EARLIER..

Kaliyah stirred in the soft sheets, a faint sigh slipping from her lips as her eyes fluttered open. For a second, her brain clung to sleep, unsure of where she was.

Then she sat up.

This... wasn’t her cramped, creaky room back at Kate’s. The bed beneath her was soft, the air smelled faintly of pine, her green eyes scanned the dim room.

It was so quiet, too quiet.

Levi!

He wasn't there.

She remembered now, she fell asleep in the car, he must have brought her here.

But where was he?

Levi slowly lifted his head from her lap and turned to face her, his gaze locking onto hers with a hint of a smirk. Then, he pointed to his lips.“Here.”Kaliyah’s mouth parted slightly. Her eyes widened just a little. This man was unbelievable, and he made her heart race like nothing else. Her lips twitched. “Do you… want me to scratch it?”His smile deepened, lazy and charming. “Yes,” he said, leaning in a bit closer. “With your lips.”He was so close now, close enough that she could feel the soft warmth of his breath caressing her skin, she could see every speck of blue in his intense eyes. Her breath caught in her throat, suddenly feeling heat spread through her body. She didn’t even know when she became like this, when she started wanting to melt under his touch, wanting to…Kiss him.Levi leaned in even closer. Their lips were barely a whisper apart now. Her heart thudded against her ribs, as though it was trying to escape her chest and run straight into him.“Kaliyah,” he murmu

Her hand moved to his cheek, and he leaned into her touch.“I am,” he admitted. His voice was quiet, but the weight in it was unmistakable. “I’m not going to rest until I find out who did this. And when I do…” His jaw tensed. “They’ll pay.”But before he could say more, Kaliyah leaned forward and wrapped her arms around him.He froze for half a second as he was caught off guard.“I know you will,” she whispered against his shoulder. “But stop being so upset. I don’t like it when you get mad.”Her hand slid into his hair, stroking it gently, as if taming both the man and the beast beneath.A faint smirk curled at the corner of Levi’s lips. His mate… was calming him, trying to soothe him.And it was working, he felt his wolf stir in contentment under her touch, quieted by her presence. When she finally pulled back, she gently cupped his face in her palms and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead.Levi’s eyes widened slightly. He hadn’t expected that, and for a second, he just stared at he

‘Bring some food up for Kaliyah. Now.’‘Yes, Alpha.’ came her immediate response, and he cut the link.He continued holding Kaliyah. But his blood boiled underneath his calm exterior.Inside the packhouse, someone had done this. Someone was fully aware that she was the Alpha's mate, and yet still pulled such a stunt. He clenched his jaw tighter, keeping the rage under the surface as his hands gently stroked her back, and his lips pressed against her forehead.A few minutes later, a soft knock came at the door. Felicia entered carefully, carrying a tray of warm food. She placed it on the table beside the bed.Levi looked at Kaliyah gently. “It’s time to eat, my love. You need something in your stomach.”She nodded slowly, tucking her hair behind her ears. He rose up, wiping the last of her tears with his thumb.“Don’t cry anymore, okay? I’ll be back in a bit. I just need to check on a few things.”She nodded again. Before leaving, Levi turned to Felicia. “Make sure she eats something.”

He turned sharply and called out to the two guards nearby. “Has the Luna left the packhouse at all this morning?”Both guards shook their heads. “No, Alpha. We’ve been here all morning. No one left.”“Good. Get two more men and start searching every inch of the packhouse. Now!”“Yes, Alpha,” they said before quickly taking off in opposite directions.Levi turned a corner, the tension in his chest thickening. But then he heard a scream, a faint, muffled scream. It was his mate!He stilled. His heart jolted. “...Mate,” he whispered.Ray and Oliver looked at him. “What did you say?” Oliver asked.“I heard her,” Levi said again, louder this time. And then he abruptly moved fast, toward the sound, following the invisible string tugging at his core.He reached a door, and behind it he heard her cries and the thud of her fist against the door.Levi’s heart clenched. He gripped the knob and tried to turn it, but it was locked.“Kaliyah!” he called out, his voice filled with urgency.Inside,

The voice replied in a calm tone. “Yes, I do. This way.”Her eyes lingered on the figure for a bit too long. There was something strange about him. But in her heart, all she wanted was to find Levi. So she followed. The figure led her quietly through another corridor, one she hadn’t taken often before stopping at a plain wooden door.“He came back very late last night,” the figure said. “Around midnight, I think. He’s inside. You should go see him.”Kaliyah nodded slowly. “Thank you,” she said, though she was still trying to place who this person was. She didn’t remember ever seeing someone like that around the packhouse, and certainly not in a cloak. She walked up to the door, slowly turned the knob, and stepped inside. The room was dimly lit by a narrow window. She looked around and discovered it was empty. There was a desk. Two burlap sacks lying in the corner. The space was barely furnished. Dust clung to the corners of the room. “Maybe he made a mistake,” she whispered to hersel

She stirred slightly, and then opened her eyes to see Oliver standing beside her. “It’s past 9 p.m. already,” he said softly, “You should go upstairs and rest.” Kaliyah blinked a few times, the fog of sleep still clearing from her eyes. She sat up slowly and looked around, noticing the dark sky outside the window. The house was dim now, most of the lights switched off. Her brows furrowed. “Is Levi back yet?” Oliver hesitated. She turned her gaze to him more intently now. He scratched the back of his head and gave a faint smile, the kind that didn't reach his eyes. “No… he’s not back yet.” Her expression shifted, her lips pressing into a thin line as a quiet worry passed through her eyes. Oliver noticed and gave a small chuckle, trying to ease her concern. “Hey, don’t worry. Maybe he’s just… caught up with something. He’ll be back soon.” She looked at him deeply. And then, softly, she said, “Don’t lie to me.” Oliver’s smile faded. He looked away slightly, letting out

The moment Sebastian got close enough, his cold gaze landed on the girl Levi held protectively at his side. Levi ran his fingers through her hair, brushing it off her face with care.“If you're not comfortable answering,” he said softly, “you don’t have to say anything, at least not right away.”Kaliyah nodded slowly. Then Levi asked quietly, “Who was the woman you bumped into when you left the forest?”
