Ivy's Pov

“Looks like you have a new admirer.” My co worker Jenny, whispered to me.

I knew what she meant. I glanced at the far end of the restaurant.

A man sat alone at a table near the back. He’d been there for hours, absentmindedly stirring a bowl of soup that had long gone cold, while his eyes were fixed on me. I was use to men staring. A lot of them often complimented my looks, and some even mistook kindness for an invitation until I firmly reminded them to keep their hands to themselves.

But this man's stare wasn’t like usual stares. It was creepy and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

“He looks rich, why not go and say hi? It might lead to something.” Jenny continued.

I shook my head.

“No thanks. I have a boyfriend. I don’t plan to cheat on him.”

“Well, maybe you should. All these wealthy guys that come in every evening. I’m sure you’ld have gotten quite a few interested in you if you gave them the green light. Then you won’t have to struggle and stress so much about your grandma’s medical bills.”

“Not interested Jenny.” I said, irritated about being reminded of my grandmother’s medical bills. “I am working to cover the bill. I don’t need the help of any rich jerk.”

She rolled her eyes.

“ Being a goody-goody doesn’t pay the bills, Ivy. Sometimes you have to bend the rules if you want life to finally bend in your favor.”

“Well that’s not me. I have no intention of cheating on Joe. We love and trust each other.”

She shook her head as if I was a lost cause and moved away. I glanced at the man. He was still staring. I ignored him and finished cleaning the table. Business was slow tonight, I guessed because it had been raining all afternoon. Since there was nothing to do, I snuck off to the bathroom and called Joe.

“Hey babe, how is your shift?” He asked.

“Boring, and I’m worrying about you. How are you feeling?” I asked. He’d cancelled our dinner date earlier because he had an upset stomach.

“Worse. I think it’s all that pizza I had last night. But I’ve been to the pharmacy and gotten some medication that will help.”

“Poor you. Are you sure I shouldn’t come over and make you feel better?” I teased.

He laughed softly. “No sweetheart it’s okay. You don’t get off till midnight remember? It will be too late. I’m off to bed right now, I’ll see you tomorrow. Love you.”

“Love you too. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I hung up smiling. No matter how sad, bored, or tired I was, talking to Joe always cheered me up.

I went back to the restaurant. The creepy man was still there and resumed staring as I came in. I sat with my back to him, wondering how to kill boredom. I decided to call Chloe my best friend. I'd gone to see her that afternoon and she'd flashed a huge diamond ring in my face.

“He proposed!” She yelled in excitement.

I knew she meant her fiance. He lived in New York and I’d never met him, but Chloe talked about him all the time, and showed me all the expensive gifts he’d given her, including paying for her very comfortable apartment.

“Congratulations!” I exclaimed admiring the beautiful ring.

I was thrilled for her but running late for my shift, so I promised to call. Now I was keeping my promise, but she wasn’t picking up.

She was probably out having a solo celebration. I would get the details tomorrow. I glanced at the time. 9pm. Three hours before closing time and not much to do. I looked back to see Mr. Creepy was gone. He must have left while I was on the phone. Good riddance to creepy rubbish. I thought.

The manger came over.

“Guys, since there isn't much business tonight, you all can clean up and head home.”

We almost cheered. We hurriedly cleaned up and left the restaurant.

“Want to join us for a movie?” Jenny asked as I waited for a cab

“No. I’m going to see Joe. He isn’t feeling too good. I want to keep him company.”

“Ok lover girl. Good night.”

I rolled my eyes and took a cab to Joe’s apartment. I was happy to see his lights were still on. He was awake. I let myself in with my spare key. The plan was to sneak into his bedroom, undress and lie on his bed. I almost laughed thinking how surprised he’d be.

But as I entered the hallway he was coming out of his bedroom, stark naked.

“Ivy? He asked wide eyed, “what the hell are you doing here?”

“Surprise.” I laughed a little. “My shift ended early so I came to make you feel better, like I promised.”

“I told you not to come. Why don’t you fucking listen?”

My smile faded.

“I was worried about you.” I said, wondering why he was so agitated.

“Babe? Who are you talking to?” A female voice called from the bedroom.

I paled.

“Joe, who is that in your room?” I asked. I could feel my blood pressure rising.

I didn’t wait long for an answer. Chloe walked out of the bedroom wearing his T.shirt.

