Chapter 28

I stood in the middle of a dark forest, not knowing how I had gotten there. Towering trees surrounded me, their branches stretching high above my head and blocking out most of the sky. The air was cold, and the silence felt unnatural.

Even the usual sounds of the forest were missing. No rustling leaves, no chirping insects, nothing.

Then I heard it.

A growl.

It came from somewhere between the trees, low and threatening. I turned towards the sound, my heart pounding as I strained to see through

I woke up smiling.Which was rather unusual, considering the last few weeks had given me very little reason to do so.I kissed Lucien. I pressed my lips together, a ridiculous smile spreading across my face.I could still remember the way his hands had rested against my cheeks, the warmth of his touch and the gentleness with which he had kissed me. It hadn't been rushed or demanding. It had been sweet. And I had kissed him back. That was the part I couldn't stop thinking about.I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling again. What exactly did that mean? Was I developing feelings for Lucien, or was it simply the mate bond pulling me towards him? My grandmother had explained that the bond was powerful, but she hadn't told me how to distinguish its influence from my own emotions.I hated that I couldn't tell the difference. A soft knock interrupted my thoughts. "Dahlia? Are you awake?"I recognised Lucien's voice immediately. "Yes!"The door opened slightly, and his head appeared.

The mountains were breathtaking.I had spent most of the journey staring out of the car window, watching the scenery change as we travelled further away from Crescent Hollow. The familiar roads had given way to winding mountain passes, towering pine trees and enormous stretches of green landscape. It was beautiful."You're awfully quiet."I turned towards Lucien, who had one hand resting on the steering wheel. "I'm enjoying the view."He smiled. "You could have said that instead of staring out the window like a tourist.""I am a tourist.""Fair enough."I smiled, settling back into my seat. "How much further?""About fifteen minutes."I looked ahead. "And you said your family lives up here?""On the mountain, yes. We have an estate."Fifteen minutes later, the car turned through a set of enormous wrought-iron gates. A long driveway wound through perfectly maintained gardens, eventually opening towards a magnificent stone mansion.I stared. The property was enormous. The main house st

I had spent most of the night thinking about Grey.Which, quite frankly, was becoming an exhausting habit.I kept replaying our conversation outside the academy, searching for something I might have missed. Some indication that his words hadn't meant what they sounded like. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised I was only making excuses for him. Perhaps I had misunderstood everything.Perhaps when he asked me not to leave, it wasn't because he wanted me to stay. Perhaps he was simply worried about what my grandmother might do to me, or what could happen if I left the academy without understanding the dangers surrounding my bloodline. Maybe there was nothing more to it. And perhaps I needed to accept that. Grey had made it perfectly clear that he didn't want me choosing him. He had also made it clear that he wasn't interested in explaining himself. I couldn't keep chasing someone who seemed determined to push me away. What bothered me more than anything was that

Dahlia's POV The first thing I noticed about my grandmother's hiding place was that it was nothing like I had expected. I had imagined a small wooden cabin tucked away in the forest, perhaps with a fireplace, a few old books and enough space for the two of us to sleep. I certainly hadn't imagined this. The sanctuary opened into a magnificent stone residence, hidden behind a wall of thick trees and climbing ivy. Tall windows stretched across the front of the building, glowing warmly from the light inside. Silver markings had been carved into the stone pillars, and delicate vines curled around the balconies as though the forest itself had grown around the house. It was extravagant. And, judging by the furniture, the artwork and the enormous chandelier hanging above the entrance hall, it was probably worth more than the entire academy. I turned to my grandmother. "Is this where you've been hiding?" She smiled as she stepped past me. "One of the places." "One of the places?" I re

Grey's POV The moment I stepped into the house I knew it was a bad idea. I could hear Lucien, Kieren and Ara talking about Dahlia. "She is not answering my messages," Ara said."Or my calls," Lucien added. "She couldn't have just fallen off the face of the earth. She is probably busy or at the library," Kieren said.As I walked further into the house I saw Lucien was standing near the fireplace, his arms folded across his chest. Kieran was pacing in front of the sofa, running a hand through his reddish-brown hair. Ara sat on the armrest, watching the two of them with an expression that suggested she had already grown tired of their arguing. All three turned towards me."Have you seen Dahlia?" Kieran asked. "Yes," I answered, shortly. I walked past them and headed towards the kitchen. I needed a drink. Preferably something strong enough to erase the last hour from my memory."Grey," Lucien called.I ignored him, opened the cupboard and grabbed a bottle of whiskey. "Where is Dahlia?

Dahlia's POVI wanted to. More than anything, I wanted to turn around and see whether Grey was still standing beneath the trees, watching me walk away. But I knew that if I did, I might not have the strength to keep going. His words continued to echo in my head. Please don't go.I had never heard Grey sound so vulnerable. He was always so certain of himself, so impossibly arrogant that I sometimes wondered whether he had ever experienced a moment of doubt in his life. But when he had looked at me, there had been something in his eyes that I wouldn't forget. And perhaps that was what made leaving so difficult.Meera walked beside me in silence for several minutes. She didn't rush me me to talk. Eventually, I couldn't hold it in any longer. "Why does it seen you two hate each other."Meera glanced at me. "Who?""You and Grey."A faint expression crossed her face. "I wouldn't say hate is the right word.""Well, he certainly doesn't seem to like you very much."Meera gave a quiet laugh.
