The whole ride to the house, I couldn’t stop thinking of ways to make Gary and Elizabeth pay for all I had lost. My years of sacrifice. My baby. My marriage.
The press had not spared me. News of Elizabeth’s pregnancy and my divorce had hit the news. I am sure she had purposely leaked the news to the press.
“You shouldn’t read the comments. People are mean.” Laura warned me as she grabbed my phone from me. But I needed to see what everyone thought of me. What they said about me.
“Laura…” I said sternly.
There was nothing more anyone could do for me. I had lost it all already. A few hurtful words couldn’t break me. So I thought.
“Elizabeth is the real queen.” One comment read.
“Elizabeth did in a few weeks what Elaine Wayne couldn’t do in four years.”
“Barren woman.”
The comments tore at every string of my heart as I read on. The meaner they were, the more my resolve for revenge hardened. My face darkened with rage as I kept reading.
Not a single comment had been on my side. The whole world had criticized me; some had gone as far as saying I had forced myself on Gary.
I slammed my phone on my lap as I looked away. If only I could turn back the hands of time, I never would have accepted his proposal. I never would have given up years of my youth to him. But what was the point of regret now?

Steve Greyson sat on the short couch in the living room. Even though seated, his long limbs were unmistakable. His broad shoulders stood out in the black custom-made suit he wore.
His green eyes were so beautiful to look at. His sharp jawline and icy aura made it hard to maintain eye contact with him. He sat with his legs crossed, slowly sipping the cup of coffee I had offered him.
I had only ever heard of him, but never seen him. In the fashion business world, he was the real deal. Wayne Corporations had always been a rival. On many nights, Gary had complained about how much he wanted Grey Empire gone, as they were setting trends and ruining business for him.
“Mrs Wayne…”
“Miss Elaine Smith, I am divorced now” I corrected with a stiff smile.
“You could have sent an email to me, or better still, sent your Personal Assistant. To what do I owe this pleasure?” I tried to maintain my calm and composure.
“My assistant sent several emails to you, but you left them unanswered.”
I had been too occupied with everything going on, the pregnancy loss, the divorce, and I hadn’t had the time to go through my mail.
“It’s about the land you own on the outskirts of Middletown. Here is my proposal for it.” His Assistant handed me some files.
My father had told me that he had gotten several proposals from Grey Empire about buying the land from him, as that was the only piece left for his Mega Fashion Court Project to launch, but he had refused, saying the land was in my name.
The land had been given to me by my late mother after her passing. Although I had no plans for it yet, I had no plans of selling either.
“I’m not selling,” I said.
“We will double the price there. The land has been left for so many years.” His brows furrowed, but he maintained his calm.
Silence soon fell between us. The world seemed to pause as we both stared deeply at each other. I wasn’t sure what it was, but there was just something about him I couldn’t shake off. Was it his eyes? His aura?
“Is there anything you want in exchange for that piece of land?”
I didn’t want any amount for the land. The land was dear to me, and I wasn’t going to sell it, not for a blank cheque. I looked closely at Mr Steve, his eyes were on me like an eagle waiting to pick its prey.
“I… I am not willing to sell,” I stopped short as an idea came to my head.
“One thing, though. I will only give up the land if you marry me.”
The room fell silent instantly. His assistant looked at him, both eyebrows shot up as he adjusted his glasses. Steve Greyson, on the other hand, remained calm, almost like he hadn’t heard me right.
The Wayne had always hated the Grey empire. This was the perfect revenge and comeback. “Elaine Smith marries Billionaire Fashion CEO Steve Greyson, finally moving on from her failed marriage.” She could picture every blog carrying that headline.
“I have what you need, Mr Steve. You have what I want. Deal?” I didn’t know where I had gotten the idea from. It had just popped into my head.
“I will have my lawyers draft up a contract. It will only last for twelve months.” He said calmly.
“So you are agreeing to it? Nice.” I tried to hide the anxiety in my voice. Did I really just propose a marriage contract with Steve Greyson?”
“There will be some rules to it. It has to play as real, the board, and the press cannot find out that I got into a marriage contract. It will ruin our reputation.” He added.
“Behind public eyes, there will be no romance. No Sex. No entanglement. This will be purely business. You will help me establish myself in the business world.” I wasn’t about to give my heart out to anyone anymore, I needed to focus on taking over as CEO of my dad’s company.
“We have a deal. My lawyers will send the documents to you.” He stood up, his build hovering over mine, he extended his hand, and I couldn’t help but notice how firm and masculine he was.
We shook hands, and he left. I sat back, wondering what I had just started, but there was no time to retract my offer. He was the perfect revenge tool.
The time was ticking, my revenge plan had started rolling, and there was no going back.
