LOGINWillow's POV
Him?
They wanted me to marry him?
The man who walked into our living room looked older than my uncle. His hair was all white and his face had begun to crease. He seemed to be in his fifties. He was tall and still broad for an older man, but that did not change the fact that he was old.
Too old.
His eyes travelled over my body with a glint that made my skin crawl. He turned to my uncle and licked his lips.
“She is beautiful,” he said, coming closer.
A shiver ran through me at the sound of his voice. I knew who he was.
Augustus Black.
He was the town's notorious bachelor. He used money to cover his crimes and he took advantage of the younger girls. Money was not his only power. He was the older brother to the pack's Luna, and that protection meant he could do as he pleased.
No one in their right mind would marry him.
My aunt and uncle were only blinded by poverty.
“What's your name sweetheart?” His hand touched my face and bile rose in my throat. I remembered the girl in the market who had said he had raped her after her stepmother sent her to deliver vegetables to his house.
Why would they set me up with him?
“Can't you speak?” He stepped closer. His voice had risen a note in annoyance.
His hand moved from my cheek and trailed down my neck. I glanced at my aunt and uncle. They were smiling. Could they not see how he looked at me? Did they not know the vile things he had done?
“Don't touch me” I gasped as his palm slid to my lower back.
He frowned and looked at my uncle. “This was not the deal.”
“We are sorry. She is just shy,” my aunt blurted.
My lips parted to speak but I kept it shut
My uncle stepped forward. “Her name is Willow and as you can see, she is very beautiful and very young. She can give you good pups.”
Augustus laughed with him, then the amusement faded from his face.
“I will take her home. If I like her then we can go along with the plans.”
“No problem. She is all yours,” my uncle said, shoving me forward. I planted my feet and refused to move.
This was wrong.
“What about…?” my aunt started, as she twirled her hair nervously
“Here you go.” Augustus opened a briefcase and passed it to her. When she looked inside her face lit up.
They were selling me for money.
They did not even try to hide it.
“Say your goodbyes. I'll be waiting in the car,” he said and walked out.
The door shut and I collapsed to my knees. “Please, I beg you. I'll be good. Don't sell me to him. Please.” Tears ran freely as I pleaded with joint hands.
“Nonsense. We've already sold you. There is nothing to be done now,” my aunt said, voice flat.
“You either go to the car yourself or I'll take you there by force,” my uncle warned.
“Please don't do this. I'm sorry if I've ever wronged you… just don't…” My words broke as my uncle hoisted me up and carried me toward the door. I fought, but he held me like a sack. He threw me into the car and slammed the door. I flung at it, but it was locked.
“Don't be scared Willow. I don't bite.” Augustus's hand settled on my lap and he stroked it as if comforting a pet.
Tears streamed, but I kept my mouth closed. I was alone with him now. He could hurt me if I wasn't careful.
*********
My tears had not stopped since I arrived. The head maid told me if I obeyed and behaved, I would enjoy my time here, but how could I accept a fate with such a monstrous animal?
They dressed me in black lingerie the maid forced me to wear. My hair was pinned up so it would not get in the way and I had been scrubbed until my skin stung, yet I felt filthy.
I wrapped the thin robe I found around myself and tried to think. I had to escape. But how?
The door opened and Augustus stepped in.
He disgusted me even more now than before.
“Are you ready to behave?” he asked in a low voice.
I nodded, not because I trusted him, but because fear had been rooted in me.
He moved toward the bed and sat down beside me. “You don't have to be scared. I'll be gentle.” He shrugged off his jacket and emptied his pockets on the table.
That was when I saw it.
A knife.
My chest hammered so hard I thought he might hear it. The blade was small, but to me it was everything.
“Excuse me for a minute,” he said and went to the bathroom.
When he returned he was different, he was a little slow, unfocused, as if he had swallowed something that pulled at the edges of his senses, maybe he took a pill. He grabbed me from the bed and dragged me against him. His body pressed into mine. My skin crawled.
