Quinn's POV

Rainwater dripped from my bangs and splashed across Landon Jarrett's profile picture, each drop making the image beneath it seem even larger.

Back when we first started dating, I’d deliberately picked a profile picture matching his so we’d have matching icons. Looking at it now, I couldn't believe how childish I'd been.

I opened our chat and asked him one last time.

[Can you change your profile picture?]

This time, his reply came almost immediately.

[Quinn Sterling, are you seriously still on this?]

[I've transferred out of state specifically to keep my distance. What else do you want me to do?]

Same old Landon. Somehow, he always managed to turn it around and make me the unreasonable one.

My best friend, Zoe Langford, had dated Landon.

I hadn't even known that until we'd already been together for six months. It had been awkward to find out, but I hadn't thought much of it at the time. Everyone had a past.

Then Zoe started finding her way into more and more of our plans.

"A friend gave me three movie tickets. We might as well invite Zoe instead of letting the extra one go to waste."

"You girls both like dessert, right? It's buy one, get one free, so we can grab one for Zoe too."

"What's so great about camping anyway? Doesn't Zoe like white-water rafting? The three of us can all fit in the same raft."

Even when I took Landon home to meet my parents, he insisted on bringing Zoe with us.

"What if your parents don't like me or don't think we're right for each other? At least Zoe can put in a good word for me."

In the end, my parents and I sat there waiting for two hours, and Landon never showed up.

Zoe had twisted her ankle on the way over, so he'd rushed her to the ER instead.

That was the moment I'd finally had enough and told him we were done. Landon didn't bother explaining himself. He simply sent me a copy of his transfer notice.

"Is this what it's going to take for you to finally believe me?!"

Then he moved more than six hundred miles away and gave me the cold shoulder for six months.

In the end, Zoe was the one who tricked him into coming back and arranged for us to see each other again. That was how we reconciled.

I'd actually thought he would change after that.

Now, I couldn't even bring myself to keep arguing with him. I tossed my phone aside and went to take a shower, and Landon didn't message me again either.

At two in the morning, my phone rang.

The moment I answered, Landon's irritated voice came through the speaker.

"Why aren't you answering my messages?"

That was when I noticed the dozen or so texts he'd sent me, all asking how I'd made that egg dish from last time.

The funny thing was, he'd complained that he didn't even like it when I made it, so I'd never bothered adding the recipe to the notebook.

My head was pounding, and I didn't have the energy to play along anymore.

"Zoe wants it, doesn't she?"

"How did you know..."

His voice trailed off abruptly.

A second later, he sent me a photo of the couch. A thin blanket lay rumpled across the cushions.

"Don't make it out to be something it's not. I'm sleeping out here at night. Nothing happened between us."

I narrowed my eyes at the picture.

The loveseat wasn't even five feet long. Landon was six-three. If he tried to sleep on that thing, half his legs would be hanging off the end.

I rolled onto my side, my throat so dry that my voice came out rough.

"Right. You drove more than ten hours just to pick her up from work, got out of bed in the middle of the night to make her a late-night snack, and you're so determined to stay at her place that you're willing to sleep on a couch you don't even fit on.

"You've already done everything but sleep with her. What else could you possibly do?"

Take off their clothes?

Going all the way?

What difference would that make?

"Quinn! What the hell is wrong with you —"

"I'll send you the recipe in a minute."

I cut off his angry outburst, my voice so calm it barely sounded like my own.

Silence settled over the call.

Landon clearly wasn't used to hearing me sound this detached, because when he spoke again, his tone had softened.

"You're not mad?"

I gave a faint, humorless smile.

"We're already broken up. Whatever you do has nothing to do with me anymore, so what would I even be mad about?"

He went silent for several seconds before his voice suddenly rose.

"What do you mean, we're broken up? Why are you talking like this again? When did I ever agree to that? Did I say we were done?"

Question after question came at me, but not a single one of them was an explanation.

For the past two months, I'd been staying at work until midnight almost every night, saving up as much time off as I could so I could go see him. Even my parents had noticed over video calls that I'd lost more than ten pounds and kept telling me how worried they were.

Landon, meanwhile, hadn't seemed to notice any of it. I was so speechless at his outburst I almost laughed.

"You're my boyfriend, but you're spending the middle of the night at another woman's apartment. Did you ask me if I was okay with that?"