Ivy's Pov I tried to be as quiet as possible when I entered Paul’s room that morning, but he opened his eyes before I was half way. “Should I say any last words?” He muttered. I laughed. “I don’t think so, I’m not here to kill you.” I sat on the bed. “Happy birthday. I wanted to be the first to give you your present.” “Wow, I didn’t know you’d bother to get me anything.” He said softly. “Of course I did. I told you I would. Open it.” He opened it carefully and smiled at the gold watch inside. “It’s beautiful. I love it.” He said. “You’ll wear it at your party.” I smiled. His face fell. “I told you I don’t want a party.” “But why?” “I don’t feel like celebrating. I don’t have anything to celebrate anyway.” “Yes you do.” I pointed at his arm. “That is something. You can move it. And it gives me hope your legs will one day move too. Please, let’s have this party. I promise I won’t invite anyone outside members of the household.” Not that I know an

Ivy's Pov "Sweetheart, where did you get that?” Grandma asked, wide eyed. I looked down at the necklace Kendra had given me, I’d worn it that morning when I'd left the house but forgot to take it off. “A friend gave it to me.” I stammered. “Who? Where did you meet them?” “At work. Why? What’s wrong?” “Are you sure you didn’t find it at our house?” She asked. “Tell me the truth.” “No, I didn’t. Someone gave it to me. Why? Do we have such a necklace at home?” I asked. She shook her head. “No. Forget it.” She said. “Grandma, you are hiding something.” “So are you. I’m sick not stupid. You are not telling me the truth about this job. What are you hiding?” “Nothing.” I said quickly. “You know you are a horrible liar Ivy. Tell me the truth? What are you really doing? I hope it’s not illegal.” “No. And if it is, I’m doing it for you.” I said, irritated she was criticizing me when all my effort was to make sure her medical bills had been paid. “So its my fault you

Ivy’s Pov The next morning, Jenna came to see me and handed me the key and papers to Jan’s house.“She delivered it yesterday but I couldn’t reach you.” She explained.“Thank you.” I smiled at the key, thinking how excited Tess would be.I decided I would go and personally had Tess the key, and see my grandmother. I was missing her so much and wanted to see how she was doing. But getting there would be a problem. I couldn’t go as Ivy Sullivan, the whole country would hear about it and wonder why I was there. It would make Ivy mad. The only option was to go as myself. Ivy Carter.I called the airport and booked a flight, then went to tell Paul I’d going away for a few days.“Why so suddenly? Is everything okay?” He asked.“Yeah, fine. I want to go buy you a present.” I lied.“What can’t be bought here?”I laughed awkwardly.“Something special, and I have a little business to attend to.”He didn’t looked convinced but shrugged.“Okay. Ivy"s Pov Kendra came after breakfast and, because I knew Ivy Sullivan’ advice won’t work, I decided to go with her and hope for the best. Thankfully, she did all the talking so all I had to do was smile and nod. We drove to the mall. “I know you have such great taste Ivy, which is why I want you to help choose the wedding outfits.” She said. Shopping was a nightmare. She kept asking my opinion on clothes, and I didn’t know what to say. So I said yes to everything. We walked for hours looking at nearly every dress in the department store, till my feet were ready to fall off. “Maybe we should stop for a snack,” I suggested, feeling exhausted. “Good idea. I’m starving.” We went to a nearby restaurant and ordered for some lunch. “Now to the other reason I wanted to talk to you.” Kendra said. I swallowed nervously “It’s about your Uncle Dan.” She continued. “What about him?” I asked, wondering who he was. “Some weeks ago I was going through his stuff, I’ve had them

Ivy's Pov “My aunt?” I asked. “Yes your aunt Kendra.” James answered. Paul rolled his eyes. “I’m sure you’ve been expecting her any day, get ready for the shopping of the century.” He grinned.. I felt sweat break out all over me. Dealing with Ivy’s friends was hard, dealing with her family, especially an aunt I knew nothing about would be a nightmare! “I…can’t…see..her. please tell her I can’t see her.” I stammered. “She won’t leave unless you do.” James replied. “He’s right. She can be stubborn” Paul agreed. “Just go talk to her. Tell her she’ll be right there.” He told James. My heart was hammering so hard it hurt. How was I going to escape this mess? “Hey are you okay?” Paul asked seeing my pale face. “No, I’m not feeling so good. I don’t want to see anyone. Let James send her away.” I said. “Relax,” he said gently, “I know your aunt can be difficult, but she does love you. Go talk to her, tell her how you feel and arrange to see her later.” I

Ivy' s PovJoe strode into my office looking pleased with himself. I almost smiled. He had no idea what was coming to him.Ms. Sinclair, it’s great to hear from you.” He said. "You have thought about our proposal? “Yes, I’ve thought about it and I’ll like to work with your company. Tell me more about it.” I listened as he talked, then asked him the questions I'd written down. He answered, not suspecting anything. “My team will be in touch with you before the end of the week.” I said when he was done. “Thank you Ms. Sinclair. It means a lot to my career and Sarah’s.” “How long have you been together?” I asked casually. “Not too long, nearly a month.” He said. Around the same time he dumped me, I thought, the asshole couldn’t stay without cheating. I walked him to the door and promised to be in touch. “I’ll be looking forward to it.” He said. No you won’t you son of a bitch. I thought. I passed the information I'd gotten out of him to Ted, then snuck out
