Beta Maverick did not return from the Alpha's quarters until about two hours later. I had finished making lunch, eaten to my fill and after waiting for the Beta for over an hour, I went to my room. The big pot filled with herbs was steaming on the fire, the Beta's lunch was ready, and only needed to be heated when he returned so I climbed into my bed for a quick nap. For a long time, sleep did not come, and just when I eventually began to feel sleepy, the Beta returned, and as it was his usual routine, he began to scream my name from the spot which marked the beginning of his quarters. "Avira!" Beta Maverick called the third time, and I made a growling sound, although it was low because the Beta's voice sounded from right outside my window now, and I couldn't dare let him hear me growl. I rolled out of bed rather reluctantly, and staggered towards the door, wishing I could be allowed to take a nap without any disturbance. My destination was the kitchen, to fetch from the steaming pot of herbs. It was pointless going to the Beta first when I knew what he wanted at the moment. It was past five in the evening, and Beta Maverick was yet to have lunch or his herbs. The other members may be too scared to admit it but the Alpha Demian was a no good dictator. He could have sent the Beta back to his quarters earlier than he did since the Beta was without food but as expected, he didn't, instead the meeting had lasted for an hour more than it was supposed to last for. I fetched herb water from the steaming pot and headed for Beta Maverick whom I was sure would be sitting on his rocking chair by now. From the distance, I saw him on the rocking chair, lost in thoughts. My guess was right after all. I approached him with caution so as not to startle him. I was feeling too good to do anything stupid that would earn me a good whip. Besides if the stranger was right about feeling my pain, I didn't want him feeling sympathetic towards me. The Beta rose up so suddenly as I got close to him, startling me so much that I lost grip of the cup which I held, causing it to drop from my hands to the ground. Slowly, I looked from the cup which luckily did not break, to the Beta, and when our eyes met, his was fiery, filled with anger and hate. My wolf whimpered inside me in fear. I know that face. This can't be good. "I brought you the herb water." I said in a shaky voice, hoping that would calm him even though I didn't think it would. Worse still, the herb water had poured. "And you had to stupidly startle me, and made a waste and a mess." Beta Maverick stated, his eyes flashed angrily at me. I wanted to answer in the negative because I didn't startle him but I knew better than making a single sound in defense of an accusation whether I was wrongly accused or not. Beta Maverick headed inside, and I knew what was coming, and braced up for it. He soon came out, bearing a whip, but not the one with thorns, I noted with relief. "Strip," he commanded when he came to me, and I stepped out of my clothes till I was left with nothing on me. Once he lifted the whip, I tightened my muscles, clenched my teeth, and shut my eyes, waiting for the pain which I knew was coming. All my effort to avoid getting whipped had only got me to this, and now if the stranger's words were true, he would look at me with too much pity come tomorrow night. But there was no impact, Beta Maverick did not lower the whip, and I was afraid of releasing my muscles and letting go of my teeth which were clenched. Slowly I opened my eyes when I began to hear retreating footsteps. He was heading back inside with the whip in his hand. My jaw dropped! He sure didn't change his mind about getting me whipped, only with what. As I expected, he came back with a different whip, one with thorns and my wolf whimpered inside me in fear. She was not alone. I too was just as scared of the pain that was coming, and most especially of my inability to heal quickly. My healing ability could only be used once a day, and the ache in my stomach had been cured already with it, now I'll have to suffer till when my healing ability returned tomorrow. "You were lucky this morning," Beta Maverick said, brandishing the whip before me. "But you won't be so lucky now." He added, raising the whip above his shoulders. I trembled violently just as my wolf whimpered in the most pitiful way I have heard her whimper in a long while. Clenching my teeth or tightening my muscles wouldn't do any good this time but I did them anyways. Whatever would minimize the effect of the pain. "Argghh!" I screamed once the whip landed on my bare back, and curled around me. Mercilessly, Beta Maverick pulled at it with force, and I could hear and feel my skin come off with the thorns on the whip. There was no way I could have stopped myself from screaming, not with a pain so great. But Beta Maverick wasn't done. He raised the whip above his shoulders once more, and lowered it with the same amount of force. It landed on my right shoulder this time while the end of the whip clung to the lower part of my left shoulder. I tightened my eyes even more when the Beta again pulled the whip roughly off my skin. I did not scream this time, I was in too much pain to scream. Tears only flowed nonstop from my eyes. Hot, painful tears. I had released my hold on my muscles and teeth since the first whip was delivered, and I couldn't tell if there was any difference between the first hit and the second. I waited for the next hit with my eyes close but it wasn't forth coming. I waited, and waited, afraid to open my eyes for fear of what I might see. When I eventually opened my eyes some long minutes later, the Beta was gone, and so was the whip. I laid on the ground, panting heavily in pain. I couldn't see my back but my right shoulder was wounded and there were droplets of blood from the wound down to the ground.[Avira]Everything happened in a flash. Declan grabbing me roughly by my arm, and questioning me really quickly. If I didn't know him well, I would have thought he had broken into a panic. But he was Declan. He never panicked, and if he did, it wouldn't be because of me. He left just then, after telling me to stay here, like there was some place else I could be.Now left alone with the food scattered on the floor, and the dead ants around it, I let out a deep fearful sigh. Although I was attacked a few days ago, and I was scared, this was a much more direct and deadly attempt to terminate my life. But why?I mean, what offence did I commit, and to whom? I couldn't stop thinking of what would have happened if Declan had not gotten me really angry enough to crash both the table, and the dishes on it. I couldn't stop thinking about what would have happened if I had taken a bite.I slowly eased onto the bed when I felt my knees grow weak, but I could not for the life of me stop looking
