Morning light hit the iron rafters of the Savona Maritime Archive Building on Pier 2, illuminating dust motes dancing over stacks of leather-bound shipping registers.

Elena Rossi sat at a long oak table in the basement vault, three brass lamps casting yellow circles across row upon row of yellowed ledger pages. Four hundred leather binders from the Moretti family archives lined the surrounding steel shelves, their spines stamped with gold dates extending back fifty years.

Dante Moretti walked down the stone stairs, his wool coat draped over his forearm. He set a hot mug of dark coffee on the table beside her notebook.

"The impounded tanker Albatros II moved to the naval drydock under armed guard."

Elena didn't look up from her magnifying glass. Her finger tracked a series of handwritten entries from 2011.

"Your father kept two distinct accounting systems for the northern transit corridor, Don Moretti."

Dante pulled a wooden chair out and sat opposite her, leaning his elbows on the oak table.

"My father recorded every euro that crossed his docks."

"He recorded every commercial euro on these public ledgers. But twenty million dollars in annual transit fees disappeared into an unlisted escrow account titled Project Cerberus."

Elena turned a heavy parchment page, pointing to a series of coded bank routing stamps from Zurich and Luxembourg.

"Look at the quarterly payouts. Salvatore Vanezi didn't steal six hundred thousand dollars a month from the fuel pool on his own initiative. Your father authorized those payments as part of a secret thirty-year territorial easement agreement."

Dante's flint-gray eyes narrowed as he examined the dark ink signatures.

"My father never mentioned a Cerberus easement."

"He hid the agreement because Cerberus carries a lethal default clause. If the Moretti-Rossi Maritime Trust fails to maintain a fifty-five percent liquidity margin at the end of this quarter, the easement transfers operational control of Pier 2 directly to the Corsican Syndicate in Marseille."

Dante stood up, walking to the narrow basement window overlooking the harbor quay.

"The Corsican Syndicate controls the deepwater smuggling routes through the Bonifacio Strait. If they gain operational footing on Pier 2, Savona becomes a transit hub for illegal arms shipments within sixty days."

"Salvatore Vanezi knows about the Cerberus default clause. He used Gianni's road blockades and the court freeze orders to bleed our quarterly liquidity before the end-of-month audit."

A heavy iron door at the top of the vault stairs slammed shut with a metallic boom.

Footsteps rushed down the stone steps. Marco entered the room, his hand gripping his service weapon.

"Don Dante. Four unflagged utility vans entered the Pier 2 perimeter three minutes ago. Ten armed men in dark tactical gear breached the main administrative office upstairs."

Dante drew his Beretta from his shoulder holster, checking the magazine feed with a crisp metallic click.

"Gianni Vanezi?"

"Gianni leads them, but these men carry military carbines. Salvatore hired Corsican contract mercenaries to clean out the archive building."

Elena closed the Cerberus ledger, sliding the heavy leather book into her canvas satchel along with her laptop.

"They came to destroy the original paper agreements before we present the audit to the Genoa tribunal."

Dante grabbed her arm, pulling her behind the reinforced steel pillar near the vault exit.

"Marco, take the secondary stairwell and secure the upper fuse box. Cut the power to the main hall."

Marco nodded once and vanished up the narrow service corridor.

Glass shattered on the ground floor above, followed by the muffled chatter of suppressed automatic gunfire tearing through wooden office partitions. Smoke drifted down the open stairwell, smelling of burnt cordite and gasoline.

Dante peered around the edge of the steel pillar, his weapon raised.

"They poured accelerant in the upper hallway. They intend to burn the entire building."

Elena unclipped a brass master key from her belt, pointing toward a heavy iron hatch behind the rear book stacks.

"The old coal chute connects directly to the subsea utility tunnel under Pier 2. The tunnel leads straight to the harbor master's office."

Footsteps thundered down the stone steps as three mercenaries in black balaclavas rounded the landing, their carbine barrels sweeping the room.

Dante stepped out from behind the pillar, firing three shots in rapid succession.

Sparks flew off the stone steps as the lead mercenary collapsed against the iron railing. The remaining two men ducked behind a row of steel book shelves, returning fire with short automatic bursts that shredded leather-bound volumes, filling the air with flying paper and dust.

Elena unlocked the iron hatch, throwing the heavy plate open.

"The chute is clear!"

Dante fired two rounding shots down the aisle, keeping the mercenaries pinned behind the falling book racks.

"Get into the tunnel, Elena!"

Elena slid into the dark coal chute, her boots finding the steel ladder rungs below just as a fragmentation grenade bounced down the stone stairs, clinking loudly against the bottom step.
