Elaine’s POV

“You lost the baby,” the doctor's words replaying in my head as I watched my dad wail.

“He doesn’t deserve you. I want you to leave him.” He yelled as tears streamed down his face.

My dad had always been my biggest supporter. From when I decided to study Fashion design instead of business management. When I had accepted Gary’s proposal at just twenty-two.

Soon, Laura came into the room. I could tell she had been crying too, as her mascara was smeared. She asked my dad to return home, saying she would be by my side.

The door opened, and Gary walked in holding a bouquet.

“You monster! What are you doing here?” Laura spat at him as she blocked him from moving any further.

“I am here to see how Elaine is doing.” His voice was cool, apologetic. I would have fallen for how sorry he felt and forgiven me, but I was no longer the Elaine he knew.

“How could you… now she lost the…”

“Laura, don’t,” I stopped her.

He didn’t deserve to know anything. He didn’t deserve to feel sorry for the pain he had caused me. I looked at him, and I could feel my blood boiling with rage.

“Get out,” I screamed as I got out of bed, barely standing straight. I still felt sore all over my body, but that didn’t compare to the ache in my heart.

I moved slowly towards him and pulled at his shirt. “You disgust me. Go to your mistress, I never want to see you again.” I yelled with bloodshot eyes as I pushed him out into the hallway, slamming the door behind me.

“Laura, I want to divorce him. I’m done.” I didn’t know I was ever capable of saying such. I had never thought divorcing Gray was ever an option for me.

“I knew you would be needing it. I had drafted this out a few days ago. Here.” She brought out a brown envelope from her bag.

I stood in my bedroom, the bedroom Gary and I had shared for four years. The place that had held our secrets and dreams. I pushed open my wardrobe and began packing.

Laura had insisted I stay behind in the hospital, but I wanted to be completely done with Gary and Elizabeth. I begged her to drive me to the house and wait in the car while I packed my belongings.

I dragged a suitcase behind me as I walked down the stairs. I looked back but felt nothing but emptiness as I watched the empty house.

“What do you think you are doing, Elaine?” I hadn’t noticed Gary and Elizabeth walk into the house.

Elizabeth clung to his arms, acting like she would lose her balance if she let go. They dared to be in her house while she bore the weight of losing her child alone.

“Are you leaving Elizabeth?” she spoke calmly, pouting her lips and acting concerned.

“You both ruined my life. I did everything for you, Gary, but I was only just a replacement.” There was no sadness in my voice, only anger.

I had wasted several years of my life loving a man whose heart belonged to someone else.

“Don’t say that, Elaine. I didn’t mean for things to come to this.” He pleaded.

“Yes, Elaine. Things just happened, we didn’t mean for this to happen.” Elizabeth slowly caressed her tummy as she tugged a smile at me.

She was pregnant, and Gary was the father.

Whack!

Whack!

The slap took them both by surprise. The first landed on Gary, then on Elizabeth. “You both disgust me. You never deserved me.”

“Take it out on me, Elaine, but leave Elizabeth out of this. She is innocent.”

He was still defending her in my presence. He wrapped his arms around her as she held her cheek, which was bright red now.

“Say anything, Elaine, I will do anything to ease your pain.” He begged.

I pulled out the divorce papers from my bag. I had planned on leaving it behind for him to find, but this works better in my favour.

“Sign it.”

He grabbed the papers from my hand, looking at me in shock as he saw what they were.

“Gary, I’m so sorry for causing this. I never meant for this to happen.” Elizabeth said, tears streaming down her cheeks. She sure knows how to manipulate Gary.

“Do you really want this? What about our families?” he asked.

“Sign it, Gary. I never want to see you both after this. You are going to be a father soon; you should be glad.” I said as I noticed his hesitation.

“Baby…” Elizabeth tucked at his sleeves. “I don’t want your marriage to end because of me, but I don’t want little Poco to grow up without a complete home.”

They already had a nickname for the baby. I couldn’t help but wonder how long Gary had been deceiving me. All of the days he spent away claiming she needed help, did he already know?

Gary took out his pen and scribbled on the last page. I grabbed the papers from him and pushed through both of them as I walked out.

By the time I got to the car, the tears had begun flowing freely. As much as I wanted to hold it back, I couldn’t help but think of all the years I spent wasting on Gary.

We went straight to the courthouse to finalize the divorce. In a few hours, it was done. I stood outside the courthouse, inhaling the fresh air of being single.

“You are finally a free woman,” Laura said, smiling.

Just then, my phone beeped, and I looked at the message. It was from my dad. “Come straight home. Mr Steve Greyson, the CEO of Grey Empire, seeks to speak to you.”

Steve Greyson?  The same man who had made the headlines several times for bringing a trend in the fashion world.

Why would the most feared and ruthless billionaire in New York City be at my house, seeking to speak to me?

