The noon sun hung high over the Central Quadrangle, casting sharp, unforgiving shadows across the polished flagstones.
By mid-day, the open-air courtyard of Apex Academy was always swarming with activity. Nobles from every major territory gathered in high-born circles around the marble fountains, their laughter ringing out under the warm mountain breeze. The air was thick with the scent of rich perfumes, expensive leather, and roasted meats from the upper dining halls.
And right in the center of it all, carrying a silver washbasin brimming with ice water and fresh linen towels, was me.
My feet ached inside my thin, worn boots. The line across my cheek where Morrigan’s ring had cut me yesterday was still hot and inflamed, throbbing beneath the heavy layer of wolf-bane salve I had reapplied before dawn. The heavy steel obedience collar around my throat felt tighter than usual, absorbing the dry heat of the afternoon sun and pressing painfully against my trachea.
Keep your head down. Five steps to the bench, set the basin down, walk away.
"Sera!"
The shrill voice cut through the hum of the courtyard like a glass blade.
I stopped instantly, my boots halting two feet from the marble bench where Morrigan sat surrounded by her entourage. She was dressed in an elaborate emerald-green riding gown, her dark hair pinned back with jeweled combs that glinted in the sunlight. Beside her sat two daughters of high-ranking northern Alphas, preening like peahens as they watched the crowd.
"Yes, Lady Morrigan?" I kept my voice low, flat, and devoid of any human warmth, keeping my eyes locked onto the front hem of her velvet skirt.
"Look at this napkin," Morrigan snapped, picking up a folded linen towel from the silver tray I had set down a moment prior. She held it out between two manicured fingers, her face twisted in theatrical disgust. "It’s lukewarm. I asked for mountain-glacier ice water to cool my face after weapons practice. Are you completely incompetent, or are you deliberately trying to embarrass me in front of the court?"
"The ice was pulled from the subterranean cellar ten minutes ago, Lady Morrigan," I murmured quietly, keeping my head bowed. "The midday sun…"
SLAP.
The crack of her palm against my face rang across the stone courtyard like a gunshot.
The sheer violence of the blow snapped my head sharply to the left. The silver washbasin slipped from my numb fingers, crashing onto the marble flagstones with a deafening CLANG. Ice water, silver cups, and fresh linens scattered across the stone, splashing over the pristine hem of Morrigan’s emerald dress and soaking her polished leather boots.
A collective gasp rippled through the surrounding crowd of students. Conversations died instantly. Dozens of eyes turned toward us, eager to watch the spectacle of a noble putting her domestic stray in her place.
"You dirty, clumsy freak!" Morrigan shrieked, jumping up from the marble bench as the cold water seeped into her gown. Her face flushed a dark, angry crimson. "Look what you did to my dress! This silk was imported from the Eastern Capital!"
"I am sorry, Lady Morrigan…"
SLAP.
She struck me again, this time with the back of her hand. The heavy sapphire ring on her index finger caught the raw cut on my left cheek, tearing the fresh scab wide open. Blood, bright and metallic, welled up instantly, trickling down my jawline and dripping onto the collar of my grey wool tunic.
My vision flashed white for a fraction of a second. Deep beneath my ribs, behind the heavy iron lock of my steel collar, the silver flame of my Moon-Gazer wolf roared to life with a feral, agonizing fury.
Rip her throat out, the silver beast whispered in the dark corners of my mind. Tear her flesh to ribbons. Break her bones against the marble.
I bit the inside of my lip until I tasted my own blood, squeezing my hands into tight fists behind my back. My nails cut deep into my palms, using the physical pain to anchor my surging aura. The steel obedience collar around my throat grew searingly hot, absorbing the violent wave of silver energy trying to break through my skin.
Hold it in. Do not shift. Do not react.
Morrigan reached down, her fingers tangling painfully into the hair at the back of my head. She yanked my head back, forcing my face up toward the harsh sunlight so everyone in the courtyard could see the blood running down my jaw.
"You’re going to drop to your knees and lick this water off my boots, Sera," Morrigan hissed into my face, her wolf scent souring with malicious delight. "Right now. Or I swear to the Goddess, I will have father lock you in the iron maiden tonight."
Laughter broke out among the surrounding noble students.
"Lick it, stray!" a male voice yelled from the crowd.
"Show us what a rankless wolf is good for!" another chimed in.
I stared up at Morrigan, my silver eyes hidden beneath the shadow of my dark lashes. My jaw was locked so tight my teeth threatened to crack. I felt the silver pressure building in my throat, reaching a critical mass where my suppressed aura would shatter the steel collar into a thousand pieces…
"Release her."
The words weren't shouted. They didn't need to be.
The voice was a wall of absolute, crushing ice. It cut through the taunts of the crowd with the heavy, undeniable authority of an executioner's blade.
The entire courtyard went dead silent. The laughter evaporated instantly.
The crowd of students parted like the sea before a storm as Aurelius Sterling-Cross strode into the open quadrangle.
He was fully clad in his pristine obsidian-and-gold royal tunic, his broad shoulders squared, his tall frame radiating a pressure so dense it felt like the sky itself had descended onto the stone floor. His striking golden eyes were locked onto Morrigan’s hand, specifically, onto the way her fingers were yanked tightly into my hair.
Morrigan’s posture froze. Her cruel grin vanished, replaced by a quick, nervous flutter of her eyelashes as she straightened her back.
"Lord Aurelius!" Morrigan said instantly, forcing a bright, elegant smile onto her face while keeping her grip tight in my hair. "Forgive the disruption. My family’s servant was simply being disciplined for gross negligence. She ruined my imported dress."
Aurelius didn't look at Morrigan’s face. He didn't look at her imported dress, nor did he look at the noble girls standing behind her.
