Chapter 31 - A Point of Understanding

The screech of the sliding door being wrenched open broke the tense silence inside the studio.

"Bayu!"

Michi's breath came ragged, her voice hoarse and shaking from the doorway. Her riding jacket sat slightly crooked, her long hair a mess from the wind on the road, and her eyes went wide with panic as she scanned the room. She hadn't even bothered to park her scooter straight, abandoning it half-crooked against the curb outside in her rush to get down the stairs. She'd braced herself for a brawl, shattered coffee glasses, or score sheets scattered across the floor from a fit of rage.

But what she found instead was the exact opposite: Bayu stood calm with one hand in his pocket, while Rimba leaned against the edge of the mixing desk, his expression flat, hiding the last traces of an emotional storm. There was no lingering anger left burning between them; only the cool remnants of a confrontation slowly thawing into something else.

Bayu turned slowly toward the door, raising an eyebrow at the sight of his sister arriving as if she'd just escaped a war zone. "Ten minutes late, Kak. If I'd actually wanted to start trouble earlier, this studio would probably be flattened by now."

Michi strode inside, planting herself immediately between the two of them. She shot Bayu a sharp look, then turned to check Rimba's expression with visible worry, making sure there were no scratches or cruel words that had been exchanged. "Are you okay, Rimba? This kid didn't say anything weird, right? Bayu, what were you even thinking, coming here without telling me first?"

Rimba let out a soft huff, a thin smile full of relief rising at the corner of his mouth. He reached into his jacket pocket, then stepped closer to smooth down Michi's messy hair with a gentle, entirely natural motion—a sight that made Bayu instinctively turn his face away, clearing his throat quietly to cover his own awkwardness.

"He didn't say anything weird, Maestro," Rimba answered low, his dark eyes staring straight into Michi's, still shrouded in the leftover traces of fear. "Your little brother here... turns out to be a lot sharper than I gave him credit for. He just came to make sure I wasn't dragging his sister off some cliff into ruin."

Bayu let out a quiet huff, stepping over to retrieve his backpack, slung over a chair. He studied his sister closely, noticing that the glint in Michi's eyes today was different from all the days before it—there was an absolute steadiness now, one that could no longer be broken by any threat, whether it came from the conservatory institution or from the shadow of their extended family's expectations. There was a new maturity radiating from the way his sister now stood, guarding her own world.

"I'm heading home first," Bayu said flatly, though there was a softer edge at the end of his sentence. He glanced briefly at Rimba before turning toward the exit. "And as for you, Swara... remember what I said earlier. If Kak Michi ends up failing over something as pointless as this, I'll personally be back here with reinforcements."

"Ride safe, you nag," Michi shot back, half shooing him out, though her breathing had already eased considerably, and the corner of her mouth couldn't quite hide a genuine, small smile.

Once the sound of the motorbike carrying Bayu away had faded from the courtyard outside, silence crept back into the underground room—no longer a suffocating silence, but a warm, familiar, calming one. Rimba let out a long breath, dropping himself back into his tall stool, then patted the empty space beside him at the desk.

Michi stepped closer, letting her tired body lean against the side of the desk, right next to Rimba's arm. He didn't say much; he simply wrapped an arm slowly around Michi's shoulders, letting her find comfort in the middle of a day full of emotional storms. The particular smell of light tobacco and black coffee mixed together in that small room, creating a safe cocoon in the middle of an outside world that demanded nothing less than perfection.

"Did you really challenge Professor Hans at campus earlier?" Rimba asked softly, his voice almost a whisper right beside Michi's ear, carrying a pride he could barely hide.

Michi closed her eyes for a moment, savoring the warmth of Rimba's hand resting on her shoulder. "Yeah. And for the first time, I didn't feel scared at all, Rimba. It felt like... I could finally breathe using my own lungs."

Rimba tightened his arm around her, pressing a brief kiss to the top of her head. Outside, the Yogyakarta night settled peacefully down over the city, carrying with it the certainty that they had successfully weathered the biggest storm yet, together—proof that true love was never about locking each other away in a cage, but about the courage to set each other free.

They stayed like that for a long while, neither one in any hurry to move or speak, letting the quiet hum of the monitor speaker and the occasional passing motorbike outside fill in the spaces between them. Michi found herself thinking, not for the first time that week, that she'd spent so many years imagining freedom as something she would have to fight her family for, piece by piece, in open confrontation. She hadn't expected it to arrive quietly instead, in the shape of her own brother walking away satisfied rather than furious, and a boy who'd known exactly the right thing to say to a stranger determined to hate him on principle. Whatever came next—Vienna, the dean's office, the rest of her final year—she felt, for once, steady enough to meet it as herself, without flinching, and without needing anyone's permission first. Even Bayu's parting threat, gruff as it had sounded, had landed more like a brother's clumsy blessing than a warning. She let her eyes drift shut for a moment, listening to Rimba's breathing beside her, and decided that whatever tomorrow brought could wait a little longer than usual.

