Mira's POV

“That's one nasty bruise. You must have slipped in the bathroom or something,” the doctor at the clinic said as she attended to me.

After Zane threatened to involve my mother, I finally gave in and allowed her to bring me to the hospital.

Of course I knew exactly what happened to my hip but I was willing to share the details for two reasons.

One, I was trying so hard not to remember how much pain Kayden had caused me both physically and emotionally.

Two, it wasn't important to dwell on the past since I was going to accept him rejection anyway.

Oh yes there was a third reason. I didn't want to worry Zane. She knew me so well and if I started talking I was afraid I'd reveal much more than I should.

Zane would probably not understand why I wasn't keen on rejecting Kayden even if our relationship was illegal and disgusting.

She wouldn't understand that him being my mate made the situation 100% harder to deal with than most situations.

If Kayden had been just another random stranger who was hot and was my mate then I wouldn't even be in this situation to begin with.

Meeting him at the party would have been enough. I would have introduced him to my mum and sister and his father would have given us his blessings.

Or he would have rejected me for a completely different reason that didn't translate to us now being family.

“Hey babe, does it hurt anywhere?” Zane asked as she hugged me and I sniffed.

“Yes Zane, it hurts so badly. My heart hurts so bad and I don't know how to make the pain stop.” I thought but just gave her a soft smile instead, my vision blurred by tests.

“All good. You just have to stay off that hip for a while, meaning you have to be on bedrest for a couple of weeks.”

I frowned, not liking where this was going. Staying in bed for a few weeks meant my mother was going to find out about this anyway.

“That won't be necessary. I'm sure I'd be okay once I wake up tomorrow morning.”

The doctor shook her head, the smile on her face homely and soft. “I'm sorry my dear but you'd wake up with pains tomorrow since the fall happened today. Afterwards you'd experience major discomfort which would affect your ability to move for a while.”

Zane sighed and patted my arm. “I'll take good care of her doctor so she won't have to move around.” She told her without checking with me first.

The doctor nodded and turned to leave. As she reached the door, she stopped and turned to look at us. “I'd write a prescription of pain meds for you to help ease the pain you'd be experiencing for a while.”

“Thanks doc,” Zane replied while I simply just stared at her, my brain struggling to process my current situation.

How did I always seem to end up in sticky situations like these?

The door closing being the doctor pulled me out of my thoughts and I looked up to find Zane staring at me with concern and worry in her eyes. “You heard the doctor, no strenuous activities for a while. At least your man isn't here so I don't have to worry about you getting some while you're sick.” She teased, her tone playful and I flushed, looking away.

She laughed and got up from the bed. “I promised I wouldn't tell your mum but she's going to find out if you go back home like this and remain in bed as the doctor has asked.”

I nodded realizing it was inevitable.

“Perhaps you could come over to my place? I mean it isn't strange that you sleep over at mine from time to time so what do you think?” she asked and I smiled.

That was perfect. This way my mum won't suspect anything and I could get away with being injured without having to worry her.

“I think you're a genius. Alright, call Cameron to pick us up if he can. I wouldn't want him getting in trouble with his father,” I added the last part quickly and she nodded.

*Sure.” the smile she gave me was so unconvincing I knew I had been right about her and her boyfriend having an argument.

However she was determined to pretend that everything was normal which was kind of the same thing I was doing.

We stayed there in silence, me lying down while she sat there looking forlorn.

“Are you going to call Cameron?” I asked and she tensed up.

Why didn't she want to tell me what was going on with them? Had he cheated on her?

Was she worried I'd pick sides? My loyalty always lied with her over Cameroon no matter what the situation at least if she wasn't at fault.

I wasn't one of those who supported their friends blindly and neither was Zane.

We loved eachother to bits but we never supported disgusting attitudes or bad behaviours.

We knew when to call each other out when either one of us screwed up.

Perhaps she was the one at fault and she didn't want me judging her.

“Hey, you know you can tell me anything right?” I said and she nodded absentmindedly, the look in her eyes distant.

I sighed but didn't push further notice wanting to force it out of her before she was ready.

Besides, what right did I have to demand honesty from her when I was keeping something as big as finding my mate away from her?

I turned on my side and faced the wall as tears welled up in my eyes. Everything that happened from here on out would be a constant reminder that I couldn't be with my mate.

The door of the room burst open shortly after and Cameron walked in looking worried.

“Hey, what are you doing here?” I asked staring between the two of them.

Zane was doing her best to avoid his gaze but it was obvious there was a bit of tension between them.

“Zane called me. How are you feeling?”

Zane stood up and walked away from the bed putting some between them and I huffed.

I couldn't stand the pretense and distance any longer.

“What's wrong with you two? I'm not blind so before either of you think of lying to me, remember that I have a pair of working eyes and an intuition that's saying something isn't quite right.”

