Chapter one

Elara's pov

"Just hold on tight it will soon be over." I comforted the screaming woman beside me. Sweat trickled down her neck as she alternated between sobbing and screaming.

"The baby's head is coming, any moment now." The pack doctor informed us and I held onto the woman's hand tighter.

"I can't, I can't do it." She shook her head.

"Yes, you can." I countered.

"No, not without Tom. Tom should be here with me." She sobbed out before screaming as another contraction hit her. I couldn't help but feel guilty about the pain and loss she was going through. I had failed my pack as a Luna, they had put their trust in me and I had let them down.

"Listen to me, Lena. Tom would want you to be strong in his absence, this child is the last reminder of him you'll ever have...do you really want to let that go?" I asked and the woman's eyes met mine and held. I masked the pain I felt, letting her see determination and strength, as was expected of their Luna.

I couldn't imagine how hard it would be for her to have a child without her mate. A mate who was dead because I wasn't able to do my job right. The woman nodded slowly at me and when the doctor urged her to push, she pushed with all her might. She squeezed my hand so tight I couldn't feel a thing anymore but I didn't let go, she needed all the strength I could lend her. A few minutes later, the piercing scream of an infant filled the room and her beautiful baby boy was placed in her arms. Lena smiled down at her child, her eyes shone with love and I couldn't help the spark of envy and longing that spread within me.

"Thank you Luna Elara, thank you so much. I wouldn't have been able to do it without you." She looked up at me, her eyes filled with gratitude.

"It's the least I can do Lena. You are welcome to live in the pack house until you can find your feet." I informed her before I moved away.

I let out a sigh of relief as I closed her door behind me. I slowly strolled towards the emergency unit, bracing myself for what I would see.

"Are there any more casualties?" I asked one of the doctors as soon as I stepped into the room.

The metallic smell of blood invaded my senses the deeper I walked into the room. As I passed by, I looked at my pack members, some of whom had sustained bad injuries and some of whom were fighting for their lives. They were all surrounded by their loved ones who were sobbing uncontrollably. As I walked passed them, I couldn't tell if I was imagining or if they were looking at me with anger and hatred in their eyes.

"Two more men died this evening." The doctor informed me, breaking me out of my thoughts and I rapidly blinked back the tears that pooled in my eyes. The last thing my pack needed right now was a weak Luna.

"Inform them they are free to move to the pack house if they feel unsafe going back to their homes. Everything will be provided for them." I told her and she nodded before walking off.

"It isn't your fault Luna." Doctor Kyle, the head pack doctor, said as he approached me. Kyle was an elderly man who used more herbs for his treatments, he had been the pack doctor ever since I was a little child and he was almost like a father to me.

"That's debatable. Anything I can help with?" I asked, changing the subject.

"We already have all hands on deck Elara. You haven't gotten a wink of rest ever since the attack." He observed.

"How can I rest Kyle? How could I possibly rest when my pack just got attacked by hunters and there was nothing I could do to protect them?" I asked at a loss.

How had we gotten here? How had I not seen that there was a traitor in the pack who got close enough to know essential details about our border security?

Kyle's lips turned downwards and he looked like he had something to say but before he could speak the speakers strategically stationed at different points of the pack went off.

"All members of the Nightshade pack should be present for an emergency meeting in front of the pack house now. I repeat everyone should be present at the pack house for an important meeting now." Silas's voice boomed through the speakers and my heart squeezed for my mate. If things were bad for me here, I could only imagine how bad he was feeling.

Calling an emergency meeting most likely meant he had found whoever had betrayed the pack and wanted to address the issue. My eyes widened in realization and I turned to Kyle.

"I know you have to go and support your mate. You are a wonderful luna, Elara and Silas couldn't have asked for a more perfect mate." Kyle patted my shoulder before he turned and walked away.

Tears prickled the back of my eyes as I walked out of the infirmary and made my way to the pack house. Most wolves had gathered in front and the whole place was abuzz with murmuring and anticipation. Everyone, no doubt, wanted to know what was going on.

"Alpha, I was just at the infirmary. What have you found?" I asked Silas, my mate, as I walked up to him.

He stared at me blankly, his eyes cold and hard.

"What's wrong? Has something happened?" My brows furrowed in confusion.

"Seize her." He called out to the guards who sprang into action and restrained me. I groaned as they twisted my hands behind my back and pushed me down until I was kneeling on the floor.

What the hell was happening?

