Chapter 1

Angela's POV

News of the appointment for the abortion reached my husband, Jared Dickson, that very evening. Within the next half hour, the sound of his heavy, hurried footsteps approached me.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, Angela Baxter? Did you think that you could just decide to abort the baby on a whim?" he yelled in my face, tossing the appointment slip onto the coffee table, his eyes as dark as thunder.

"I'm not doing anything," I replied calmly. "I just didn't want this baby anymore."

Jared looked puzzled at first. Then, he caught sight of the round-the-world travel itinerary on the table and laughed knowingly and derisively.

"So, this is why you're throwing a tantrum?"

For the first time ever, he actually offered an explanation to me.

"Lena has been working diligently by my side for two years, and I was just simply rewarding her and her family. She deserved it."

My eyes remained fixed on the figure of 780,000 dollars. All I wanted was an ergonomic chair that cost less than 100 dollars, but he rejected it at once.

"So, you think that I don't deserve an ergonomic chair?"

"Angela," Jared said dangerously, furrowing his brows at me. "Don't be unreasonable."

He slid the abortion appointment slip back over to me, his tone brooking no argument. "Cancel the appointment now."

When I didn't move, he glared at me for a moment before taking out the prenuptial agreement from the side drawer.

"If you really want to go through with the abortion, at least do that math beforehand. You won't be able to afford it."

Clause 17 of the agreement stated that a penalty of six million dollars would be incurred if I went through with an unauthorized abortion.

It was always like this. Whenever there was a dispute among us, he would always pull out the agreement and hold it against me.

Even the frequency of our intimacy in bed had to be planned out in advance. If my requests exceeded five times a month, it would cost me a penalty of 200 dollars each time.

And now, even an abortion was being quantified in monetary terms. The Dickson family obviously thought nothing of me other than just a baby-making machine.

When Jared saw that I had fallen silent, he assumed that he'd managed to persuade me otherwise. He then softened his tone and said, "It's not that I refused to let you buy that chair. It's just that there are so many eyes watching every penny you spend.

"And I don't want my wife to be the subject of gossip for acting entitled just because I favor you."

I looked at him. "It's just a damn chair."

Impatience flickered in his eyes.

"You've been acting as if the whole world should revolve around your belly and cater to your every whim just because you got pregnant.

"I'm only teaching you a lesson by refusing to buy it for you. If not, you'll be the laughingstock of the family."

He was afraid that people would point fingers at him for doting on his wife too much. Yet, everyone knew that he was much, much more "generous" with his personal secretary, Selena Beech.

He would often give her necklaces costing well over 30,000 dollars, evening gowns priced at more than 60,000 dollars per piece, and more. He'd buy them all for her without a second thought. Every single expense he made for her became the talk of both the company and our household.

Meanwhile, when my grandfather, Larry Baxter, needed money for medical treatment for his back, he had to follow strict protocol and apply for the financial aid at the company in person. He wasn't allowed to skip a single step of the six-stage approval process.

And ultimately, the final verdict was a rejection. He was simply told to stay home and recuperate.

A wave of helplessness washed over me. I looked at Jared and said slowly, "I won't have to follow these rules if I weren't your wife anymore, right?

"Let's get a divorce, then."

"Angela!"Jared kept calling my name from the back, but I turned my back to him and walked away without another backward glance.…I did my best to avoid Jared in the time leading up to the court hearing. After all, he held a lot of power in Cornton, and I didn't want to be influenced by him in any way if I could help it.But to my great surprise, Selena was the one who came looking for me after that.As soon as I opened my door, she lunged at me like a madwoman."Angela Baxter! How dare you sue me!" she screamed hysterically. "Mr. Dickson's only just mad at me temporarily for now! He'll never ignore me in the end! You're the one who's done for!"As soon as the words were out of her mouth, I slapped her hard on the cheek. She held her cheek in shock, her jaw falling slack as she stared at me."You… How dare you hit me?"I looked at her extremely calmly and asked, "Why can't I hit you? "If it weren't for you purposely stirring up shit, Jared would never have forced Grandpa to

