Willow's POV
“Willow, wake up”
Was the first thing I heard before I felt wet all over. My eyes snapped open instantly as I jumped off the bed. I didn't need to check to know what had happened.
My cousin, Stella, had doused me with water in a bid to wake me up.
“What is wrong with you?” I shot at her as I peeled off my bed spread from the bed.
“You're going to be late for the market” she tossed the keys out stall at me. I bent down to pick them up as I glared at her. She rolled her eyes and sauntered out of my room.
Today was my birthday, I was turning 18 and supposed to get my mate but just like any other year. No one cared and I was still going to work. My mother married a human and died right after giving birth to me and my father ran away leaving me in the care of my uncle and aunt who were omegas and already struggling to care for their two kids.
I instantly became a burden in their lives and to pay the debts, they've made me work for my keep.
I only work after school on weekdays but today is Saturday meaning I get to work all through.
Yay me…
The door to my room pushed open aggressively. My aunt stood framed in the doorway. Her eyes scanned me once in a quick and sharp motion. It felt wrong. She always had words ready for me, but now she only watched, as if trying to memorize every line of my face and body. It was creepy.
“I'm sorry I woke up late, I'll shower and head to the shop right now” I said, and made to move, but she stretched a hand out to stop me.
“Wait Willow. Isn't today your birthday?”
My eyes widened. I could not believe it. She remembered.
“Give me the key. You don't have to work today. Seth would work today” she continued. Seth was Stella's older brother. He should have been at college, but there was no money, so he stayed at home while the family saved for next year.
“Thank you” I managed to say due to the shock I was experiencing.
She reached behind her and produced a bag I had not noticed.
“I got this for you. Clean up and put it on. I'm making breakfast” she said, and left before I could answer.
I stared at the bag, stunned. In all eighteen years of my life, no one had remembered my birthday like this. No one had ever brought me a gift. For seven years I had been the one stirring the porridge, flipping the eggs, making sure everyone else ate first, it was the first time in seven years that I was not the one making breakfast. The small, warm swell of something like hope sat in my chest.
Today felt different. I could feel it, and I hoped I was right.
Excitement made me hurry through the shower. I was done in less than ten minutes. The dress my aunt had bought was beautiful. I had never owned anything new. I wore hand-me-downs from Stella and Seth, patched sleeves and faded collars. This dress was untouched, soft as if it belonged to someone with a nice family background.
The mirror greeted me with an unfamiliar reflection. The black knee-length gown hugged me in places I had never noticed before. I had never seen myself as curvy before this. I sat and smoothed my hair, thinking of my mother. My brown hair and brown eyes were hers. My mother had been pretty. There was comfort in the fact that I looked like her.
“There she is. My beautiful niece” my uncle called as I came down the stairs.
Something tightened inside me. My uncle had never been kind to me. He had never accepted me. He said I was a mistake his sister had made, that I should have died instead of her. His words haunted me daily.
I tried to accept my aunt's sudden kindness, but my uncle's sudden softness felt wrong. I descended the stairs and saw them all watching me. Stella was setting the table with the good dishes. That could only mean one thing: we were having a guest.
Was that why they were being so pleasant?
Was it someone from my father’s family? Was it my father?
Was I finally going to leave the werewolf town and go live with humans who wouldn't treat me bad for being a half human.
“There is something you should know,” my aunt began.
“You are 18 now. You are an adult” my uncle added.
“What's going on?” I asked, my voice smaller than I felt. My stomach twisted, I knew I was not going to like what they had to say
“We can no longer take care of you. We are barely surviving” my aunt said. Her voice cracked. She was a strong woman; when she trembled, I knew something had to be terribly wrong.
“What's happening?” I asked again.
“We found a man for you to marry” my uncle cut in.
Marriage?
Me?
“What?” My breath stopped cold.
“He is very wealthy. He will help us out and he will take good care of you” he said, like it was a simple transaction.
“I'm still in high school” I said, clutching at the last thread of argument.
“I don't care,” he replied.
My thinking wheels began to move quickly.
“My mate…” I suddenly said out loud
“What about my mate? I could still find him”
My aunt shook her head
“You're half human, the chances that you have a mate are very slim. This man wants you now”
She was right. I didn't even have a wolf. Why did I think I would get a mate?
“Please, I don't want to get married. I'll work harder. I'll open the shop during the day on weekdays…” I was still talking when my uncle stepped forward and struck me hard across the face. I stumbled back and pressed my palm to my cheek. Pain bloomed through my skin.
“You will do as I say or I will kill you with my own hands” he snarled.
“Kill me” I whispered, daring him with my eyes. “Because I'd rather die than be sold off”
He grabbed my neck in his hands and squeezed. The world narrowed to the pressure at my throat. I clawed at his grip, gasping as my legs lifted off the floor. Fear and fury mixed within me. I scratched his hand and begged him to let go, but he did not relent until his wife intervened.
“Leave her alone. Please we need her to look fine or else he may not want her” she begged.
He released me and I crumpled to the floor. My hand went to my throat where his fingers had left an imprint. I rubbed until the blood returned properly to the skin.
Then a knock sounded at the door.
“Get up quickly,” my aunt hissed.
I stood, wiping a tear that had escaped down my cheek. Whoever was at that door was my future, and the thought made my stomach flip with dread.
The door opened and my jaw dropped immediately.
