11:58 PM – Aria’s Foster Home, South L.A.

Aria barely made it off the night bus before her phone started ringing again.

“Unknown Number” but she already knew who it was.

She answered, breathless. “Hello?”

“Where the hell are you, Aria?” barked Maureen, the woman who’d raised her since she was thirteen. “You think you’re grown now? You’re needed at home!”

Aria frowned. “Needed for what? I just got off work. It's midnight, Maureen.”

“Well, your shift ain’t my business, is it? Your foster daddy is in trouble.”

Aria stiffened. “What kind of trouble?”

“Just bring cash. And hurry. I ain’t explaining over the phone.” Click.

She sighed and Just like that, she started walking. The night air was cold, and her thin jacket didn’t do much. She gripped the envelope in her bag tightly tips she hadn’t even counted yet.

When she got to the worn-down house, Maureen was already waiting on the porch, arms folded.

“You’re just getting here? You took your sweet time,” she spat.

“I came straight from work,” Aria said through clenched teeth. “What’s going on?”

Maureen didn’t answer. She just pushed open the door.

Inside, the house smelled like stale beer, sweat, and cheap cologne. Frank, Maureen’s unemployed boyfriend, was sprawled on the couch, face red and voice slurred.

“Ariaaa!” he slurred. “My little breadwinner.”

Aria’s stomach turned.

Maureen snatched the envelope from her bag like it was hers by right. “We need this.”

Aria blinked. “That’s my rent. I’ve been saving—”

“He lost everything tonight,” Maureen snapped, jerking her head toward Frank. “Poker went sideways. They’re coming back to collect. You want them to break our legs?”

“Our?” Aria said bitterly. “Last time I checked, I wasn’t sitting at the table.”

Maureen narrowed her eyes. “You ungrateful little bitch.... after everything we’ve done for you. This is how you talk to us?”

“You didn’t raise me. You fed me so I could work and send you money,” Aria said, voice shaking.

Frank stood up suddenly, staggering toward her. “You better watch your mouth, girl.”

“I’m leaving,” Aria said, backing toward the door. “I have to be up in four hours anyway.”

“You’re not going anywhere!” Maureen hissed. “Not until we’re square.”

“You already took the money!” Aria shouted.

Maureen didn’t flinch. “Then let me make it easier for you.”

She grabbed the small duffel bag from the corner of the room... That was Aria’s only real possession and threw it at her feet.

“You’re done here.”

Aria froze. “What?”

“You heard me. Get out.” Maureen sneered. “We don’t need your attitude. And we sure as hell don’t need your sob story.”

“I don’t have anywhere to go…”

Frank chuckled from the couch. “Try those rich guys who gives you tips. Bet one would take you in for a night.”

The words hit like acid.

Aria’s throat closed. She turned, grabbed her bag, and walked out... she isn't begging anyone.

---

1:21 AM – Cold Sidewalk,

She sat on the curb outside a closed laundromat, hugging her bag to her chest. Her phone battery blinked at 8%. She had no apartment, no family, no future plans.

She opened her bag and stared at the black card.

Royalton Hotel. Room 807.

She had sworn not to go. She wasn’t that kind of girl. She’d never done anything like it before.

But she was cold and currently Homeless. And carrying a $35 tip in quarters.

She looked up at the sky and whispered, “God, are You watching this? Do You even care?”

The silence answered.

Slowly, she rose to her feet, wiping her face. Her fingers trembled as she pulled out her phone and called a cab.

“Where to?” the driver asked.

She hesitated. Then finally said, “Royalton Hotel. Downtown.”

---

1:57 AM – Royalton Hotel, Room 807

She stood outside the room, heart pounding. Her reflection in the polished hallway mirror showed a tired girl in a wrinkled jacket, eyes wide and afraid.

She raised her fist. Paused.

Just knock.

But what if he laughs? What if he changed his mind? What if she was making the worst mistake of her life?

She didn’t knock.

The door opened on its own.

He stood there. Shirtless, barefoot, his pants hung low on his hips, and he didn’t look vulgar though. He looked... tired. Still sharp and unreadable.