Steve’s POVThe rising noise and chaos around took my attention from the business call I was on. “Let’s reschedule. My Assistant will get back to you.” I hung up the phone and looked out the window. The sun had set, casting a golden yellow streak on the window. I dialed the office, but no one answered.“What is going on here?” A young woman lay sprawled on the floor, staff members surrounding her. I took a few steps forward before I sighted Elaine in the middle of it all.She had already gotten a strike from the board of directors; it wasn’t the time for any more drama and chaos. Elaine instantly turned to me, her eyes sunken in as she blinked.“I didn’t do anything.”I recognized the woman to be Elizabeth. The one who had caused an uproar in the media, she had instigated to the public that Elaine was barren.“I would have thought a man of your status would settle for someone more in your league.” She brought herself up and moved to me, “You need to discard her, she wants to hurt my b

Elaine’s POVI paced the hallway as I waited for the doctor to come out. Elizabeth had been wheeled in a few minutes ago, and the doctors and nurses were all attending to her.Steve had stepped out to attend to a business call, and my mind raced with different thoughts. I had gotten married to Steve to take revenge on them both, but I had gotten carried away with the board members, his family, and Vivienne.“You witch.” I turned back to see Mrs Wayne. Gary was standing next to her, breathing frantically as they hurried their pace.“I didn’t do anything…” Before I could plead my case, Mrs Wayne pulled my hair, yanking my head back. I held her hands, trying to force her to let go.“You want to ruin our family. Wasn’t it enough that you couldn’t give our family an heir?” She tightened her grip, and I yelled, calling out to Gary, who just stood watching.Of course, he had always been a mummy’s boy; what did I expect? I finally pushed her off me, shoving her hard on the chair nearby.Gary

Elaine’s POVI had my hands on my head, holding it tight as I paced Steve’s office. “If only everyone would let me be.”“You will do just fine. Your workstation has been arranged.” Steve said.He made no efforts to calm me down; he had opened up his laptop and began working already. “Grant will show you to your work station.” I picked up my bag and left. The whole staff exchanged glances and hushed whispers the minute I walked in. Two girls quietly walked up to, standing arms locked together.“We heard you are the boss’s wife.” The taller one said, hissing afterwards.“Don’t expect any sort of preferential treatment just because you have a relationship with the boss,” the other one added. They both turned sharply, swinging their hair in my face as they walked away.“They love to mark their territory, members pay them no heed.” I turned to see the other staff sitting next to me.“I’m Clara,” she flashed her teeth, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose.“Call me Elaine.”The da

Steve’s POVI picked up my phone for the hundredth time this morning, and I glanced out the window, holding my phone tightly as I reminisced on the event of the previous night.Elaine had caught me off guard with how calm and resolved she was at the event.“Stop tapping your fingers on the table, you look nervous,” I said to her.The earlier barrage of questions from the reporters had shaken her up. This event was very important to Greyson Corp, and it was the first time we were making a public appearance as a couple after signing the marriage contract.“I… I can’t help it. I can feel everyone’s gaze on me. I think it was a bad idea having me here.” She said as she took a sip of the wine.Despite her anxiety, she sat straight on the chair, the way she lifted the wine glass, her grip on it precise and cautious.“You are handling yourself just well. This will be over soon.”I said that too early, as less than five minutes later, my family showed up. Lucas, my stepbrother, who had compet

Elaine’s POVIn a few minutes, Steve had arrived at my house. Unlike his normal way of appearing in a suit, he looked very casual. My dad, upon hearing that Steve was around, rushed out and invited him into his study for a “Small talk.”“How do you plan on taking care of my daughter?” I pressed my ear to the door as I held my breath.I could hear my heart pounding heavily as I listened in; my ears were pressed tightly against the door, picking up bits and pieces of the conversation.I was sure my dad would hound Steve, considering all that had happened, but to my surprise, their small talk ended after fifteen minutes.“We need to leave now so we don’t get held up in the traffic.”I kissed my dad goodbye and left with Steve. After navigating his way for a couple of minutes, we finally pulled up in front of the hospital.“Why are we here?” I blurted out.The sight of the hospital building made my heart race, my palms sweat, and my lips quiver. How was this woman claiming to be his fiancée?“Vivienne, what are you doing here?” Steve barked.“Did you cancel our marriage arrangement, so you could settle for… less?” Vivienne stood up to face Steve, wrapping her hands around his arm.Steve brushed it off, pushing her off lightly. He took a step back as he turned to me.“Is she really your fiancée? I mean… how could we…”“She is my ex-fiancée. I called off our engagement a year ago.” He moved closer to me, eyes bearing into mine. “You swore to never get married, how could you two have gotten married? I have known Steve for twenty years now, and you don’t seem to be his type of woman.” Vivienne wal
