NERIAH'S POV

"Denver! Denver!?"

Eden taps her foot incessantly on the tiled floor. I honestly wish she'd stop. That movement is messing with my brain.

We'd rushed Denver to the nearest hospital as soon as he lost consciousness. He's been undergoing treatment for the past hour and still, nothing. He's not regaining consciousness.

"God what have I done, what have I done?" I grab my hair with my hands pulling until some strands give way. If anything happens to Denver, I'm as good as dead.

"None of this was your fault, it was my my fault. I should've known the king of America would come for you." Eden says quietly.

The silence is the room is interrupted by rapid clanking of boots against tiled floor. It's Gia, Ethan in tow.

The doctor told us we had only thirty minutes to see him so I called Gia and Ethan. I know they'd be extremely worried when they couldn't reach him.

Gia's purse drops from her hand with a loud thud when she sees him. She's about running to shake him back to cons

NERIAH'S POV I didn't expect Denver to come after me. "Neriah!" His shoes clang softly on the floor as his arms snake out to grab mine. I pull my arm away from his. "What do you want, Denver?" There's a burning rage in my chest and I can't wait to get it all out. "Take a look around you. Everyone's staring at me weirdly because of you and Gia. I wonder what the think of me right now." He angles his head to the left and right as if truly checking for who and who were watching us. "Stop creating scenes and causing chaos in my life. I don't need you, Denver." With that I turn around and make to walk away but his words stop me. "You don't need me?" He laughs harshly, "You don't need me and yet I'm the one who's been saving your ass every fucking time. You're either getting killed in an accident, assassinated, or getting kidnapped. I was the one who saved you in all those times." I whirl on him, fingers clenched into a

DENVER'S POV Why does everyone keep saying this?I down the cup of coffee in one gulp since it's the nearest liquid I can find. Fuck. "I'm not in love with her," I growl angrily. Sara tuts and props herself elegantly on a three legged stool. "Then why're you so angry? You care about her so much that it gets on your nerves. No?" Yes. And it was ruining my relationship with Gia. She wasn't perfect but she'd been with me through thick and thin for almost ten years. Gia's worth marrying if I ever considered it. However, Neriah on the other hand is a rare gem. Within one year or working in my company, the financial charts had spiked tremendously. Her department in the office were the most skilled and talented besides the security team and all of that's as a result of Neriah's input. She's freaking compassionate, she introduced me to a love only my mom had for her husband and son. It was so easy to be with her.

DENVER'S POVThe moment Neriah walks out that door, I turn on Gia. "What on earth is wrong with you?" "Me?" She scoffs, "Denver I should ask you that question, honey. What's going on?" I drag a rough hand through my hair, sighing exasperatedly. She's not wrong. I need to know what's going on. Why do I get so irrational when it comes to dealing with Neriah? Is it because I know that she's been marked for slaughter by the King of America, or because Gia's presence now suddenly irritates me. No logical explanation seems to be available for this. "Denver....""Nothing's going on, Gia. You're just too hard on Neriah and I think it's high time you gave her a break."Gia's mouth falls open in shock. "She's not the one you should be caring about, Denver. It's me. You should be worried about how I'll feel seeing that you got another woman lunch when I'm right in front of you. You should be worried about me strangling Neriah in her sleep because she now shares equal privileges with me..."

NERIAH'S POV Denver Chadwick's one hell of a character. The paper bags in my hands are starting to weigh down on my arms, my fingers clutch tightly on them, sweat dripping down the sides of my neck. Why the hell does he want me to get two lunch packs, and why did one have to be what a lady liked to have for lunch? He couldn't possibly want to eat with me, could he?Heat flushes up my neck at the thought. He's been acting all nice and protective lately. The scene with Myles at the office was completely inappropriate but I don't know why my lips curled up excitedly or why the urge to rise and throw my arms around his neck suddenly came over me. He's the sweetest, nicest man I've ever met but I'm sure he doesn't know it. Infact, he'd rather puke in public than believe it. The smile on my lips wipe off as I walk into the company. It seems like everyone is staring at me. Sometimes I think I'm starting to get used to it but every single time I walk through those sliding doors, my brava

DENVER'S POV The second Myles opens his mouth in front of her, I want to smash his teeth. He shouldn’t be here. He has no business hanging around my companylike some overeager schoolboy with flowers and coffee. Flowers. Christ. I take the bouquet off her desk before she can even smile at it, shoving it back into his hand like it’s garbage. He tries to mask the sting with a smirk, but I see the anger in his eyes. The way they narrow, the way his jaw clenches.Good. Let him be pissed.“This is a workplace, not some fancy diner,” I bite out, not caring that the whole damn office has gone quiet. Her colleagues are all pretending not to watch, but their eyes flicker. My voice drops to a lower but even sharper tone. “Neriah, my office. Now.”She startles, pushing her chair back like she’s stepping into fire. Myles watches her go, something smug curling in his expression like he thinks this is a game and he's just lost. I do

NERIAH'S POV Now that I’m alone with my thoughts, I see it all over again. Gia’s hand rising viciously in the air, and Denver stepping between us. His cast made him clumsy but his grip was firm as he caught her wrist mid-swing. His face was a mask of cold fury, and for a second, I couldn't believe it was me he was shieldingI shiver even now at the memory, my fingers drifting up to the necklace clasped around my throat. The metal is cool against my skin. I trace the pendant absently, letting out a sigh I don’t realize I’ve been holding. What is wrong with me? Why am I suddenly thinking dreamily about Denver of all people? He’s moody, sharp-tongued, and impossibly controlling. He's not the kind of man I'd look to fawn over on a normal day. “Focus,” I whisper to myself, straightening the stack of papers on my desk.I’m supposed to be drafting a proposal for the upcoming contract. Words blur across the page, bullet points refusing to arrange themselves into anything persuasive. My hea
