“In his office.” Steele looked at me. “Maybe give him some time.”

“I’m not sure what he expected. I’m not a twelve-year-old learning how to fight for the first time. This isn’t even my worst injury.”

“No, but you are the first person he’s cared about. He’s maybe trying a little too hard. It doesn’t come natural for everyone.”

“Come natural? Do you realize how that sounds?”

Steele did a quiet laugh. That was more to himself than to me. “Yeah. I do.” He wasn’t looking at me anymore, but remember a memory that gave him some happiness. “Cut him some slack? Maybe not too much, but give him a chance to try to be a good mate?”

“Maybe you need to have another conversation with him about treating me like an equal and not a doll that needs its ass wiped.”

“You have a way with words.” Steele got up on his feet. “I’ll talk to him if you promise to stop being so hard on him. You may not see the difference, but Maddox has done a complete 180 since he met you.”

    Instead of a van, which I expected. Cade had a whole ambulance and gurney for me to use, so I stayed laying down. Maddox was sitting in a chair with his leg out, as I got pushed inside.     Her head was barely above the water when he lowered his face and growled in hers. As opened his mouth to attack, more wolves appeared just above the cliff. Their growls caused the wolf to immediately take off running. I watched as four wolves jumped the creek and took after him. “He’s down here!” Steele’s voice barked orders as he ran down.     My back slammed against a tree, making everything crack that shouldn’t. I watched in horror as I fell to the ground as Maddox’s car rolled over and over again. Until it fell from my view and down into the creek. “Cade?” I whispered, hoping he could hear me. Three wolves looked over the edge at Maddox. They way they looked at each other, I knew they were mind-linking. I wasn’t sure what condition Maddox was in, but I would not allow him to die. Mate or not. With every ounce of strength I had, I forced myself to my feet. My shoes were ripped from my body, my dress was torn, and my bracelet was gone. The only advantage I had was the fact they didn’t seem to realize I wasn’t in the car anymore. One wolf stayed up top, while I watched the other two slowly advance down the creek bed. This was my chance to kill at least one. Clawing it’s neck would be the easiest way since it was too big for me to snap it.
