Leviathan

I woke to the steady thump of a heartbeat. Soft and close.

Nyx.

The clinic ceiling came into focus first, then the scent—gods, her scent—sweet, sharp, dangerous, familiar in a way nothing should be. It flooded my lungs so fast I almost groaned. Heat rolled through me as fast as the fever I'd faked.

Yes. Faked.

Maybe I really was insane.

What other king handpicked symptoms, paid off a healer, and let themselves get sick just to anchor a someone to their bedside? Who else sat for hours watching someone pretend to sleep?

And she did open her eyes right as my self-control snapped.

All that time I kept the act going, I didn't think I had it in me. Not the patience. Not the restraint. Not the willingness to look like a lunatic. But Nyx wasn't someone you won over with normal rules.

Evan told me to stay one step ahead of her.

And so far... I had.

She didn't know I bribed the healer, or that when bribery didn't work I threatened his entire career and reputation in the pack until he

I woke up because something hit my face. A cold something. Raindrop. Then another. Hold on. WHY THE FUCK IS IT RAINING IN THE BEDROOM?! I jolted upright. Sheets were soaked. Hair dripping. Ceiling was crying. Remus, however, was bone dry—because Levi, half-asleep, was holding an umbrella over himself and the baby. "Oh shit!" Levi jerked awake instantly. "You're awake!" "Bro can she make it stop raining?!" Evan yelled from somewhere outside. "It's sunny outside! There's actually THUNDER in the attic!" Levi turned to me in full crisis-husband mode. "Nyx, can you stop it?" I glanced at Remus. Rain stopped. Immediately. ...Good to know the baby doubles as a magic off-switch. I should put that on a sticky note. The Beta's house, however...WAS FLOODED TO HELL. The walls looked like they were melting. Furniture soaked. Water pooling everywhere. One table even grew mushrooms. The mattress squelched under me. A painting slid down the wall with a pathetic splat. "Whoops," I said

Levi hated Kyle. That much was clear. Hated him enough that he banished the poor guy outside to sleep like a stray mutt just because I'd accepted him as my guardian. Pathetic. Now we were standing near the forest edge, drenched in cold mist, Kyle patiently trying to coax magic out of me while Levi glared at him. Two hours. Two hours of nothing. I crossed my arms. "Maybe your teaching sucks." "Your power is tied to emotion, your majesty," Kyle said evenly. "It's currently unstable." "I'm not unstable," I huffed. Levi snorted under his breath. Kyle continued, "If you want control, you must learn to let go. If you can't, we try... alternative methods." He lifted his hand. His palm glowed. And suddenly— Evan and Nelson appeared walking hand-in-hand through some imaginary meadow. Nelson kissed Evan's cheek, Evan turned pink, and the two of them looked like the cheesy ending to a romance drama. "HEY!!!!" Evan's voice ripped through the illusion as he snapped us all out of it.

I couldn't shut my brain off. I couldn't settle my wolf, either. Everything inside that house felt like pure poison, and everything outside the tree line felt too silent. I hated it. I hated her. I hated the confusion strangling me worse. She saved me. That bitch saved my life! I watched the trees blur and sway in the rain, aimlessly, trying to pull an answer out it. None came. She saved me... but she let me rot. She hid me. She sabotaged me. She starved me, neglected me, degraded me—but never let me die. Never let anyone else kill me, either. Why? Why keep me alive if she had nothing to gain? The thought alone made my jaw clench hard enough to crack teeth. I was so deep in my head I didn't even have to turn around to feel Levi creeping up behind me. "Have you known all this time?" I asked the trees. "How much do you know?" Levi wrapped his arms around me from behind, his breath warm on the back of my neck. "I had my suspicions... but would you believe me if I said I ha

Kyle's hands glowed brighter than before. Blinding white light splintered outward like someone had cracked a star open on the table. And then— The world warped around us. We were somewhere else. We weren't in the shabby beta house anymore. We stood in a forest clearing soaked in moonlight. A woman in a pale sage dress moved through wildflowers, humming a lullaby. She looked exactly like Nyx. Same eyes. Same face. Same posture. Same aura. Except softer. Radiant. And heavily pregnant, glowing with joy. Beta Jones— younger, sharper, with fewer wrinkles and more arrogance— walked beside her, holding her arm like he owned her. They looked... happy. My fists curled. My wolf snarled. 'She looks too much like Nyx.' 'Why is he touching her?' 'Why does he smile at her like that?' I nearly ripped the illusion apart out of desperation, but Kyle kept us locked in the vision. The pregnant woman laughed and held her belly and the memory blurred. It was suddenly night time. Rain

The crowd froze the second they saw blood drip down the side of my face. Even the rain seemed to hesitate. Then— "ARE YOU IDIOTS INSANE?! THAT'S THE QUEEN!!!" the old man barked at them, voice cracking desperately. Oh. Now he respects my title? Cute. A raindrop hit my cheek. Then another. Then the drizzle thickened into a light steady shower that hissed across the burning stake— snuffing it out in seconds. Kori tugged at my sleeve, voice trembling. "Y-your forehead is bleeding..." Her sudden concern almost made me want to laugh. Nothing had changed here. Same shallow, sniveling cowards. Same pack that watched me put my head on the chopping block for fun. I wiped the blood from my eye with my thumb. "Enough." The word rolled out of my chest like a real command. And then— every single person collapsed to their knees in submission to me. Gasps. Panic. Scrambling hands digging into the mud as if they could claw their way back to standing. "I—I can't move!" a man cried. "S

"They can't be that stupid!" Evan said incredulously. "They are that stupid," I shook my head. "They always have been." Kyle's voice dropped. "The person they tied up is still alive." That was all I needed to know. I sprinted. My body moved before my mind caught up — instincts sharp, blood roaring, my wolf pushing me forward. Dante might've been an idiot, but even he wouldn't burn an innocent person alive... right? Right? Wrong. Apparently my former pack had gone full medieval the moment someone stopped babysitting their collective IQ. The forest broke around me as I reached the tree line — and there it was. Chaos. Raw, screaming, pitchfork-waving chaos. A crowd gathered around a burning stake just like the one they strapped me to the day they decided I wasn't worth oxygen. Rage, saliva, accusations — the same cocktail as before. The smell of smoke, the crackling of fire, the chanting of idiots who weren't held enough as children. Déjà fucking vu. And then— A scream. "PL