Willow’s POVAs Lucas left, Julian came into my room right after him. He closed the door behind himself and walked over, he had a ridiculous grin on his face as inched closer. “Hey, you” He stopped right in front of me and leaned down. The sudden closeness made my heart skip. But Mia. I placed a hand firmly against his chest, stopping him before our lips could meet.Julian stopped, looking a bit shocked and hurt by my rejection. “What did Lucas tell you?” he asked, his voice dropped“It is not about Lucas” I said, shaking my head as I dropped my hand. “Mia can walk in at any time. What if she sees us?”“So what if she does?” “Mia is in love with you, and she is my best friend”Julian looked at me, a sudden cloud of doubt passed over his face. “Do you regret what happened last night?”I met his eyes instantly, wanting to erase that look from his face. “No, I don't. I don't regret it at all, Julian. But I can't let Mia know until it's the right time. Can we just keep it a secr
Willow’s POV“Woah” Julian let out as he stepped back from the kiss. My heart was beating fast. I had never done something so bold before. What if he didn’t like it? “I’m sor…” before I could finish. His hand wrapped around my waist and he pulled me close. I felt goosebumps as he leaned down and our lips met again. My eyes closed instinctively. I gripped his arms for support as our lips moved in sync. We separated again and he stared into my eyes as if searching for an answer. “What does this mean?” He whispered with a smile on his face.“I think it means I want to give us a chance” I matched his smile. His hand cupped my face and I leaned into his touch. I never noticed how big his hands were before. “I promise you won’t regret this decision” he whispered gently. I nodded and deep down. I knew he was the right one for me. No one else understood me like him. No one else loved me like him. I may not have felt strongly for him as I did for Lucas but that was just because of the
Willow’s POVJust like I expected, Lucas didn’t tell me the truth. He gave me a half assed explanation that made no sense but I didn’t argue. Getting Caleb to his family was more important. Cassie was so happy to see Caleb and his family were relieved. He had lost his memory of what happened and instead of helping him remember, Lucas blatantly lied to his family saying hie was kidnapped by rogues. Once I settled in my room. I dropped flat on my bed and spread my arms wide.Everything I knew was a lie.My father was not a human. He was a witch. I sat up right and crossed my arms around my knees. I wondered if my dad was fine. If he even knew that I was alive. Was he in Enchantia? I had answers about who I was but it only led me to more questions. As I shifted on the bed. A piece of paper dropped from my pocket. It was the letter Julian wrote. When I kept this, I had no idea why but now in a world where I had to guess everything. There was one thing I did not have to guess and
Lucas’s POV“Bloody hell” the wizard king yelled. “You trashed my bunker and almost killed my staff and you can’t remember any of it?”“I…” Willow started to say but the wizard king was livid“Are you mentally okay? Aren’t wild wolf hybrids supposed to be kept locked up in some…”“Do not talk to her like that?” I interrupted him, setting myself in front of her protectively.“You brought this upon yourself when you took our own”“I only did that to…” the wizard king started“That doesn’t matter now. Let him out of there, he needs help” I stated seriously. The wizard king gestured to one of the scared scientists“Take him and give him some medical help. The project is over” The scientist opened the cage and helped Caleb up before leading him up the stairs for help.“Something isn’t right, Lucas. Why does he keep talking like you’re aware of this” Willow said in a low voice behind me“I’ll explain everything later”“What are you?” The wizard king asked, he was looking straight at Will
Lucas’s POVI walked down slowly behind him, my muscles tensed and ready for a fight. I expected to see a commotion with his staff or Caleb trying to escape, but instead I saw…The heavy metal door to the bunker was wide open. Broken glass and scattered papers covered the cold concrete floor, reflecting the harsh white lights of the lab. Two scientists were curled up in fear in a corner. Then I saw her.Willow.But she did not look like the girl I knew. She was on top of a heavily armored guard, pinning him to the floor with terrifying strength. Her hands were gripped tight around his collar. When she looked up for a split second, my breath caught in my throat. Her eyes were not their usual color. They were a glowing, piercing red. Her claws were fully extended, digging deep into the thick fabric of the guard's uniform. She looked feral, driven by a raw, unfiltered rage that I had never seen in her before. She was beautiful. The Wizard King pushed past me, his face twisted in shoc
Lucas’s POV“This ought to be a joke” the Wizard King said. He straightened himself in his chair, his eyes following the door for a long moment after Willow had left the room. I stood my ground, my feet planted firmly on the plush carpet. “With all due respect, I would not leave my pack and come here for the sake of comedy”I hated, no loathed when people did not take me seriously. The King leaned forward, his face hardened into a mask of cold fury. “The kid we took was because of you. You know that!”I felt a surge of heat in my chest, guilt mixed with a pang of fear but I did not let it show. “I specifically told my father to stop. No one needs to be hurt for my sake. Let the boy go”“I cannot do that” he snapped“You will do as I say” I countered. I didn't raise my voice, but I let the weight of my words hang in the air. I was done having a peaceful conversation. He stood up abruptly, his shadow loomed large against the bookshelves. “You are a puppy compared to me. You are on
Lucas’s POVI tried to stay away. I really did. But my mind kept drifting to her. I wondered how she was doing.Willow had faced two rejections in a single day and the same day she got her wolf. That was enough to break a seasoned warrior, let alone a girl who had spent her life being treated like a
Willow’s POV“I…”I could see the shift in his eyes, the way the warmth was being vacuumed out, replaced by the iron-cold discipline of a guy who knew nothing but duty.My heart started to hammer against my ribs, not with excitement this time, but with a sickening dread. I knew that look. It was the
Willow’s POV “Going somewhere?"It wasn’t the Luna. Ever since last night, I could recognise that voice even in my sleep. His footsteps were slow and deliberate as he stepped into the light. The moon caught him just right, silver washing over his features until he looked almost unreal. A simple ta
Willow’s POVA hand shot up in front of me, smacking the ball away with a meaty thud. It ricocheted off Stella's face with a sickening crack. She let out a loud cry and people gathered around her. It was him. The same boy who had offered me money to leave his house. He had just saved me from Stel