Chapter 131Phil's POV The green light glowed from within the jar, a thousand more jars of wildfire explosives stocked up inside an underground tunnel. It was magnificent.I'd never believe that wildfire still existed if I didn't trust Sinclair to tell the truth. Now, I was seeing it with my own eyes—how could I not believe it? The jar was then closed up, “This is mind-blowing." I said to Sinclair as we stood inside the dimly lit tunnel with extra torchlights in our hands. One of the gamma that had closed the jar, took it back up to where the other jars were stockpiled.“I know. It would certainly be enough to bring Hon’s entire territory down to ashes,” Sinclair replied.“Tell me, who else has been down here?" I asked. “Honestly, you'd be the first outsider. My own wife didn't even want to be here. She says it's too dark and scary with all the explosives.”Sinclair explained, “Why do you ask?" “We can't trust anyone. News flies so fast and I wouldn't be surprised if Hon already kn

Chapter 130Lucy's POV Bummer!I should have hidden them—they were supposed to be thrown away after use. It was all I thought of as I watched the shocked expression on Phil's face.“Phil, I can explain,” I said softly, but deep down I had nothing to give as an excuse. And that only made Phil angrier. He entered my room, slamming the door behind him.“What explanation do you have for this?” He asked, his teeth gritted. With the way he was fuming with anger, it made me gulp the sudden lump that appeared in my throat. And honestly, I have never seen Phil this infuriated.“I'm listening, Lucy," he added loudly. And at that moment, all I had in mind was to speak the truth. Lying was my thing, but suddenly I couldn't find a lie in this awkward situation. Then Phil's phone rang, disrupting the heated moment which gave me a little bit of time to think of a lie. But nothing came forth. In a situation like this, Phil declined the call, shoving his phone back into his pocket. His gaze darkened

Chapter 129Phil's POV “Carlos?" Sinclair snapped."What kind of baby name is that?" he hissed, “It sounds odd—like saying ‘Careless’.My brows drew together, “No, it definitely doesn't sound like that." I said flatly, my tone laced with exhaustion. I had come to pay Sinclair a visit, to discuss more about the war but somehow the conversation diverted to baby names. He was a proud father, eager to have a name for his baby—a baby he had no idea what gender it was.“Fine, here's another one.” Keith thought, "Serevus.” He said. Sinclair scoffed, "Now, that sounds like, ‘Serve us.’ if you say it really fast.” “Serevus." He repeated. We all laughed at him.Having clowns like Keith and Sinclair in a gathering wasn't really advisable if you intend on doing something serious. Although—all I wanted to do was dive deeper into matters concerning the war, but then, it had been a while I genuinely laughed this way—so hard that my jaws began to hurt.“Then name him after you. Sinclair Junior." I

Chapter 128Andrew's POVRick was helping me test some clothes for the upcoming festival and Vera was present because I had pleaded with her to be here. Because women do have a genuine opinion regarding issues such as this. And she was good at it. Maybe a little annoyed, too. She stood with her arms folded across her chest, leaning into the doorframe as she inspected my outfit as if I were in court."Very retro," she said finally, and for a moment, the tense shoulders on me eased."Aww, it's the festival theme." Rick interrupted gladly. We had a final verdict after a few costumes were turned down."It's retro and all that, but is it Alphaly enough?" I asked. Before Vera had time to respond, the door cracked open and Diana marched in without knocking. Her eyes swept past each one of us, then at Vera for a fleeting moment before concentrating on me finally. "I need to talk to you," she declared, her tone cold enough to cut through the air.Vera gazed at me with a raised eyebrow, and she

Chapter 127Lucy's POVPhil's question didn't go unnoticed. He had asked whether Vera was really innocent of our baby's murder. That question lingered in his mind for a reason—and I was about to find out why.I drove down to the physician's hospital. Ross would probably go bonkers seeing me after such a long time—and especially because he'd refused to schedule an appointment with me through his secretary. But I wasn't someone who took no for an answer. And my instincts tell me Mr Ross told Phil something about the fake pregnancy. I was uncertain. Still, it was best to—personally—remind him that I held the leash on his family and entire reputation. And any wrong move he tries to make would come with its consequences. My phone beeped. A message flashed from my reliable source keeping tabs on Ross’s daughter in college. And good news—Ross’s little girl was being watched carefully. A small smile spreads across my lips, satisfied to know I still have control over the physician. Finally, I

Chapter 126Scarlett's povI stifled a groan as the under of my feet hurt with every step we took.I stared down at Silas' hand intertwined with mine before my gaze moved up to his face and I noticed he had a small frown on his lips as he looked straight ahead.I wondered what he could be thinking but rather than ask, I remained silent by his side and tried to keep up with his pace."I think we should go see Gary before we return to the pack," I announced and Silas' eyes snapped to me."I want to share what I found with him and hear what he has to say," I explained and Silas nodded. We resumed walking in silence and I glimpsed that frown on Silas' lips once more, I couldn't help but wonder if he was already regretting what had happened between us and if he actually meant what he said about us figuring it out together.I was so lost in thought and barely looking in front of me until I tripped over a small rock and fell face forward.Silas's hand which was intertwined with mine pulled m