One year later. The main auditorium of the Swasemesta Music Conservatory was packed with visitors that night, far exceeding its normal capacity for the Graduating Class Culmination Night—an annual tradition in which the top graduates from each department are given one more chance to perform in front of the public before officially stepping out through their alma mater's gates. Strings of white fairy lights had been draped along the balcony railings for the occasion, and the smell of fresh flowers from the front-row arrangements drifted faintly all the way backstage.Backstage, Michiko Arunika Suryokusumo stood in front of a dressing mirror, wearing a long black gown, elegant yet simple. But unlike every formal performance she'd given over the past four years, this time there was one detail she had never once allowed to appear on an official conservatory stage before: a pair of drumsticks tucked neatly inside a small bag hanging from the side of her dressing chair

Two weeks passed since that night on the porch, and slowly, the rhythm of their life together began finding its shape again. The campaign video never resurfaced. Not because Surya had truly given up—Rimba knew his father well enough to know that a man like that never truly stops, only waits for a more advantageous moment. The last update to reach Rimba's ears was that his father's media team had their hands full managing the agenda ahead of next year's election season, and for the time being, neither Rimba's name nor Michi's was useful enough to bother with. The threat hadn't disappeared. It was only sleeping, waiting for a better time to wake up again. What he knew for certain was that, for the first time in years, he was no longer carrying every anxiety that surfaced from his father's shadow alone. Every time that name crossed his mind, he told Michi about it, sometimes Bayu too, sometimes Kelana over the long phone calls they'd started making a regular habit e

Michi was rearranging some sheet music in her room when the notification sound on her phone rang out—a message from Rimba, brief but different from the empty messages she'd been receiving so often lately, the kind that used to arrive hours late with nothing real inside them.I'm outside your house. Can I come in? I promise, this time I'll tell you everything. She stared at that screen for a long time before finally heading downstairs, opening the front door with a hand that trembled slightly. Rimba stood there, his face tired but his eyes showing something different from the past few weeks—no longer that evasive look, but a seriousness he rarely ever showed. They sat on the front porch, among the potted flowers Akari usually tended, lit by the dim yellow light that evening, the same porch light that had watched over every homecoming and every quiet argument this family had ever had."Chi, I'm sorry," Rimba said, starting with

Maharani's dance studio was still lit even though the hour had grown late, dim lights illuminating the wooden floor her students usually used to practice Pakarena dance in the afternoons. The building was otherwise silent, the kind of silence that only settles into a place built for music and movement once both have gone quiet for the night. Rimba found his mother alone there, sitting cross-legged in the middle of the empty room, staring silently at the large mirror reflecting her own image back at her."Not asleep yet, Ma?" Rimba stepped inside, sitting down on the floor not far from his mother."Hard to sleep with a head this full of thoughts." Maharani turned, smiling thinly at the sight of her eldest son's tired face, far more tired than he usually let show. "You look the same way, Rim. What's wrong?"For a few moments, Rimba simply sat still, staring at his own reflection in the mirror, trying to arrange words that had felt too heavy to say out loud for wee

  • Michiko's Symphony   Chapter 57 - The One Quietly Watching

Michi hadn't spoken much since that night in the studio. She still went to her classes as usual, still smiled in front of her parents, still answered every question at the dinner table the way she always had, but Bayu—who had grown up learning to read his sister since childhood—knew perfectly well that something was wrong behind that thin, forced smile. He didn't ask right away. Bayu wasn't the type to push someone to talk before they were ready, a restraint he'd learned the hard way after his first, clumsy attempt to interrogate Rimba in this same basement months earlier. But this time, he pointed his old habit—following political news, digging through the track records of public figures purely as material for casual class debates—toward one name that had kept appearing on his social media timeline these past few weeks: Surya Pratama. That night, in his room, Bayu sat for hours combing through old news archives, political discussion forums, eve

  • Michiko's Symphony   Chapter 56 - A Wall Standing Again

Ten days passed since that meeting, and the campaign video that had briefly caused an uproar was finally taken down quietly, as though it had never existed at all. For everyone else, the problem felt resolved. For Rimba, that was exactly where his unease truly began. He knew his father wasn't going to stop that easily. And the only solution he could think of to make sure Michi wasn't targeted again was to distance himself—to make the two of them look no longer close enough to be turned into material for any story. He started canceling plans one by one, quietly, without ever framing it as what it actually was. The excuse of "a lot of studio work" became the sentence that left his mouth most often. Replies to messages that used to come quickly now arrived hours later, short, half-hearted. Even in the basement studio, the very place that had once witnessed the beginning of all their secrets, Rimba started showing up alone at odd hours more often, leaving behind mess
