Briony's POV

The wolf on my table was dying, and Petra wouldn't stop talking.

"Bind it tighter." I pressed both hands against Torin's side, blood slicking hot between my fingers, soaking straight through the cloth. He came through the door twenty minutes ago on Rowan's back, one arm shredded to nothing and a bite in his side deep enough that I could see the white of a rib underneath.

"You're doing it wrong." Petra leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching like this was entertainment and not a man's life stretched out in front of her. "Should've sent for Old Bettina."

"Old Bettina's asleep in the east house, and he doesn't have twenty minutes for somebody to go wake her up." I didn't look up. My hands were shaking, but they hadn't stopped moving, and right now that was the only part that mattered.

Torin groaned, a low broken sound, and his hand shot out and grabbed my wrist hard enough to leave a mark. "It's okay," I told him, even though it wasn't.

"You're going to be fine. Just hold still for me, all right?"

"Ahh fuck" His back came up off the table when I pressed the poultice into the wound, and I felt that sound land somewhere behind my ribs.

"I know. I know it hurts. Almost done." I kept my voice even because panicking wasn't going to close anything faster, and because somebody in that room needed to sound like they had a handle on this, even if it was a lie I was telling both of us.

Petra clicked her tongue like she had somewhere better to be. "Guess it's good the pack's finally getting a real healer's blood in the family. Shame it's not the sister actually doing the healing right now."

I didn't answer that. I learned a long time ago that answering just gave people more to chew on.

"Bet the Alpha's thrilled," she went on, "getting the sharp one instead of…" she waved a hand at me, up and down, like she was deciding whether I was worth the breath. "Well. You know."

"Petra." Sage's voice cut across the room from the doorway, flat enough that Petra actually flinched. "Get out, or make yourself useful and hold his leg so she's not fighting him and stitching him at the same time."

Petra's mouth twisted. "I don't take orders from an enforcer who isn't even ranked yet."

"Then take it from the healer with her hands inside your packmate right now, and get out of her light." Sage crossed the room in four strides and put her whole weight down on Torin's leg without waiting to be asked twice.

Petra left. She didn't slam the door, which somehow felt weird, like she wanted us to know she wasn't bothered enough to bother.

"You good?" Sage asked, once the door clicked shut.

"I'm not the one bleeding out on the table."

"That's not what I asked, stop drifting.”

I didn't have an answer for that one, so I threaded the needle instead. Torin made another one of those broken sounds when it went in, and I whispered sorry, almost there, the way I did for every wolf who ended up hating me a little for how much it hurt to be put back together.

It took another ten minutes to finish closing him up. By the time I tied off the last stitch, my hands had stopped shaking, and Torin's breathing had gone from ragged to something closer to sleep.

"He's going to make it," I said, mostly to convince myself.

"You didn't need me to tell you that." Sage wiped her hands on a rag and looked at me the way she always did after I patched somebody up, checking how much of myself I used up doing it. "You look like hell, by the way."

"Thank you. Very kind of you to say."

"I mean it. When's the last time you actually slept?"

"I'll sleep after the wedding." It came out flatter than I meant it to.

Sage's face did something complicated. "How are you doing with all that? The real answer, not the one you hand everybody else."

"I'm fine. It's not my wedding." I scrubbed Torin's blood off my hands and watched it turn the water in the basin pink. "Marisol's the one marrying a man who scares half this pack just by walking into a room. I hand her the ring and try not to trip over my own dress. That's the whole job."

"You say that like it doesn't get to you." Sage tilted her head. "Petra's not the only one talking, you know. I hear what they call you too. The spare. The…"

"Don't." I kept it quiet, but it landed how I needed it to. "I know what they call me, Sage. I don't need it repeated back to me."

She put her hands up, backed off an inch. "Fair enough."

For a second the room was just the two of us, Torin's steady breathing, and the smell of blood and crushed herbs going stale in the air. It was almost peaceful. I'd take it almost peacefully. Nobody was offering me much else these days.

Then the door slammed open hard enough to hit the wall, and one of the pack elders, Halric, gray-bearded, breathing like he ran the whole way from the main house filled the doorway with a look on his face that dropped my stomach before he said a single word.

"Where's Marisol?"

Sage straightened fast. "What do you mean, where's Marisol? She's at the main house getting fitted.."

"She's not." His voice cracked down the middle. "Nobody's seen her since this morning. Her room's empty. Window's wide open, sheets tied off the sill like she climbed straight out of it." His eyes cut to me, and something in them turned my skin cold.

"Ceremony's in two days, girl. Tell me you know where your sister ran off to."

I didn't. I had no idea where she was.

And from the way Halric's face had gone the color of old ash, I was starting to understand that not knowing was about to become my problem too.

