22. Alive

Giovanni:

My eyes remained on her face, watching her like a hawk while she slept, looking so peaceful. It had been a shock to see her at my doorstep after so many months of not having her in my life. At a point, I’d considered she was dead and I blamed myself every day for being responsible for that, telling myself if I hadn’t bitten her when I’d panicked, she might have still been alive. But now, she was here in my bed and I felt as though my heart just started working after five months.

I tucked a stray hair behind her ear and leaned down to kiss her forehead before rising from my seat beside her, on the bed. Stripping off the sweats pants I’d quickly pulled on when she’d announced her arrival, I walked into the bathroom, a happy smile stretching me lips_something I hadn’t known in a while.
