Chapter 14

Penulis: Forrest Dawson
When it came to having me receive treatment in the hospital, Jason displayed an unshakeable decisiveness. Unfortunately, the person he was dealing with was me, and this was the one thing I refused to budge on.

Sadly, I didn't hold out for more than a few hours. I suddenly developed a fever in the middle of the night and was rushed to the hospital.

Lately, I'd grown rather lazy. When Jason was around, he would drag me out for a walk or two. Recently, though, he'd been busy with his own matters, so each time before he left, he would remind me to move around more.

I would always nod half-heartedly, then sit by the window and stare blankly out at the lawn. The grass was so green that it looked almost black. Every time, I would stay there for hours at a time.

Hospitals were, by nature, colorless places. So, when a little girl wearing a rainbow-colored hat appeared one day, I couldn't help but notice her.

She would always appear at the same time every day, around 4:30 pm, wearing the strangest hats. As she skipped in, there would always be someone chasing after her gently yet exasperatedly, urging her to slow down. Sometimes, it was a young couple; other times, it was an elderly gentleman.

The little girl had many loving family members and friends to play with. No matter who she encountered, she would greet them with a beaming smile. She was like a free-spirited butterfly.

I felt a little like a creep, but watching her smile became part of my daily routine. Every day, I would sit there eagerly. Sometimes, I wouldn't even notice when Jason returned to the hospital.

That day, the girl wore a hat with sunflowers all over it. To amuse her, the adults pretended not to see her and searched all over for her. A triumphant, radiant smile lit up the girl's face.

She began darting about restlessly, glancing back as she ran until she inadvertently bumped into someone.

Jason crouched down, holding a bouquet of sunflowers. He said something to the little girl before ruffling her hair and turning to look at me. His eyes sparkled.

The girl followed his gaze. I propped my chin on my hand, turning my head away in embarrassment.

A moment passed. When I looked over again, Jason and the girl were gone. I returned to my room and looked for my phone to call him. For some reason, my phone was nowhere to be found. Someone knocked on the door just then.

When I opened the door, the first thing I saw was her bright red hat. Then, I saw her lively eyes blinking at me.

The little girl's first words to me were, "Hi! You're so pretty!"

She then poked her head in mischievously. "Jason said if you don't come downstairs, he'll give your flowers away to the nurse!"

I froze. The little girl couldn't wait any longer. She darted inside, took my hand, and led me outside.

She led me out into the sunlight where Jason stood waiting for me, holding a bouquet of fresh flowers in his arms.

The little girl chattered nonstop from the second we met.

She told me her name was Petunia Springs, like the flower. She stayed in the room two doors down from me, but since I never left my room, I never had the chance to meet her. Petunia told me she'd wanted to talk to me for ages. After all, us pretty girls must have endless topics to chat about.

From that day on, I had a new little friend in the hospital.

Petunia loved braiding my hair. She would prop her chin up to gaze at me as she asked, "How long would I have to live to have hair as long as yours, Cass?"

Her question caught me off guard.

Petunia's condition was more severe than mine. Her hair had already fallen out, so she always wore a hat. I knew Petunia, like every girl, wanted to be beautiful too.

Petunia's voice was cautious when she asked about my hair. Her eyes were bright with hope.

I gently brushed her nose and said, "I've been growing my hair out for so many years now that I've forgotten how long it took me. Take your time, Petunia. Let it grow slowly. When you get to my age, you'll definitely have long, luscious hair."

She believed me completely, her eyes brimming with hope as she nodded happily.

I supposed not even the heavens could bear to take a girl as wonderful as Petunia away so quickly.

Soon enough, the hospital notified Petunia that a match had been found for her bone marrow transplant.

The day before Petunia was admitted to the isolation ward in preparation for her transplant, my condition suddenly took a turn for the worse, nearly taking my life. The pain pierced my bones. The doctor gave me some medication and told me I would have to endure it on my own.

The next morning, my hospital gown was soaked through with sweat. I felt as though I'd been crushed to pieces, then pieced back together. I fought for control over my own body as I hovered at the edge of life and death.

It was then that I realized what I'd taken for granted had become an unattainable luxury. Now, sleeping or even breathing without pain and suffering seemed impossible.

I slept heavily, like someone who'd just emerged from battle. I was drained of all strength and energy, yet I was still aware of everything around me.

I couldn't tell how much time had passed before faint sounds reached me from outside the ward. Then, I heard a familiar voice that I couldn't place somehow.

Moments later, the door was pushed open. Someone approached me softly, but my eyelids were too heavy to lift. After a long while, I began fading into unconsciousness again.

Vaguely, I felt a pair of warm hands touch me, gently smoothing the creases between my brows. That touch was familiar, so familiar that my heart ached.

When I first stayed with Sean, I would sleep with my back to him out of habit. Initially, he said nothing. Afterward, however, he would forcibly pull me into his arms.