Briony's POVKieran came back near midnight, boots caked in mud from the border trail, jaw tight enough that I knew before he said a word that whatever he found out there hadn't settled anything."Well?" I stood up from the chair I'd been waiting in, too keyed up to have actually slept."Multiple sets of tracks. Days' worth, maybe longer." He dropped into the chair across from me, rubbing a hand over his face. "Whoever came through that window last night wasn't the first one scouting that stretch of wall. They've been watching us for a while.""And Halric? What did he say before you got pulled away?"Something shifted in his expression, careful now. "He wrote the treaty clause himself. Forty years back. Pushed the council to leave it open to any Thistlewood daughter instead of naming one specifically."My stomach dropped. "He knew. About the bloodline.""Suspected. That's the word he used." Kieran leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "Said he'd been watching your family for decades, w

Kieran's POVHalric led me to his own quarters instead of the war room, which told me something before he even opened his mouth. He shut the door behind us and checked the hallway twice through the gap before he trusted it closed."You're making me nervous," I said."Good." He didn't sit. Paced instead, hands clasped behind his back, an old habit I have seen him do maybe three times in my life, all of them before delivering news he didn't want to deliver. "Because what I'm about to tell you should've come out a long time ago, and I've spent years telling myself it didn't matter. Last night proved me wrong.""Then tell me."He stopped pacing and looked at me straight on. "The treaty clause. The one demanding a Thistlewood daughter for the binding. I wrote that wording myself, forty years back, when I sat on the council that first drafted it."That stopped me cold. "You never mentioned that.""Because it wasn't something I was proud of admitting." His jaw worked. "The clause wasn't pack

Briony's POVBy morning I had four guards instead of one, stationed at my door, my window, and both ends of the hallway, and I hated every single one of them on principle even though none of it was their fault."This is ridiculous," I said, watching a fifth wolf get added to the rotation outside the healing house. "I can't walk to the well without an escort now.""You can't walk anywhere without an escort now." Kieran didn't look up from the notes he was reading, spread out across the war room table like they might rearrange themselves into an answer if he stared long enough. "Not after last night.""I threw a fully grown man through a window with my bare hands. I think I can handle a walk to the well.""You barely stayed on your feet doing it." He finally looked up. "You told me yourself. It didn't feel like healing. You don't know what it costs you yet, and neither do I, and I'm not betting your life on a power neither of us understands against wolves who came here specifically to t

  • Married Off as a Breeder, She Became His Only Mate.    Chapter 12

Briony's POVI lay frozen, staring at the window, listening to that scrape work its way slower and more careful than any wind or branch could manage. My heart was going so hard I could feel it in my ears. The latch gave with a soft click. The window slid open an inch, then wider, cold air pouring in around a shape pulling itself over the sill, black-clothed, face covered, moving with the kind of quiet that only comes from practice. I didn't think. I didn't have time to think. My body just reacted, rolling off the far side of the bed as his boots hit the floor."Where is she…" His voice cut off the second he spotted me crouched against the wall.He lunged.I threw my hands up, not to fight, just to stop him, some desperate animal instinct screaming got back away from me and the mark on my palm exploded to life so fast it lit the whole room gold. It wasn't gentle. It wasn't the warm pull I felt healing Faro. This was raw, ugly force, a wall of pressure slamming into him mid-lunge and th

Briony's POV"Whose scent is it?" I asked, my voice lower than I meant it to come out.Kieran straightened, still staring at the doorframe like it might give him more if he looked hard enough. "Not fresh. A few hours old, maybe more. Faint enough that if I hadn't been standing right here I would've missed it completely.""But you know whose it is."His jaw ticked. "I have a guess.""Petra.""I said a guess." He said it fast, like he wanted to hold off naming her out loud until he was sure, but I could see it in his face, he already knew. "Get inside. Bolt the door. I'll send someone to sit outside your window tonight.""I don't need a babysitter.""You need somebody who isn't asleep when the next note gets passed." He didn't wait for me to argue further, already moving down the hall, the tracker jogging to keep pace with him.I went inside like he told me to. I bolted the door like he told me to. I did not, however, plan on staying quiet about any of it, and the second I heard his boo

  • Married Off as a Breeder, She Became His Only Mate.     Chapter 10

Briony's POVI found Kieran in the war room going over patrol maps with two of his trackers, and I didn't wait for an invitation to interrupt."Petra passed a note to a man at the border market. He didn't smell like Ashvale. Didn't smell like anybody I've smelled before, actually."The trackers went still. Kieran's head came up slowly."Describe him.""Tall. Dark coat, no colors on him. Kept his face turned away from the crowd most of the time." I crossed my arms. "He took the note and disappeared before I could get a good look.""And Petra?""Told me I was imagining things. Then told me to be careful who I said that to."Kieran's jaw worked once. He turned to the older tracker, rattled off three names and a stretch of border to cover before nightfall, and the two men were gone within a minute, boots already moving down the hall."You should've come straight to me instead of confronting her," he said, once they were gone."I didn't confront her. She confronted me.""Same difference, i