[Declan]I watched as Avira stormed off into Dylan's bathroom, after crashing the table and the food she was supposed to eat. The first time I saw her, I knew she would be a hard one but never did I envision that she would have so much temper. For days, I have tried to apologize, and it was all to no avail as Avira would not even listen to me, or say anything else. She was right to not forgive me easily or ever but I wouldn't give up asking, or even stop trying.I waited a long time for her with my eyes fixed on the bathroom door which was shut. She must hate me, I thought in my head. I deserve it, and even more, I added, and heaved heavily. The possibility that she might never forgive me laid heavily on my chest, and made me feel nothing but dread. With each passing day, my feelings for her increased, and all I wanted was to bond with her. But she wouldn't hear of it. Although she hadn't said anything to me, I knew how irritated and angry my very presence made her feel. I saw how
[Avira] For days, I watched Dylan go out with the sole aim of finding out who my attackers were, and watched him come back in after many hours with utter disappointment. It was not a pleasant sight, but I was touched that he did all that because of me. He had refuted my initial assumption that he had a lover somewhere in the pack that hated the fact that we shared a room. Of course I did not ask him that, I could not, as that would come too close to jealousy, and even though it was the case with me, I didn't want him or anyone finding out about it. I wouldn't even admit it to myself. Dylan also refused that I moved out of his room, back to the room right across the hall, or to any other room. According to him, the room was a mess, and had housed Thorne for too many days. Also it would be a constant reminder of my struggle against Thorne. As for moving out, he believes, and made me believe that I would be much safer while I'
[Dylan]I sent for Declan at once, and without thinking. The meeting we just concluded with our father was to strengthen our twin bond. At Declan's arrogant insistence, our father had agreed that Avira stayed in the pack, on the condition that Avira does not come between us.Declan followed me from behind without questions, and we headed back to my bedroom, where Avira laid on the bed, beaten. His special smelling ability would be useful now. I told myself as I pushed the door open. Avira was on the bed, just as she was when I left her a few minutes ago. Her eyes became angry when she saw Declan walk in, but I could not help it."Tell me, who else was in this room in the last hour?" I asked, when both Declan's eyes and Avira's held and met. Although the condition for Avira to remain in the pack was that Declan and I live at peace with each other, I still did not feel comfortable knowing how he felt about her."I can't," Declan
[Avira]I remained on the bed after my attackers left. I know I should put on the lights to cast out the darkness but I did not, instead I remained on the bed, lost in my thoughts.Who could it be that wanted me dead? Haven't I had enough in this pack already? I stretched out my hand and reached for the bedside table. I tapped my way around it until I found a napkin with which I wiped my mouth. What if it was Dylan's lover who sent the men that attacked me. Surely, there must be someone in the pack who is head over heels in love with Dylan, and that someone, however she tried to act otherwise, did not like that I now shared a room with him.Since that was the case, I'd return to the room across from Dylan's. I'd be safe there since Dylan is back, and I was out of his bedroom, even though it was not a guarantee.I remained on the bed, and thought of other possibilities, but none of them made any sense to me more than that it was
[Avira]Dylan was charging towards Declan when I woke up, but I wasn't sure if it was real, or if I was back in the moon realm."What's going on?" I asked. I wanted to be sure I was awake for real.Dylan stopped in his tracks, and came to me. His excitement was the first proof that this was really happening, and not a vision in the moon realm. Declan remained rooted to the spot where he stood, and even though I itched to, I avoided looking at his direction altogether. Whatever happened to me was his doing, and whatever he was doing here will not make any difference. He left after some time, and I heaved a silent sigh. His presence didn't make me feel any comfortable. I inquired about him from Dylan a few seconds after he left."It's Declan." Dylan said even though I knew that already."What was he doing here?" I asked. "I think we found who our mystery man is," he said instead, but I was not interested in that conversation. I knew who sent me flowers, and I remember telling him alre
[Avira]I walked out on Declan without answering his question, and I did not return to the room until it was late in the night, when I was sure he had left. Three counts in a roll but that was three days ago, and I have not heard or seen him since, until now when he asked Nanisca to summon me.I sh
[Declan]In my anger, I headed for my bedroom but stopped by the door of the guest room where Avira was staying. A sudden thought had just occurred to me to lock up the room, and without stopping to rethink, I twisted the key on the door, pulled it out, and then I left for my room qwith the key. P
[Declan]I dragged myself down the hallway, and back into my bedroom a few minutes after Dylan left with Avira. Even before I tried to get some sleep, I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight. Not when my heart was this heavy, with beautiful images of Avira displayed all over my head, filling me
[Avira]I slowly got down on the floor, mustering every ounce of self control I had to not cry out in pain. Every part of my body was covered in sores, all thanks to Declan's merciless whips, and Nanisca who had lied against me. He had asked me to go after whipping me to his satisfaction, and I kne
