KATE

I raised a hand above my head, shielding my face from the harsh glare of the sun. I closed my left eye, playing and teasing my vision. Little rays of sunlight peeked through the slit I was creating with my fingers.

“Kate!” For a minute, I was tempted to ignore the person calling my name. But then, my stomach betrayed me. It has been a while since I last ate. I was starving.

Flashing a practiced smile, I dropped my hand and propped myself up from lying down on the bleachers of the football field of our school.

I turned my attention towards the three approaching figures towards me, Annie, Claude, and Shane.
