Chapter 8

Author: Wendy Gill
Dad immediately rushed up to grab Thomas.

"Marcus was your brother!" Carol roared angrily. "He nearly died in the alley behind the bar because of you! And yet, you're still calling him names!"

Thomas struggled away from Dad and screamed at the top of his lungs, "He deserved it! He deserved everything for trying to steal all I had from me! The spot belongs to me! You also belong to me!"

Carol suddenly laughed. Yet, her smile never reached her eyes. Instead, it was sharp and cold.

"Thomas Shaffer," she said, her voice light and nonchalant despite the gravity of the situation. "Listen carefully. I, Carol Lockhart, have never belonged to you.

"And your brother, Marcus Shaffer, has never said a single bad thing about you until his death."

She lifted her hand and threw the diary in Thomas' face. The pages fell open as the book fluttered to the ground, landing exactly on a page that read, "Carol, I hope that you and Thomas will spend the rest of your lives happily together. Please be ha

The nurse continued, "Last week, some stray bullets found their way into the refugee camp area, and he immediately threw himself in front of the children to protect them with his life. "Several bullets nicked him in the back, and he had to have 12 stitches because of that. And yet, he still went back to work the next day like nothing happened to him."Carol could feel her heart squeezing in pain."Did he… Did he ever say why he came here?" she asked quietly. The nurse sighed and said, "He said that the living needed to be treated, and the dead needed to be remembered. He's in charge of recording the details of everybody we come across. He said that their bodies were merely a vessel for their poor, dead souls to reach heaven."Just then, there was a loud explosion nearby, followed by the sound of frequent gunshots and whizzing bullets."The enemies are attacking! Find cover!"The refugee camp was thrown into chaos. Carol saw me rushing out of a tent with a child in my arms while

However, none of the bodies belonged to me."Ms. Lockhart, it's time for you to go back. It's dangerous here," the rescue team personnel said again.Carol didn't say anything in return. She took out a photograph from her bag and looked at it.It was the photo of a 20-year-old me under the cherry blossom trees, my eyes as gentle as ever."I will find him," she said. "Dead or alive, I will find him."…Evenings arrived quickly in the war-torn area. The skies would be dyed a blood-red color because of all the settling dust. Faint sounds of random gunshots could be heard from yonder, reminding everyone about the dangers and cruelty of this place.Carol stood at the refugee camp base and stared off into the horizon, looking at the graying skies. It had been three months, and she still couldn't find any traces of me."Ms. Lockhart! We need help in tent number three!" A nurse ran out and called to her.Carol quickly gathered her thoughts and hurried into the nearby medical tent.Fo

The stinging smell of disinfectant invaded Carol's senses. When she opened her eyes again, she realized that she was lying in a hospital bed. Her right leg was in a cast, and she also had a bandage wrapped around her head. The TV in the room was showing news about the airplane disaster, Flight CE1316. The reporter said, "It has been regrettably confirmed that all 132 crew members and passengers have perished. Rescue efforts were forcefully halted due to an order from the war zones—""Turn that off!" Carol screamed, grabbing a mug and throwing it at the screen. The mug broke, and nurses hurried into the ward at once."Ms. Lockhart! You can't get out of bed yet!""He's waiting for me!" Carol screamed, trying her best to stand up but only ending up falling to the ground because of her broken leg.She then began tearing off the IV drip on the back of her hand, letting blood drip down her wrist and onto the floor."He's waiting for me…"Carol shook all over. Finally, realization da

I was waiting in the VIP lounge at the airport when a message flashed on the screen. It was the final confirmation letter of my deployment to a war-torn country."Dear Mr. Marcus Shaffer, according to the International Peacekeeping Forces Special Regulation, clause 17 of the Non-Disclosure Act, you have agreed to join the body disposal team's "Net Zero Action Plan"."Flight CE1316 will be involved in a staged flight disaster, and you will forever lose your citizenship in your home country. Do you agree to proceed?"I signed my name on the letter with so much determination that the pen tore through the paper."I agree."The small light above the boarding gate that led to Flight CE1315 flashed continuously. By the time I boarded the plane bound for the war-torn country, Carol and Thomas' wedding would have started. And by the time Carol said "I do" to Thomas, my name, along with my identity, and the aircraft's black box, would forever be buried at the bottom of the ocean. The

I didn't know when Carol had come in to visit me. She had even lent me her arm to sleep on as a pillow.I was shocked and looked at her in confusion.Did she lend me her arm as a pillow because I'd complained once that the hospital pillows were too hard?Carol pressed her lips into a thin line and carefully withdrew her cramping arm."The police called your family. I know about everything now. I'm sorry for misunderstanding you last night."I stared at her. Her arm was very stiff, and she couldn't even bend it at the elbow. I guess I'd been using her arm as a pillow for far too long.Carol was the first one to avert her gaze."As for the wedding flowers… We'll use champagne roses and everything you like. It'll be arranged accordingly during the wedding," she said.I was shocked. "Did you confirm this with the designer?""Thomas told me about it."Just then, my phone buzzed again, and it was from the wedding planner."Mr. Shaffer, we have contacted Mr. Thomas about the invita