Elaine’s POV“I have nothing to apologize for, neither will I leave the company or divorce Steve!”Mrs Greyson lifted her hands to slap me, but Steve caught her hands mid air and flung it to her side. “How dare you try to hit my wife?” His brows furrowed deeply, his breath heavy and short as his eyes shot up.“You keep defending this woman,” Mr Greyson finally spoke up but Steve caught him short.“This woman right here is my wife! And you will all respect her.”Mrs Greyson laughed sarcastically as she moved her body, she turned away from us, looking back at the reporters. “For this reason, we have decided to live together in this house, as one big family.” She said, smiling. There was no way I was going to live with them, Lucas included. Steve stepped up and shook his head. “Nothing of such will happen!”Ever since his Grandma took him in fully, he had never lived with his father, step mother and Lucas. I could see the veins popping in his neck as he protested.“This is the best solut
Elaine’s POV“You did nothing wrong. She had it coming.” Steve said as we walked down to Elizabeth’s room.“How dare you show your face here!” Gary lunged forward, but Steve blocked him by pulling me behind him.“She had it coming, and if you don’t fix yourself, I will have to sue her for harassment.”Gary laughed; his veins were popping out in his neck. “You have harmed the Wayne heir. She lost the baby.”I shook as I listened. I hadn’t done anything wrong, but it wasn’t pleasant news either. I stepped forward, my eyes boring into Gary’s.“I have had enough of you and Elizabeth, trying your hardest to take me down with cheap little antics,” I stepped in front of Gary, poking at his chest with my finger. “She suddenly came into the picture, ruined our marriage.”I paused and stepped back from him. Gary’s lips parted, but he said nothing. “She pushed me down the stairs, and I lost my baby!”“You said absolutely nothing all that time, you pampered her, you encouraged her antics. You sly
Elizabeth’s POV“I hate her!” I flung my bag on the couch in the living room, as I stomped my feet around.Everything has ended in chaos; this wasn’t what I had planned. How could everything have gone so wrong? The judges had retracted their decision, claiming it was a mistake, and announced Elaine the winner. All of my efforts have gone down the drain; no matter what I do, nothing works. I picked up my phone to check what the media was saying.“Greyson Corp announced as the winner of the Fashion Runway after a huge mistake?”I knew I had to plan something else; I needed to get rid of Elaine finally. Just then, the door flung open, and Gary stormed in. I bit my lower lip and held my breath in anticipation of his outburst.“You incompetent human!”I took several steps back as he got closer to me, lunging forward as he raised his hand. He stopped midway as though realizing something. “You are lucky, you carry the Wayne heir. I would have really dealt with you.”This was not the same man
Elaine’s POV“Stop them from beginning the runway, Steve.”Steve rushed to the backstage area, and I lifted my dress and followed suit. The announcer refused to delay anymore.“As the model from Greyson Corp isn’t here, the judges can proceed…”“I’m here!”I fixed my dress and walked to the stage. The judges nodded their heads as they exchanged whispers. In the audience, I could see Elizabeth; her glare could cut through one’s skin, and a silent protest escaped her lips.“This is lovely!” One of the judges said. The runway show ended well, Steve and I sat down while we waited for the judges to conclude on the winner.“You need to loosen up; your design was the best.” Steve flashed a smile as he rubbed my knees.“Can everybody come back on stage? We are about to announce the winner.” The announcer said.I knew for a fact that the judges loved my designs; they had all nodded in approval, and all I needed to hear was my name being called. I walked gently to the stage.“You really must th
Elaine’s POVThe beeping of the monitors brought me up from the bed, my eyes shot up as I brought my hand to my stomach. Steve was lying next to my bedside, his eyes were droopy, and his hair disheveled.“Elaine, thank God you are awake.” He brushed his hand against my face, and a small, tired smile crept from the corners of his lips.“You are here?” I replied weakly. The smell of anesthetics shot a bitter taste to the back of my tongue. I sat up gently as my blurred vision finally cleared. “Is the baby okay?”I held my breath as I prayed silently. I couldn’t afford to lose another pregnancy.“Everything is okay, Elaine.” He stroked my hair gently as he smiled. He had lost a considerable amount of weight since I had left a few days ago; worry and concern had worn his face down. I instantly remembered Laura saying he felt sorry, and I should give him a chance.“Is the baby fine, Steve?” My voice was low, but it was loud enough for him to hear the fear and anxiety in it.“The doctor sai
Elaine’s POV“Turn on the news, Elaine!” Laura screamed as she burst into the living room.I grabbed the TV remote and turned it on. “Mr Greyson has disclaimed all allegations about his wife, Mrs Elaine Greyson, who was earlier in the week accused of having an affair and bearing a bastard child.” The newscaster read.“In claims by the board of directors of Greyson Corp, of Mrs Greyson’s child not his, Mr Greyson has promised to resign from the position of CEO if it turns out otherwise.”“Isn’t that great!” Laura hugged me.There was no excitement in me; I had been humiliated, disrespected, and thrown out. Just because he stood before a few people to disclaim the allegations doesn’t make it all right. My grip on the remote tightened as I recollected the events of that day. Steve had asked me to leave without batting an eye; he had looked at me with scorn.I turned the TV off and flung the remote on the couch. “I don’t care about anything he said.”“Calm down, Elaine. It’s not good for
