Chapter 12

Auteur: Forrest Dawson
Mabel clearly didn't believe me. She sized me up from head to toe before speaking arrogantly.

"I heard you quit your job at Thompson Group. What's wrong? Are you tired of being a secretary? Ready to climb the corporate ladder now? Don't say I didn't warn you. If Sean can dump me today, he can toss you aside just as easily tomorrow. What makes you think you've got anything on me besides your pretty looks?"

Out of everything she said, I only really caught the word "pretty". I felt oddly flattered.

"You're too kind, Ms. Hamilton," I said.

Mabel was speechless. She opened her mouth to speak several times, her eyes widening in shock. She was probably stunned by my modesty.

"You're nothing but a low-class slut!" one of her companions exclaimed.

I simply listened quietly. Mabel's eyes flickered a few times before she nudged the loudmouth beside her, cutting off her outburst.

For a while, no one spoke. Awkwardness hung in the air.

Mabel cleared her throat before saying, "Let's not stray from the topic. This is about Sean and me. I don't care what you two are fighting about. All I know is that he called off our engagement and I'm the one who was embarrassed in front of everyone. A big part of that is on you."

A few more unreasonable accusations later, she seemed to regain her confidence. She glared at me furiously.

"Don't think you can just walk away and call it even. I'm not done with you!" Mabel continued.

I kept smiling all the way to the restaurant.

Initially, I'd promised Jason I wouldn't drink that night, but the sea breeze had me in a good mood. Unable to resist the temptation, I ordered a beer anyway.

Jessica seemed like she was still shaken from my last outburst. This time, she watched me drink, all the while talking nonstop.

"Are you not angry, Cassandra? Even after she said all those things about you?"

I pictured Mabel pointing at me and yelling, looking adorably feisty. "That young lady is actually quite adorable," I commented.

To be honest, Mabel reminded me of myself from years ago. I saw a lot of my younger self in her. Perhaps it was because I'd been through the same thing she was going through now that I understood how she felt.

There was nothing wrong with getting upset about having your engagement called off for no reason. If I'd gone through that back then, I would have torn the roof off the place, to say the least.

"Cassandra, you're only 24 years old," Jessica said. "Why are you calling her a young lady when we're all practically the same age?"

It felt like ages since I'd thought of myself as a young lady. Jessica's words caught me off guard.

Even when I failed to respond, she kept on talking. She suddenly asked, "Cassandra, why did you quit your job?"

I thought about it for a moment. "I couldn't stand our boss any longer," I replied honestly.

Jessica nodded vigorously. "Exactly! Do you also think Mr. Thompson struts around every day acting like he owns the place? He's so full of himself! The mere sight of him makes my legs weak with nerves!"

"What's going on? Is Sean giving you a hard time? Is that why you're so upset?" I asked.

Jessica shook her head fervently. "No, it's not like that! I just think that if you, of all people, chose to leave him, it has to be his fault."

Her eyes shone with astonishing intensity. "Cassandra, listen to me. You will find someone a thousand times better than Mr. Thompson!"

I propped my head up, my eyes crinkling as I smiled. I didn't speak for a moment. It wasn't until Jason walked closer to us that I spoke, tilting my head toward her.

"He's here," I said.

While Jessica looked on in confusion, Jason walked over to my side. He leaned down and placed a hand on my head, ruffling my hair as he spoke.

"Didn't you promise me you wouldn't drink?" he said, his voice deep and indulgent.

I couldn't tell if it was the alcohol affecting my nerves, but when Jason spoke, I could smell the faint scent of mint and soap fill the air around him. My eyes suddenly stung, and I buried my head deeper into my hands.

Jason said something to Jessica. His voice was too soft for me to catch what he was saying. As my head began to droop, he wrapped his arms around my waist and lifted me up.

Through the fabric of his shirt, I could hear his steady heartbeat.

Jason shielded me from the glaring lights. His cool touch briefly lingered on my earlobe. "Let's go home," he murmured softly.

Time seemed to rewind back several years. Back then, Sean had walked into my line of sight, his figure bathed in the moonlight. He was all I could see.

That night, I stood against the wind and reached out for him. I was merely 17 years old, willful and spoiled. The world laid beneath my feet, and wanting someone had meant losing all reason.

It was a nightmare I could never escape now.

"Come home with me, Sean," I had said back then.

Now, I sniffled. Jason pulled me closer, his hand brushing against my temple. He spoke softly, as though he were soothing a child.

"Don't cry. Everything will be okay."

I shook my head, unable to speak.

It wouldn't be okay. Nothing would ever be okay again.

