Mag-log inBriony's POV
I lay frozen, staring at the window, listening to that scrape work its way slower and more careful than any wind or branch could manage. My heart was going so hard I could feel it in my ears. The latch gave with a soft click. The window slid open an inch, then wider, cold air pouring in around a shape pulling itself over the sill, black-clothed, face covered, moving with the kind of quiet that only comes from practice. I didn't think. I didn't have time to think. My body just reacted, rolling off the far side of the bed as his boots hit the floor. "Where is she…" His voice cut off the second he spotted me crouched against the wall. He lunged. I threw my hands up, not to fight, just to stop him, some desperate animal instinct screaming got back away from me and the mark on my palm exploded to life so fast it lit the whole room gold. It wasn't gentle. It wasn't the warm pull I felt healing Faro. This was raw, ugly force, a wall of pressure slamming into him mid-lunge and throwing him backward like he'd run full-speed into something solid. He hit the window frame hard enough to crack the wood, folded halfway through it, and scrambled the rest of the way out with a strangled grunt before I even got my feet back under me. "Kieran!" My voice tore out of me raw. "KIERAN!" By the time I made it to the window, he was already dropping over the outer wall, quick as anything, disappearing into the dark tree line beyond it before I could get more than a shape and a direction. Boots pounded down the hall a second later, the guard posted outside, coming around the corner too late, and behind him Kieran, half-dressed, already shifting the closer he got. "He's gone," I said, breathless, pointing toward the wall. "Went over the top, right there.." Kieran didn't wait for the rest. He was out the window before I finished the sentence, four other wolves close behind, all of them tearing across the yard toward the wall in a blur of motion and low growls. I stood there shaking, both hands pressed flat against my chest like I could hold my heart still by force, staring at the broken window frame and the cold night pouring through it. "Where's the guard who was supposed to be watching this window?" Kieran's voice, sharp, cutting through the noise once he came back a few minutes later, empty-handed, breathing hard. "Found him behind the woodpile," someone called back. "Alive. Knocked cold. Whoever it was must've taken him out first, before going for the window." Kieran's face went tight in a way I hadn't seen since the night of the binding stone. He climbed back through the broken frame instead of using the door, straight to me, hands checking me over before either of us said a word, my arms, my shoulders, my face, like he needed to confirm with his own eyes that I was actually whole. "I'm fine," I said, before he could ask. "You're shaking." "I'm allowed to shake. Somebody just climbed through my window." That got a short, humorless breath out of him, almost a laugh, nowhere close to one. "Fair enough." His hands settled on my shoulders, steady, grounding. "What happened? Exactly what you remember, all of it." "I woke up to the lock being worked. Waited, thought maybe it was nothing, then he came through and lunged straight at me." My voice cracked on the last part. "I didn't even decide to do anything. It just happened. Threw him halfway through the window before I even understood what I was doing." "That's not healing," Kieran said, half to himself, eyes dropping to my palm where the gold light was already fading back down to nothing. "No." I flexed my fingers, still buzzing faintly, like static clinging to my skin. "That was something else." "We'll figure out what later." His hands tightened on my shoulders. "Right now I want to know who sent him." We didn't have to wait long for an answer, or at least the start of one. Sage came through the broken window a few minutes later, breathing hard from running the wall line, something small clutched tight in her fist. "Found this by the base of the wall," she said, holding it out. "Right where he must've dropped it climbing over." Kieran took it from her palm and turned it toward the lamp light. It was small, dark iron, no bigger than a coin, stamped with a crest none of us had ever seen worn openly inside Ashvale, a jagged shape, half wolf, half thorn, worked into the metal with craftsmanship. "That's not Ashvale made," Sage said. "Not anything from the market either. I've seen every trade mark that passes through here and it's not one of them." "It's Blackfen." Kieran's voice had gone very quiet, very still. He turned the token over once more, jaw locked tight. "Their sigil. I've seen it on captured gear before, years back." The room went silent around us. Rowan, who came in somewhere at the last minute without me noticing, let out a low breath. "So it wasn't Petra passing gossip to some random trader." "No." Kieran closed his fist around the token, knuckles white. "It was Blackfen, sending somebody straight into my pack, straight to her window, to take her by force." He looked up, eyes