Angela's POVThe moment I got off the operating table, I dragged my frail body out of the hospital and left. The hospital was full of people whom Jared knew. He would be able to find me in an instant if I stayed, but I never wanted to see him again.I clutched the pocket watch, which was the only thing that Grandpa and Grandma had left me, feeling a knife stabbing into my heart. They had been my only family left in this world. But now, they were both gone. And it was all my fault for choosing to marry the man who would eventually kill them. After finding a safe place to stay, I contacted Pete to sue Jared and Selena."Mr. Ramos, I have the surveillance footage from that time to prove that Jared and Selena conspired to drive Grandpa to his death and scare Grandma to her death as well."Also, am I able to use this incident as grounds to file for divorce against Jared as well?"Pete replied, "Yes. If the evidence is solid, the court will most likely grant the divorce."…News of

Jared immediately felt as though he'd been struck by a thunderbolt."W-What did you just say?"He stumbled into the crematorium, but all he saw waiting for him were two urns on the table, with the names "Larry Baxter" and "Margaret Delaney" on them. Those were Angela's grandparents' names."How could this be…" Jared muttered. The crematorium staff sighed and said, "The old man died by suicide, and the old woman died from a sudden heart attack. They were rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival."Jared staggered backward in disbelief.Larry and Margaret were Angela's only living family left. And yet, he had forced them to their deaths over just a mere outfit.Jared's vision flashed. He immediately tried calling Angela, but all he heard was just the mechanical female voice on the other end of the line."The number you have called is not available. Please try again later—"It wasn't until then that Jared finally realized Angela was gone."Why…"Jared brought the

Third-Person POV Jared stood frozen at the doorway. The sprawling manor was eerily lifeless, draped everywhere with black decorations."What the hell is going on here? What's this, a funeral or something?" Jared roared.Frida hurried over and stammered, "Mr. Dickson, Mrs. Dickson's grandparents both passed away in the manor. According to the rules, this is how the place should be decorated…""What?" Jared asked, his voice rising sharply. "How could they just die out of the blue?"Frida explained everything honestly to him, and Jared frowned harder and harder as he heard the rest of the story."Impossible," he said. "How could the old man have killed himself over his clothes? He's not a kid. "Where is Angela? I will question her myself."Frida shook her head and didn't say a word. Jared lost his patience with her and headed straight up the stairs."Angela Baxter! Your damn family is getting increasingly out of hand!" he roared. "First, you made a whole fuss demanding a divor

I stopped dead in my tracks and turned around to stare at Jared in disbelief."You're making an elderly man take off his clothes?"The manor's maids and bodyguards gathered around, looking on as though they were enjoying a show.Jared's eyes darted away for a moment before he cleared his throat and said, "You were the one who asked for a divorce. And since we're divorcing, all assets must be accounted for, starting with this outfit that your grandfather is wearing."The outfit Grandpa was wearing was a gift from Jared for his 80th birthday. It had cost him 30,000 dollars. And when Grandpa heard the price of the outfit, he immediately stored it away in the wardrobe and refused to wear it.He had only put it on today for the rare occasion of coming to the Dickson manor to bring me home.Grandpa got a shock and hid behind me. Although he didn't understand the Dickson family's so-called rules and regulations, he knew what Jared was trying to imply. He asked timidly, "How about… How

I felt as though I'd been struck by lightning. After all, Grandpa and Grandma's field back home was the fruit of their lifelong and painstaking labor. The moment Jared came back, I rushed over at once and demanded, "Did you just seal off my grandparents' field?"Jared loosened his tie leisurely and leaned back against the couch, replying casually, "I'm just being fair to everyone."My parents have been subsidizing us with millions of dollars' worth of financial aid every year. By the same logic, your family ought to contribute something too."Once the field is leveled, we can build an outdoor children's playground there. It would be a good place for the baby to go to after she's born."He spoke airily and casually, as though the destruction of that land were nothing but a trivial matter. My voice trembled. "But that's my grandparents' whole life!"He retorted, "And what, my parents' money just grows on trees or something? Marriage requires equal input from both parties. As the b