Paul was naturally reluctant, but this was the only way Cassandra would understand how important today was.She was already in a foul mood, and the chatter around her grated on her nerves."Hey, Luke! I checked your ID last time. I know today's not your birthday. Did you change your age or something?" someone remarked."I just like celebrating early," Luke replied. "Why do you care anyway? Quit your whining. Every day is a good day for drinking. Whoever stops first is a wimp! Now, fill my glass!"I wasn't particularly into the game either. Losing meant nothing to me. When it was time for my "penalty", I glanced at Cassandra. She wasn't looking at me.I kissed the woman next to me on the cheek. But I knew that wasn't why Cassandra wanted to break up with me. All these years, I'd indulged her, turning a blind eye to whatever she did.I'd known she would leave me eventually. I just never imagined it would be now, nor did I think she would leave with such finality.By the time I l

Later, I heard that Jason had taken Cassandra abroad. Perhaps I'd done too many reprehensible things in my life, because when I found out about that, I almost felt relieved. The fact that she was willing to go with him was enough.Still, she returned quickly, sooner than I expected. When I saw her name on the list of interviewees for the position, I froze for a long time.I urgently rescheduled the interview for the next day.At that time, it had been four months since we last saw each other. When the Price family was in trouble, I hadn't shown up at all. The last time we sat this close, I was still calling her "Cassie"."Ms. Price," I said. "Are you aware of the position you're applying for?"The role in question was secretary to the general manager at Thompson Group's branch office—the former Price Corporation.Cassandra was still unable to control her emotions well. At my deliberate provocation, her eyes instantly welled up.I thought she would burst out crying within three

I began deliberately avoiding any news related to the Prices. I only learned in passing that Cassandra had been kidnapped by an enemy of the Price family from a news report that was playing in one of my employees' offices. The sudden collapse of Price Corporation had triggered a chain reaction of consequences. Some people lost their fortunes. Some lost their families. As for others, they lost both in the process. Some more extreme people seemed intent on dragging others down with them, driven by their desperate kill-or-be-killed obsession. The Price family was gone. Arthur was dead, and Adrian was in prison. So, naturally, Cassandra became the target of everyone's anger. The kidnappers planned it meticulously. They abducted Cassandra in a surveillance blind spot, using fake license plates and taking the back routes all the way. As a result, it took 24 hours after her abduction for anyone to report it. If Jason hadn't happened to return to the country, no one might have ever repo

A few years ago, Price Corporation could still be considered a business worth taking seriously. But against Thompson Group, especially as it stood then, it posed no real threat. That part was easy enough to take care of. Next came the emotional aspect. My thoughts instinctively turned to Arthur's pampered daughter, Cassandra. Sitting at my desk, I stared at the crumpled photograph of Carrie. Cassandra's features bore a certain resemblance to her mother's.Within days, I was able to map out her preferences. I then entered her life on a day perfect for romance. As she quickly brought her finished work to me, I responded coolly. I observed her bashful expression—I knew then that I had her.I'd been blessed with naturally striking looks, and I intended to make full use of them.Cassandra was rather straightforward. Upon learning that I was a part-time teaching assistant at her high school, she showed up punctually for every class I was in.She was more innocent than I'd imagined.

I left, sensible enough to know when to retreat. Still, I couldn't suppress the curiosity that had ignited within me.It didn't take much effort for me to figure out who the woman Harry had mentioned was. That night, the lighting had been too dim for me to make out more than a rough outline of her features. It wasn't until another photo of Carrie Quinn was placed before me that I finally understood what Harry had said that night. My eyes held a striking resemblance to hers. That realization struck me as laughably absurd, so much so that it made my skin crawl.Even Harry, a man of unfathomable depth who was arrogant and self-assured, could wind up being hopelessly trapped by a single woman. On second thought, perhaps I was being unfair to him. After all, he could never be with a married woman, and the only reason he'd brought me home in the first place was because of said married woman. After pondering this for a few more moments, I decided I didn't have much of a conscience. Extra: Sean's POVI was seven when I first met Harry Thompson.I wasn't the most striking among the group of children on the cusp of adolescence at the orphanage. In fact, I was one of the scrawniest because I was so malnourished.Every time I saw the glow of happiness on one of those kids' faces when they got picked up and taken away by wealthy families, I would feel a twinge of disappointment. That morning, when the director of the orphanage woke us up, she repeatedly urged us to wash up properly. Important guests were coming, she told us.I stared straight into her eyes. I hadn't learned how to hide my feelings just yet, and I was, at that time, full of disdain. I snorted lightly. The director was furious. She punished me by making me sweep the entire front yard until it was clean.I didn't resist, nor did I utter a single word. When the so-called important guests arrived at the orphanage, I swept a pile of fallen leaves directly onto the wealthy lady's dress as she got out