finding mine across the room, something dark and furious burning behind them that had nothing to do with me this time. "This isn't a rumor problem anymore.”Briony's POVKieran came back near midnight, boots caked in mud from the border trail, jaw tight enough that I knew before he said a word that whatever he found out there hadn't settled anything."Well?" I stood up from the chair I'd been waiting in, too keyed up to have actually slept."Multiple sets of tracks. Days' worth, maybe longer." He dropped into the chair across from me, rubbing a hand over his face. "Whoever came through that window last night wasn't the first one scouting that stretch of wall. They've been watching us for a while.""And Halric? What did he say before you got pulled away?"Something shifted in his expression, careful now. "He wrote the treaty clause himself. Forty years back. Pushed the council to leave it open to any Thistlewood daughter instead of naming one specifically."My stomach dropped. "He knew. About the bloodline.""Suspected. That's the word he used." Kieran leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "Said he'd been watching your family for decades, w
Kieran's POVHalric led me to his own quarters instead of the war room, which told me something before he even opened his mouth. He shut the door behind us and checked the hallway twice through the gap before he trusted it closed."You're making me nervous," I said."Good." He didn't sit. Paced instead, hands clasped behind his back, an old habit I have seen him do maybe three times in my life, all of them before delivering news he didn't want to deliver. "Because what I'm about to tell you should've come out a long time ago, and I've spent years telling myself it didn't matter. Last night proved me wrong.""Then tell me."He stopped pacing and looked at me straight on. "The treaty clause. The one demanding a Thistlewood daughter for the binding. I wrote that wording myself, forty years back, when I sat on the council that first drafted it."That stopped me cold. "You never mentioned that.""Because it wasn't something I was proud of admitting." His jaw worked. "The clause wasn't pack
Briony's POVBy morning I had four guards instead of one, stationed at my door, my window, and both ends of the hallway, and I hated every single one of them on principle even though none of it was their fault."This is ridiculous," I said, watching a fifth wolf get added to the rotation outside the healing house. "I can't walk to the well without an escort now.""You can't walk anywhere without an escort now." Kieran didn't look up from the notes he was reading, spread out across the war room table like they might rearrange themselves into an answer if he stared long enough. "Not after last night.""I threw a fully grown man through a window with my bare hands. I think I can handle a walk to the well.""You barely stayed on your feet doing it." He finally looked up. "You told me yourself. It didn't feel like healing. You don't know what it costs you yet, and neither do I, and I'm not betting your life on a power neither of us understands against wolves who came here specifically to t

Briony's POV"Whose scent is it?" I asked, my voice lower than I meant it to come out.Kieran straightened, still staring at the doorframe like it might give him more if he looked hard enough. "Not fresh. A few hours old, maybe more. Faint enough that if I hadn't been standing right here I would've missed it completely.""But you know whose it is."His jaw ticked. "I have a guess.""Petra.""I said a guess." He said it fast, like he wanted to hold off naming her out loud until he was sure, but I could see it in his face, he already knew. "Get inside. Bolt the door. I'll send someone to sit outside your window tonight.""I don't need a babysitter.""You need somebody who isn't asleep when the next note gets passed." He didn't wait for me to argue further, already moving down the hall, the tracker jogging to keep pace with him.I went inside like he told me to. I bolted the door like he told me to. I did not, however, plan on staying quiet about any of it, and the second I heard his boo
Briony's POVI found Kieran in the war room going over patrol maps with two of his trackers, and I didn't wait for an invitation to interrupt."Petra passed a note to a man at the border market. He didn't smell like Ashvale. Didn't smell like anybody I've smelled before, actually."The trackers went still. Kieran's head came up slowly."Describe him.""Tall. Dark coat, no colors on him. Kept his face turned away from the crowd most of the time." I crossed my arms. "He took the note and disappeared before I could get a good look.""And Petra?""Told me I was imagining things. Then told me to be careful who I said that to."Kieran's jaw worked once. He turned to the older tracker, rattled off three names and a stretch of border to cover before nightfall, and the two men were gone within a minute, boots already moving down the hall."You should've come straight to me instead of confronting her," he said, once they were gone."I didn't confront her. She confronted me.""Same difference, i