Sunlight caught the diamond in Landon's hand, sending a sharp flash of light into my eyes.I'd waited so long for this ring from him. Now that he was finally offering it, it was too late.I reached down and picked it up, almost amused as I turned it over in my hand."SY's newest design. It's beautiful."I looked at him. "Zoe picked it out, didn't she?"Landon's gaze shifted away."I don't know much about jewelry, so I asked her for some advice."I nodded. It sounded exactly like the kind of excuse he would make."And the proposal? I'm guessing she pushed you into this too."His expression grew even more uncomfortable."...Yes."Then he hurried to add, "But I'm the one who genuinely wants to marry you now. This has nothing to do with Zoe."During the month Landon had been giving me the silent treatment, he'd taken Zoe around doing all the things they'd never gotten to do when they were younger, making up for all the reckless memories their relationship had missed. But after they'd spent

Quinn's POVWhen Mom called for me, Miles Zimmerman was still quietly asking if I wanted to try that new restaurant everyone had been talking about for dinner.I was smiling and about to answer when I noticed the strange look on Mom's face. She motioned for me to come over, looking both uncomfortable and faintly annoyed.Confused, I walked over and saw Landon standing there.I stopped short."What are you doing here?"Shouldn't he have been off somewhere with Zoe, enjoying whatever it was they insisted on calling "just friendship"?Landon grabbed my arm and pulled me outside, his expression tense."Who was that guy sitting next to you?"My elbow struck the doorframe, and I sucked in a sharp breath. Irritated, I yanked my arm free."My fiancé.""What?"Landon stared at me as if he couldn't believe what he'd heard."Quinn Sterling, being mad at me is one thing, but this is going way too far. How can you be this reckless?"You broke up with me because you were angry, fine. Then you quit y

Landon turned and walked out of the bar without another word.He had just opened his car door when Zoe came running after him in tears and wrapped her arms around him from behind."You went looking for Quinn, didn't you?"You... really fell in love with her?"Landon turned to face her and gently pulled her hands away."I don't know."When it came to Quinn, he'd never really stopped to ask himself whether he loved her. All these years, he'd simply accepted everything she did for him without thinking much about what he felt in return.Maybe he did love her.Otherwise, hearing her name now wouldn't leave that strange, prickling ache in his chest.Zoe stared at him, her cheeks still flushed from the alcohol. If this had been the Landon she knew before, he would have scoffed and said, "You're the one who kept pushing me to date her. What's all this talk about love? That's ridiculous."Instead, he said nothing.Zoe swayed slightly and had to brace herself against the wall."I'm sorry. I was

An hour later, Landon pulled up outside Quinn's office building and headed straight for the thirty-eighth floor. The receptionist recognized him immediately and teased, "Wow, I haven't seen you come pick Quinn up from work in forever."Landon's throat tightened. Come to think of it, it had been almost a year."Is she here?"That made the receptionist pause."I don't think I've seen her today."Then she spotted another woman passing by and called her over."Hey, you're in Quinn's department, right? I don't think she came in today. Have you seen her?"The woman frowned."You seriously don't know? She quit."Then she shook her head. "No idea what she was thinking. Probably had something to do with that long-distance boyfriend of hers again. She's hopeless when it comes to him."Landon's expression tightened."When did she quit?""About a month ago, I think. "She'd been working overtime for two straight months because she wanted to save up enough time off to go see her boyfriend. She stay

Landon froze where he stood. How had he not heard that Quinn had moved out? Whenever anything happened before, hadn't she always texted him about it and asked for his opinion?Zoe tried to comfort him."Maybe she's still mad. I'll call and ask where she is."She pulled out her phone and dialed, but all that came through was a cold automated message."Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable."Her expression stiffened. She opened their chat instead.[Quinn, where are you? Still mad?][Landon has a surprise for you today. It's something you're definitely going to love.]Her fingers moved quickly across the screen. Her message went through with a single gray tick, but the second one never appeared.Zoe stared at it in disbelief."Quinn blocked me."Landon frowned, and his anger flared almost instantly."I've let her stew for a whole month, and she still doesn't know when to quit?"Does she really think the whole world has to revolve around her?"As he spoke, he pulled ou

Landon didn't answer. His eyes flicked to the cut on my forehead, and without a word, he turned to find the first-aid kit. He pressed me down into a chair and gently wiped away the blood before treating the wound. His touch was careful, but his voice was ice-cold."What difference does it make?"Zoe cares too much about your friendship to ever get back together with me."I'd also promised her I'd marry you and take responsibility for you for the rest of my life."Isn't that enough?"I stared at him.So I was supposed to stay in this relationship and keep pretending to not see the way the two of them kept crossing lines right in front of me?He was careful not to hurt me, but the moment the medication touched the cut, pain shot through my forehead, and I clenched my fists. When I finally spoke, my voice was hoarse."No."Because this whole thing disgusts me."Because the man you are now doesn't deserve my love.Landon's hand froze in midair, and for a moment, his expression went complet
