8. The Beta

It was forbidden for servants to stare directly into the eyes of their masters. So when Daniel led her away from Flora and Caty, Kiara glued her eyes to the floor. The Beta's displeasure showed soon after as he raised his tone of voice, which made her flinch.

"Which one is your room?"

She pointed to the hallway where her room was. When she first started working here, the servants' pavilion was full. There was only one small room that seemed to have been used as a warehouse that she could live in. Luckily, Aunt Pansy and Ghea helped her make it into a more decent bedroom. They gave her a mattress and a blanket.

Even so, the stuffy air could not be removed, nor could the cold as the night approached due to the absence of heaters or fireplaces.

"Where do you keep your medicine? I will help you treat your wounds". Kiara could see the Beta did his best not to comment on the sad state of her bedroom.

Not much medicine was kept there, even so she reached into the drawer of the wooden night