“We broke up,” Zane said at the same time Cameron said, “We're fine,”

Kayden’s povI got out of my room and walked through the hallways as the morning sun slanted through the hallways windows.Just when I got to the dinner table, I saw Jamie sitting at the table by herself. She was eating there with her two friends as they seemed to be playing with their foods.“Hey,” I said to her.She glanced up, milk spilling out the side of her mouth. “Morning.” Her voice was garbled. She reached for her sleeve and wiped.I leaned against the chair. “Where’s Mira?”“Uh… no idea. Haven’t seen her since yesterday.”"Not at all?""Nope." She popped the 'p' and glanced at her friends who just kept staring into their bowls. Something in her voice bugged me. Mira wasn’t one to disappear without a word, even if it was just a door slam or some pissy muttering on her way out. This silence was not normal.I wanted to ask for more details when I heard someone behind me.“Kayden!”I turned to see one of the warriors from alpha freya’s pack coming close to me.He was a big man,

Mira’s povHe smirked. “Not my kind of scene.” His eyes flicked back to me. “Be safe.”There was a pause… just a second too long and then I nodded without saying anything.“We will. Let’s go before the driver leaves without us.”As we went to the door, Kim giggled about how cute Kayden was but I ignored that.We made for the door, the horn sounding again. As we stepped outside, I couldn’t get the feeling out of my mind that Kayden was watching us from the window in the hallway.I refused to look back as we got into the car and the driver drove us to where we needed to go.In the car only Kim and Zane talked while also singing to the songs on the radio. They tried to coerce me into joining them but my mind was filled with the pain of what I was going through. Yeah, I couldn’t think of anything but where I was going to get out a hundred thousand dollars to pay the strange person.Soon we got to the venue and we got out.Zane came to stand before Kim and I as she looked at our dressing.

Mira’s povMy mouth went dry. I threw the phone on my mattress and walked in a tight, dizzy little circle, trying to breathe. The window was open just a bit and the freezing air came over me but it wasn’t enough air.I had to keep telling myself, it’s nothing. It’s nothing. That if I ignore it, it would go away. But who was I kidding. For months now I had been blackmailed and now it was just too apparent that this person would not stop until they destroyed me.At that moment, my phone rang.I literally jumped. My heart almost punched through my ribs. The same unknown number.I didn’t want to pick up. I really, really didn’t. But my thumb moved before I could stop it.I picked up the phone. “Hello?”Nothing at first, just a low static buzz, like at the end of a record. Then I heard a voice—or something like one.It wasn’t male. It wasn’t female. It was… wrong. Flat. Robotic.Like one of those creepy voice changers you see in movies.“Till sunrise,” it said. “Just pay the money… or you

Mira’s povThe next day felt… heavy. Almost like I had a lot of weight pressing me down.Hadn’t even slept well after all those messages. The text was still sitting there on my phone, glowing in my mind even when the screen was black.I was in Zane’s room, sitting cross-legged on her worn-out gray couch, pretending to listen while she and Kim complained about how they’d gotten chewed out by their parents for coming home late.“I swear, my mom nearly ripped the door off when I got home,” Zane said, falling back against the cushions like the memory alone was exhausting her. “She had that look—you know the one—like she was gonna give me the whole ‘I’m not mad, just disappointed’ speech, but nope. Straight to yelling.”I smirked weakly even when my mind wasn’t even there.“Oh and my dad,” she continued. “My dad wasn’t even happy. He just yelled as well. So yeah. Double yelling. Ten out of ten would not recommend it.”Kim laughed, but there was no real joy in it. She was sitting on the fl

Mira’s povI could feel his hand around my wrist before I’d even fully stepped past the dining table.“Let go of me,” I said, not wanting to bring attention to us.But Kayden being Kayden refused to do that.He looked around and saw no one was looking as he got even closer to me. “They’re not here.” He finally spoke again when he must have realized I wasn’t going to make a dash for it despite having had plenty of time already.I looked at him. “I don’t care. I don’t have to be here with you.”“I need to know now,” he said, voice high and panicked. “Where were you tonight?”I almost laughed, if only there were anything remotely amusing about his expression. “I went to a party.”“You were too seductive for that.”I scoffed, pulling my arm free. “Too seductive? Seriously? What are you, the fashion police of bad excuses? And it’s none of your business.”“What do you mean it’s none of my business. You’re my…”“I’m nothing to you,” I growled at him. I then turned and started walking away

Mira’s pov“Good evening,” was all I could say as I walked towards them.My stepfather looked up from the head of the table—Alpha posture, shoulders straight, jaw set. “Mira,” he said, as if my name were a greeting and an order to get in my seat already. My mother flashed me a smile.“I…” I waved vaguely toward the hallways. They knew where I’d been. they didn’t want me late anyway. I slipped into the chair beside Kayden directly across from Jamie and wished instantly that I’d chosen someplace elseKayden was chewing slowly, eyes flicking at me like I’d interrupted his peaceful dinner. Jamie smirked, not that I could tell who she meant it for – me or just her face. Either way, I didn’t look at her and concentrated on dishing soup into my own bowl.“So,” my mother began cutting through the quiet clinking of silver on porcelain. “How are things with your new friend?”I looked up, halfway through the act of bringing a spoonful of cereal to my mouth. “Kim? Oh, um. She’s,” I shrugged best