From then on, even in my half-asleep state, I could always feel him gently smoothing out my unintentionally furrowed brows. At first, I pushed him away impatiently.

Eventually, though, I just let him do whatever he wanted.

Paul was naturally reluctant, but this was the only way Cassandra would understand how important today was.She was already in a foul mood, and the chatter around her grated on her nerves."Hey, Luke! I checked your ID last time. I know today's not your birthday. Did you change your age or something?" someone remarked."I just like celebrating early," Luke replied. "Why do you care anyway? Quit your whining. Every day is a good day for drinking. Whoever stops first is a wimp! Now, fill my glass!"I wasn't particularly into the game either. Losing meant nothing to me. When it was time for my "penalty", I glanced at Cassandra. She wasn't looking at me.I kissed the woman next to me on the cheek. But I knew that wasn't why Cassandra wanted to break up with me. All these years, I'd indulged her, turning a blind eye to whatever she did.I'd known she would leave me eventually. I just never imagined it would be now, nor did I think she would leave with such finality.By the time I l

Later, I heard that Jason had taken Cassandra abroad. Perhaps I'd done too many reprehensible things in my life, because when I found out about that, I almost felt relieved. The fact that she was willing to go with him was enough.Still, she returned quickly, sooner than I expected. When I saw her name on the list of interviewees for the position, I froze for a long time.I urgently rescheduled the interview for the next day.At that time, it had been four months since we last saw each other. When the Price family was in trouble, I hadn't shown up at all. The last time we sat this close, I was still calling her "Cassie"."Ms. Price," I said. "Are you aware of the position you're applying for?"The role in question was secretary to the general manager at Thompson Group's branch office—the former Price Corporation.Cassandra was still unable to control her emotions well. At my deliberate provocation, her eyes instantly welled up.I thought she would burst out crying within three

I began deliberately avoiding any news related to the Prices. I only learned in passing that Cassandra had been kidnapped by an enemy of the Price family from a news report that was playing in one of my employees' offices. The sudden collapse of Price Corporation had triggered a chain reaction of consequences. Some people lost their fortunes. Some lost their families. As for others, they lost both in the process. Some more extreme people seemed intent on dragging others down with them, driven by their desperate kill-or-be-killed obsession. The Price family was gone. Arthur was dead, and Adrian was in prison. So, naturally, Cassandra became the target of everyone's anger. The kidnappers planned it meticulously. They abducted Cassandra in a surveillance blind spot, using fake license plates and taking the back routes all the way. As a result, it took 24 hours after her abduction for anyone to report it. If Jason hadn't happened to return to the country, no one might have ever repo

A few years ago, Price Corporation could still be considered a business worth taking seriously. But against Thompson Group, especially as it stood then, it posed no real threat. That part was easy enough to take care of. Next came the emotional aspect. My thoughts instinctively turned to Arthur's pampered daughter, Cassandra. Sitting at my desk, I stared at the crumpled photograph of Carrie. Cassandra's features bore a certain resemblance to her mother's.Within days, I was able to map out her preferences. I then entered her life on a day perfect for romance. As she quickly brought her finished work to me, I responded coolly. I observed her bashful expression—I knew then that I had her.I'd been blessed with naturally striking looks, and I intended to make full use of them.Cassandra was rather straightforward. Upon learning that I was a part-time teaching assistant at her high school, she showed up punctually for every class I was in.She was more innocent than I'd imagined.

I left, sensible enough to know when to retreat. Still, I couldn't suppress the curiosity that had ignited within me.It didn't take much effort for me to figure out who the woman Harry had mentioned was. That night, the lighting had been too dim for me to make out more than a rough outline of her features. It wasn't until another photo of Carrie Quinn was placed before me that I finally understood what Harry had said that night. My eyes held a striking resemblance to hers. That realization struck me as laughably absurd, so much so that it made my skin crawl.Even Harry, a man of unfathomable depth who was arrogant and self-assured, could wind up being hopelessly trapped by a single woman. On second thought, perhaps I was being unfair to him. After all, he could never be with a married woman, and the only reason he'd brought me home in the first place was because of said married woman. After pondering this for a few more moments, I decided I didn't have much of a conscience. Extra: Sean's POVI was seven when I first met Harry Thompson.I wasn't the most striking among the group of children on the cusp of adolescence at the orphanage. In fact, I was one of the scrawniest because I was so malnourished.Every time I saw the glow of happiness on one of those kids' faces when they got picked up and taken away by wealthy families, I would feel a twinge of disappointment. That morning, when the director of the orphanage woke us up, she repeatedly urged us to wash up properly. Important guests were coming, she told us.I stared straight into her eyes. I hadn't learned how to hide my feelings just yet, and I was, at that time, full of disdain. I snorted lightly. The director was furious. She punished me by making me sweep the entire front yard until it was clean.I didn't resist, nor did I utter a single word. When the so-called important guests arrived at the orphanage, I swept a pile of fallen leaves directly onto the wealthy lady's dress as she got out