Every nerve screamed for me to run, but I had to remain careful. One wrong move and he could end me.
“You're very pretty” he murmured and leaned in to kiss me. I turned my face away immediately. My first kiss was not going to be with a man like this.
Annoyed, he clamped a hand on my cheek to force me still. His fingers dug into my skin and his breath reeked of wine and something sharper.
Panic turned my fingers into ice. I slid my hand inside my robe and closed around the knife. My arm shook, hairs standing on end. Adrenaline split through me like lightning. I pictured the market girl's face, my uncle and aunt's face, and the briefcase that had bought me. There was no other way.
Just as his lips bent toward mine, I drove the blade forward into his gut. I twisted it and kicked him down. He let out a grunt and fell to the ground with a heavy thud.
I did not stop to listen to the noises of the room. I tightened my robe around myself, took some things from the table and fled.
I tore out of the house and into the woods. Footsteps pounded behind me. I did not look back. I knew Augustus's men would chase. I ran blind between trees, lungs burning, branches whipping at my face. Every snap of a twig made me flinch. My heart hammered against my ribs so loudly I feared it would give me away.
“Ouch.” I slammed into a trunk and toppled to the earth, the breath knocked from me. For a moment I thought it was over.
Then a hand grabbed mine and hauled me up. I did not see him clearly; his grip was fierce. He ran and pulled me along.
Something moved inside me. Maybe it was the terror of surviving, maybe the fear that I could be killed in any second but I knew, with a certainty that surprised me, that the person holding my hand was not just my savior, he was my…
Willow’s POV"I do not like him " I replied quickly and involuntarily raised my hands up. I could feel the heat rising to my cheeks.Cassie’s smile widened as she moved closer to me "I saw how you looked at him just now. You practically stopped breathing when he wiped his face"I adjusted my seat on the bleachers, trying to look anywhere but at the court or at Cassie"I just looked at him. What do you mean?"Cassie hit my arm playfully. "You know exactly what I mean, Willow"I unconsciously looked back at the field where Lucas was playing. He had a determined look on his face as he ran with the ball. He managed to dribble past each player and threw the ball into the net with such ease it looked like he was even bored. He turned to where I was sitting and our eyes met again, he had a smug smile and I immediately looked away. I could feel the heat in my cheeks again. And then a realization hit me. I sucked in a breath. Cassie was right. I did like him. It was not just the mate’s
Willow’s POVI sat across from Mia at our usual lunch table. The cafeteria food was not bad but my mind was elsewhere. I should’ve been thinking of the Tecans or last night but all I could think of was Julian and Mia. I could not hold it in anymore, I had to ask. "What happened with Julian?" I asked in a low voice "Last night he told me that he turned you down"Mia picked up a fry and shrugged as she munched it down. "Maybe he realized he was wrong" she said with a bright smile.I frowned. Something was definitely wrong. Last night the way Julian spoke to me. He was relieved to turn Mia down. It wasn’t a mistake. He had specifically told me he liked someone else, but I could not bring myself to say that to her face."Something just seems off, Mia” Her smile dropped instantly. She let out an annoyed huff. "Can't you just be happy for me?" she snapped. "All this negativity is really toxic"I pulled back, vividly stung by her words."Im sorry" I apologized quickly. Before I could s
Willow’s POV“Some people are just naturally nice” I gave Lucas a pointed look. “Not everyone has an agenda”He shrugged my words off“I didn’t ask you here so we could argue about Julian”“Why did you ask me here?” I swallowed hard and met his eyes.Part of me wondered if this was the moment. Was he going to take back his rejection? In this library, surrounded by beautiful books and the quiet, historical atmosphere, it would be the perfect setting.“The monster that attacked us. There’s a book on it here” Lucas said.Oh. I facepalmed myself. Why did I think we would be here for anything else? “Maybe there’s a book that explains your powers too” he added “I don’t have powers” I argued. “It was just a spur of the moment”“You had a vision before and now this. Willow, isn’t it clear that there is something different about you?”I let out a heavy sigh. Maybe being different was appealing to some people, but not to me. I had lived most of my life without a wolf, and being an outsider