He walked forward with slow, deliberate steps, stopping precisely one foot away from us. The temperature in the immediate vicinity plummeted instantly. The warm afternoon draft turned biting cold, condensation forming on the edges of the marble fountain behind them.
"I said," Aurelius repeated, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying hum that vibrated the stones beneath our feet, "release her."
Morrigan’s smile faltered. A flicker of real fear flashed in her dark eyes. "My Lord... she is my father's property. The Vanehart pack has full authority to discipline domestic staff…"
Aurelius took one step closer.
He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't even lift a hand. He simply released a fraction of his Central Alpha aura, a wave of raw, golden pressure that slammed into Morrigan like a physical sledgehammer.
Morrigan gasped, her breath catching violently in her throat. Her knees buckled slightly under the sudden weight of his command, and her hand instinctively flew open, releasing her grip on my hair.
"Step back, Lady Morrigan," Aurelius commanded softly, his golden eyes blazing with an unholy light.
Morrigan didn't argue. Terrified by the raw, predatory dominance radiating off the Central Prince, she stumbled backward two full steps, her manicured hands trembling against her velvet skirt.
The crowd held its breath, expecting Aurelius to dismiss the scene, to order the guards to clear the mess, or to walk away as he usually did when lower-tier drama unfolded.
He did none of those things.
Instead of turning to leave, Aurelius stepped directly into the space Morrigan had just vacated.
He stepped so close that his leather combat boots bumped against the toes of my worn shoes. His massive, imposing shadow blotted out the midday sun entirely, swallowing me in a wall of dark amber, rain, and suffocating physical presence.
He was standing far too close for a prince. Far too close for a noble. He had stepped deep inside the invisible boundary of personal space that usually separated high-born wolves from servants.
I kept my chin tucked low, my breath hitching as the overwhelming scent of dark amber and rain filled my lungs once more. My pulse, already erratic from Morrigan's assault, spiked into a frantic, hammering rhythm against my collarbone.
"Look at me," Aurelius whispered.
His voice wasn't a roar meant for the crowd. It was a low, velvet demand meant strictly for my ears.
I didn't move. I kept my gaze pinned to the gold embroidery on his tunic chest, fighting with every fiber of my being to keep my Moon-Gazer wolf buried beneath my skin.
Aurelius raised his hand.
The surrounding crowd watched in stunned, total silence as the Cold Prince, the male who never touched anyone without wearing combat gloves, the male who treated every female in the academy with icy indifference, slowly extended two bare fingers toward my face.
He didn't touch my lips. He didn't stroke my hair.
He placed his fingertips directly against the side of my jaw, right below the fresh cut where my blood was dripping down my neck.
SNAP.
The moment his skin touched my blood-stained flesh, the air between us crackled with another sharp, invisible shockwave of static heat.
I gasped softly, my head snapping up by reflex.
My eyes locked straight into his. Aurelius’s golden irises were blown out wide, the dark pupils dilated until they swallowed almost all the color, glowing like molten gold under the afternoon sun. He took a heavy, sharp breath, drinking in the sudden flare of heat that surged between our bodies.
"You bleed too easily, Sera," Aurelius murmured, his voice low, dark, and utterly possessive.
His fingers didn't pull away from my jaw. Instead, his thumb moved slowly, deliberately wiping a line of fresh blood away from my cheek. He pressed his thumb against my skin with just enough force to feel the frantic, high-pressure pulse hammering beneath my jawline.
He was testing me. In front of the entire academy, in front of Morrigan, he was deliberately invading my space to measure my reaction.
He could feel the feverish heat radiating off my neck. He could feel the way my pulse wasn't flickering like a terrified rabbit’s, but pounding with the heavy, dense cadence of a caged predator fighting to break its bars.
Behind him, Morrigan’s face had gone completely pale. Her mouth hung open in absolute disbelief, her eyes darting between Aurelius’s hand on my cheek and the intimate, suffocating proximity of our bodies.
"Lord... Lord Aurelius?" Morrigan stammered, her voice shaking with a mix of fury and confusion. "What... what are you doing with her?"
Aurelius didn't even turn his head. He didn't give Morrigan a single second of his attention. His golden eyes remained pinned to mine, tracking the sharp intake of my breath, reading every micro-expression on my face.
"She spilled your water, Lady Morrigan," Aurelius said, his voice carrying smoothly across the quiet quadrangle, though his gaze never left my eyes. "Which means she is now assigned to clean the lower weapons hall for the rest of the afternoon. Under my direct supervision."
"What?" Morrigan gasped. "She is my servant…"
"She is a servant of Apex Academy," Aurelius cut in coldly, his thumb pressing slightly firmer into the pulse point on my neck, sending another wave of intoxicating heat rushing through my veins. "And until the Combat Trials begin, her duties are subject to the command of the Triad."
He lowered his hand from my face, though he didn't step back an inch. He leaned down, his lips hovering barely an inch from the shell of my ear, his dark amber scent wrapping around me like a heavy velvet cloak.
"Pick up your tray, Sera," he whispered, his breath hot against my flushed skin. "And walk ahead of me."
I swallowed hard, my throat raw, my skin burning where his thumb had wiped away my blood.
Without a word, I dropped to one knee, gathered the fallen silver cups and soaking towels, and loaded them back onto the brass tray. My hands were shaking, not from fear of the crowd, but from the terrifying, undeniable truth that was becoming clearer with every passing hour:
Aurelius hadn't stepped in to save me from Morrigan’s hand. He had stepped in because he couldn't stand another person touching what his wolf was beginning to claim as his.
I pushed myself off the marble floor, held the brass tray tightly against my chest, and turned toward the dark archway of the lower halls.
Behind me, the heavy, measured footsteps of the Cold Prince followed precisely two inches back, his crushing, icy aura wrapping around me like an inescapable chain.
