Maya’s POV

I stood in the middle of the dark room. The fake Sarah pointed her gun at Liam. Why does my life stay full of pain and touches from strangers? I just want peace with the people I love.

Liam looked at me with strong eyes. “Maya do not listen to her. She is not your sister.”

The fake Sarah smiled. “But I lived every hard moment with you. I know your body, I know your shame. Choose me and we rule together.”

Richard Cross watched from the corner. He smiled like he enjoyed the show. S

  • Midnight Heat   Tiny Miracles

Maya’s POVThe hospital room stayed quiet except for the soft beep of the monitor. Liam sat beside the bed and held my hand. Sarah stood near the window with her arms crossed. The sharp pain from the garden had faded, but the worry in the room had not.The doctor returned with a folder and a calm expression. “We ran every check,” she said. “The baby’s heartbeat is strong. Your levels look normal. The pain was likely a combination of stress, the long day, and early pregnancy changes. Both of you are healthy.”I let out a long breath. Liam’s fingers tightened around mine. Sarah stepped closer and rested a hand on my shoulder.“You’re sure?” Liam asked.“I’m sure,” the doctor answered. “Rest tonight. Drink water. Come back for the regular prenatal visit next week. There is no sign of danger.”She left the room. I looked at the small printed image from the earlier ultrasound that still lay on the side table. The tiny shape looked the same. Safe.“I was so scared,” I said quietly.Liam lea

  • Midnight Heat    A Love Worth Waiting For

Maya’s POVThe garden behind the new foundation building held rows of simple white chairs. Soft flowers lined the short aisle in quiet colors. Friends and the people who had stood with us through every hard month filled the seats. Afternoon light came through the trees in gentle patches. A soft string of music began to play from speakers near the front.Sarah stood beside me at the back of the aisle. She wore a pale blue dress and carried a small bouquet that matched the one in my hands. Her fingers rested lightly on my arm.“You look ready,” she said.“I am,” I answered. “More ready than I have ever been for anything.”She squeezed my arm once. “Then we walk.”We stepped forward together. The guests rose. I saw faces I knew well. Elena, Chloe, Damien, and the children sitting in the first row. My heart beat hard against my ribs, but my steps stayed even. Sarah matched my pace without rushing. The short walk felt longer than it was. Every face turned toward us. I kept my eyes on Liam

  • Midnight Heat   New Beginnings

Maya’s POVThree months after the proposal the city felt different. The Cross name no longer hung on any building. The foundation work filled most of our days. I stood in the empty lobby of a small office block my family had owned before the empire tried to swallow everything. The keys felt light in my hand. The court had returned the property to me clean and free of claims.Sarah walked through the open space beside me. “This will work,” she said. “High windows. Room for counseling offices on the second floor. A safe meeting hall on the ground level.”I nodded. “We turn it into the Sarah Foundation headquarters. No more temporary rooms. This becomes the permanent center.”Liam carried a box of foundation signs through the door. “The painters finish next week. The first clients can walk in the week after that.”Chloe arrived with a notebook already open. She had spent the last month training with the counseling team. Today she looked ready.“I want to join full time,” Chloe said. “I k

  • Midnight Heat   One Question

Maya’s POVLiam drove us along the quiet road that followed the river. The evening sky held soft pink light. I wore a simple dress he had asked me to choose. My hands rested in my lap. He had not told me the exact place, only that it mattered. We stopped at a small riverside park. The same park where we had walked one night months ago after a long day of searching for answers about Sarah. That night we had stood by the water and admitted, without using the words yet, that we needed each other. The benches were empty now. The river moved slowly past the trees.Liam turned off the engine and looked at me. “This is the place,” he said. “Do you remember?”“I remember,” I answered. “We stood over there by the low wall. You told me you would not let me face the rest of the fight alone.”He got out and came around to open my door. We walked together across the grass to the same spot. The air smelled of water and leaves. He stopped and faced me. For a moment neither of us spoke.“I loved you

  • Midnight Heat   A Future Worth Choosing

Maya’s POVThe morning light came soft through the kitchen windows. I stood at the counter pouring coffee when Sarah walked in with a quiet smile. Liam followed a moment later. His shoulders looked less tense than they had the night before. The children were still asleep upstairs. The house felt calm in a way it had not for a long time.Sarah sat at the table and looked at both of us. “I thought about what you asked me last night,” she said to Liam. “I did not need much time.”Liam waited without speaking. His hands rested on the back of a chair.“You protected my sister when I could not,” Sarah continued. “You stayed through the worst days. You never asked her to be anyone but herself. You have my blessing. Take care of her the way she deserves.”I set the coffee pot down carefully. My chest felt warm and tight at the same time. Liam’s eyes met mine across the room. A small, steady smile touched his mouth.“Thank you,” he said to Sarah. His voice was low and clear. “I will.”Sarah st

  • Midnight Heat   Sarah’s Legacy

Maya’s POVThe legal challenge against Sarah’s trust lasted nine long days. Lawyers filled a small hearing room with arguments about old account numbers and residual claims. I sat through every session with Sarah beside me. Elena supplied the original records she had recovered from the encrypted drives. Damien stood near the door each morning and evening, watching the faces of the people who claimed the money still belonged to the Cross name.On the final afternoon the judge reviewed the last set of papers and looked up. “The trust was created with funds diverted by Sarah for a clear charitable purpose,” he said. “The money never returned to the empire’s general accounts. The challenge is denied. The trust remains intact under its original terms.”Sarah let out a slow breath. I reached for her hand under the table and held it. The gavel struck once. The room began to clear. Outside on the courthouse steps the air felt lighter than it had in weeks.Elena closed her folder. “It is prote