Willow’s POV “So….” I leaned towards Julian with an interested smile. It was sad that he and Mia couldn’t work but that didn’t mean I couldn’t interested in his love life “Who is the lucky lady?” Julian shrugged. The weariness from earlier had totally worn out and now he looked better. I hoped Mia would feel the same too “You’ll know when the time is right” “But do I know her?” He shook his head “I’m not sure you two have met” “Is she from your college?” “No. I met her somewhere else” he said after a minute of silence I leaned closer to him “Are you seriously not going to tell me who she is?” His lips broke into a laugh and he pushed me away gently “Haven’t you heard of personal space?” I pushed his hand away as a soft laugh left my lips “Just show me a picture” “No. Didn’t you say you had to be in the library. Do you even know where that is?” he dusted off his cargo shorts as he stood up “No. I don’t but I know you’re going to show me” “Fine. Let’s go” I foll
Willow’s POVI hurried into my bathroom and rummaged through the bottom cabinet until I found the small white first aid kit that I had seen there before. When I came back out, Lucas was still standing near the window, his hand pressed tightly against his bleeding side.“Please sit” I told him, keeping my voice as calm as possible. He nodded and walked over slowly. He lowered himself onto the edge of my mattress, and the bed dipped heavily under his weight. I pulled up a small chair and sat right in front of him. I opened the kit and pulled out a bottle of antiseptic and a stack of clean cotton pads.“This is going to sting a little” I warned him. He didn’t say anything, he just nodded. His eyes watched my hands. I poured the clear liquid onto the cotton and carefully pressed it against the deep, dark gash on his abdomen. He flinched immediately and grabbed my wrist, pulling it from his body. I stopped and met his eyes.I did my best to ignore the way his hand on mine made Skylar f
Willow’s POVMy hands were still shaking as I looked down at my palms. I could still feel the strange heat buzzing under my skin. I looked back at Lucas, my heart hammered against my ribs. Whatever that was, it was beautiful and scary. “I don’t know” I whispered,“It just came out of me”He stared at me, his chest heaved as he tried to catch his breath. The shock was clear in his dark eyes, but he didn't look afraid of me.“Well, whatever it was” he coughed slightly, leaning against the dirt. “You just saved my life”I froze for a second. The way he said it. The way he looked at me. It felt natural. Like we were made to protect each other. Was this what the Luna meant when she said I had a role to play? “What was that thing?” I asked as I looked back at its disintegrated form. “I’ll explain later” he said in a hoarse voice as he tried to push himself up. “Right now, we have to get Winnie home before her father finds out that she is missing”My hand grazed gently over his bleed
Willow’s POVThe heavy click of the lock sounded and the door creaked open. Sir Augustus walked in, that oily, self-satisfied smirk plastered across his face. He looked at me like I was a prize he’d finally reclaimed from a lost and found bin.I had never been so irritated at a person’s smile. It i
Lucas’s POVI tried to stay away. I really did. But my mind kept drifting to her. I wondered how she was doing.Willow had faced two rejections in a single day and the same day she got her wolf. That was enough to break a seasoned warrior, let alone a girl who had spent her life being treated like a
Willow’s POVI managed to trudge back to my room, every step felt like I was dragging weights attached to my ankles. My head was pounding, a rhythmic drumming that synced with the agonizing ache in my chest. My heart beat with a hollow, frantic thud, and in the back of my mind, I could hear Skylar
Willow’s POV“I…”I could see the shift in his eyes, the way the warmth was being vacuumed out, replaced by the iron-cold discipline of a guy who knew nothing but duty.My heart started to hammer against my ribs, not with excitement this time, but with a sickening dread. I knew that look. It was the
