were on me like an eagle waiting to pick its prey.
“I… I am not willing to sell,” I stopped short as an idea came to my head.
“One thing, though. I will only give up the land if you marry me.”
The room fell silent instantly. His assistant looked at him, both eyebrows shot up as he adjusted his glasses. Steve Greyson, on the other hand, remained calm, almost like he hadn’t heard me right.
The Wayne had always hated the Grey empire. This was the perfect revenge and comeback. “Elaine Smith marries Billionaire Fashion CEO Steve Greyson, finally moving on from her failed marriage.” She could picture every blog carrying that headline.
“I have what you need, Mr Steve. You have what I want. Deal?” I didn’t know where I had gotten the idea from. It had just popped into my head.
“I will have my lawyers draft up a contract. It will only last for twelve months.” He said calmly.
“So you are agreeing to it? Nice.” I tried to hide the anxiety in my voice. Did I really just propose a marriage contract with Steve Greyson?”
“There will be some rules to it. It has to play as real, the board, and the press cannot find out that I got into a marriage contract. It will ruin our reputation.” He added.
“Behind public eyes, there will be no romance. No Sex. No entanglement. This will be purely business. You will help me establish myself in the business world.” I wasn’t about to give my heart out to anyone anymore, I needed to focus on taking over as CEO of my dad’s company.
“We have a deal. My lawyers will send the documents to you.” He stood up, his build hovering over mine, he extended his hand, and I couldn’t help but notice how firm and masculine he was.
We shook hands, and he left. I sat back, wondering what I had just started, but there was no time to retract my offer. He was the perfect revenge tool.
The time was ticking, my revenge plan had started rolling, and there was no going back.
Steve’s POVThe rising noise and chaos around took my attention from the business call I was on. “Let’s reschedule. My Assistant will get back to you.” I hung up the phone and looked out the window. The sun had set, casting a golden yellow streak on the window. I dialed the office, but no one answered.“What is going on here?” A young woman lay sprawled on the floor, staff members surrounding her. I took a few steps forward before I sighted Elaine in the middle of it all.She had already gotten a strike from the board of directors; it wasn’t the time for any more drama and chaos. Elaine instantly turned to me, her eyes sunken in as she blinked.“I didn’t do anything.”I recognized the woman to be Elizabeth. The one who had caused an uproar in the media, she had instigated to the public that Elaine was barren.“I would have thought a man of your status would settle for someone more in your league.” She brought herself up and moved to me, “You need to discard her, she wants to hurt my b
Elaine’s POVI paced the hallway as I waited for the doctor to come out. Elizabeth had been wheeled in a few minutes ago, and the doctors and nurses were all attending to her.Steve had stepped out to attend to a business call, and my mind raced with different thoughts. I had gotten married to Steve to take revenge on them both, but I had gotten carried away with the board members, his family, and Vivienne.“You witch.” I turned back to see Mrs Wayne. Gary was standing next to her, breathing frantically as they hurried their pace.“I didn’t do anything…” Before I could plead my case, Mrs Wayne pulled my hair, yanking my head back. I held her hands, trying to force her to let go.“You want to ruin our family. Wasn’t it enough that you couldn’t give our family an heir?” She tightened her grip, and I yelled, calling out to Gary, who just stood watching.Of course, he had always been a mummy’s boy; what did I expect? I finally pushed her off me, shoving her hard on the chair nearby.Gary
Elaine’s POVI had my hands on my head, holding it tight as I paced Steve’s office. “If only everyone would let me be.”“You will do just fine. Your workstation has been arranged.” Steve said.He made no efforts to calm me down; he had opened up his laptop and began working already. “Grant will show you to your work station.” I picked up my bag and left. The whole staff exchanged glances and hushed whispers the minute I walked in. Two girls quietly walked up to, standing arms locked together.“We heard you are the boss’s wife.” The taller one said, hissing afterwards.“Don’t expect any sort of preferential treatment just because you have a relationship with the boss,” the other one added. They both turned sharply, swinging their hair in my face as they walked away.“They love to mark their territory, members pay them no heed.” I turned to see the other staff sitting next to me.“I’m Clara,” she flashed her teeth, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose.“Call me Elaine.”The da
Steve’s POVI picked up my phone for the hundredth time this morning, and I glanced out the window, holding my phone tightly as I reminisced on the event of the previous night.Elaine had caught me off guard with how calm and resolved she was at the event.“Stop tapping your fingers on the table, you look nervous,” I said to her.The earlier barrage of questions from the reporters had shaken her up. This event was very important to Greyson Corp, and it was the first time we were making a public appearance as a couple after signing the marriage contract.“I… I can’t help it. I can feel everyone’s gaze on me. I think it was a bad idea having me here.” She said as she took a sip of the wine.Despite her anxiety, she sat straight on the chair, the way she lifted the wine glass, her grip on it precise and cautious.“You are handling yourself just well. This will be over soon.”I said that too early, as less than five minutes later, my family showed up. Lucas, my stepbrother, who had compet
Elaine’s POVIn a few minutes, Steve had arrived at my house. Unlike his normal way of appearing in a suit, he looked very casual. My dad, upon hearing that Steve was around, rushed out and invited him into his study for a “Small talk.”“How do you plan on taking care of my daughter?” I pressed my ear to the door as I held my breath.I could hear my heart pounding heavily as I listened in; my ears were pressed tightly against the door, picking up bits and pieces of the conversation.I was sure my dad would hound Steve, considering all that had happened, but to my surprise, their small talk ended after fifteen minutes.“We need to leave now so we don’t get held up in the traffic.”I kissed my dad goodbye and left with Steve. After navigating his way for a couple of minutes, we finally pulled up in front of the hospital.“Why are we here?” I blurted out.The sight of the hospital building made my heart race, my palms sweat, and my lips quiver. It was the same place I had lost my baby, w
CHAPTER 9: The Price of being Mrs GreysonElaine’s POV“Steve’s fiancée?” I dropped my drink carefully as Vivienne took a seat next to me.“I was hoping it was a lie when I heard Steve had married someone from the… slum.” She crossed her legs and twirled her hair around. There had been nothing in the news about Steve having a fiancée. How was this woman claiming to be his fiancée?“Vivienne, what are you doing here?” Steve barked.“Did you cancel our marriage arrangement, so you could settle for… less?” Vivienne stood up to face Steve, wrapping her hands around his arm.Steve brushed it off, pushing her off lightly. He took a step back as he turned to me.“Is she really your fiancée? I mean… how could we…”“She is my ex-fiancée. I called off our engagement a year ago.” He moved closer to me, eyes bearing into mine. “You swore to never get married, how could you two have gotten married? I have known Steve for twenty years now, and you don’t seem to be his type of woman.” Vivienne wal