He looked at her.

“I—I wasn’t sure if I should come,” she whispered.

He stepped aside, holding the door open. “But you are here.”

Aria didn’t move.

“I won’t touch you unless you want me to,” he said softly. “You can leave anytime.”

Her voice cracked. “Why me?”

He paused. “Because when I saw you tonight, it occured to me that I needed a companion... and you were good”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

And she walked inside.

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 54 - New Beginnings

Maya's POV"You're nervous," Liam observed, watching me fidget with my blazer for the third time in five minutes."I'm not nervous. I'm... strategically concerned about first impressions.""You're nervous." He reached over and stilled my hands with his own. "It's adorable.""Adorable is not the look I'm going for on my first day at Peterson & Associates.""What look are you going for?""Competent. Professional. Like someone who definitely didn't get her last job because her boss was secretly in love with her."Liam's expression softened. "Maya, you got that job because you're brilliant. Everything that happened between us was secondary to the fact that you're one of the most talented lawyers I've ever worked with.""You have to say that. You're sleeping with me now.""I'm saying it because it's true. And I was thinking it long before we ever kissed."We were sitting in his car outside the Peterson & Associates building, both of us starting our new jobs this morning. Equal partners, eq

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 53 - Reconnection

Aria's POVEmma had finally settled into a deep sleep after what felt like hours of fussing, and the apartment was blissfully quiet. Three weeks postpartum, and I was just starting to feel like myself again—physically, at least. Emotionally, everything was still new territory.Damien was in the kitchen, cleaning up after dinner with the methodical precision he brought to everything. I watched him from the couch, marveling at how domestic he'd become. Three weeks ago, I would have bet money that Damien Knight had never loaded a dishwasher in his life."She's out?" he asked, noticing my stare."Finally. I think she was testing how long we could function on two hours of sleep."He dried his hands on the kitchen towel and came to sit beside me, close enough that I could smell his cologne mixed with baby powder—a combination that had somehow become incredibly appealing."You look tired," he said, brushing a strand of hair away from my face."Gee, thanks. Every woman loves to hear that.""Y

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 52 - I Love you

Aria's POV"She's Beautiful" Maya said for the dozenth time, cradling Emma against her chest. "Like, unnaturally perfect. Are you sure she's not some kind of baby model?""Pretty sure," I laughed, watching my best friend completely melt over my two-week-old daughter. "Though Damien is convinced she's gifted.""Where is the proud papa, anyway?""Conference call with his lawyer. Apparently Victoria's legal team is trying to claim the recording was obtained illegally.""And?""And Damien's lawyer thinks they're grasping at straws. One-party consent state, she wasn't coerced into saying anything, and everything she said was true." I settled back into the couch, finally feeling relaxed for the first time in weeks. "How are things with Liam?"Maya's face lit up in a way I hadn't seen since before her heartbreak began. "Good. Really good, actually. We start at Peterson & Associates next month.""Together?""As equals. Same title, same pay, same partnership track. No more power dynamics to wo

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 51 - The Truth Comes Out

Maya's POVI was sitting outside the boardroom, waiting for what felt like my execution, when my phone buzzed with a news alert that made me blink twice to make sure I was reading it correctly."BREAKING: Audio Recording Reveals Victoria Ashford's Alleged Harassment Campaign Against Business Associates"My hands shook as I clicked the link. The article included a crystal-clear recording of Victoria's conversation with Damien from that morning—her admission to orchestrating the leak, her threats against my career, her demands for a public apology. But it wasn't just the recording. The article also detailed Victoria's history of using private investigators to dig up dirt on perceived enemies, her pattern of retaliating against anyone who crossed her, and several other instances where careers had been mysteriously derailed after someone had fallen out of her favor."Holy shit," I whispered."Language, Ms. Chen." I looked up to find Liam standing over me, his expression unreadable. But t

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 50 - Dirty Games

Damien's POVVictoria answered her phone on the first ring, as if she'd been waiting for my call."Damien. I was wondering when I'd hear from you.""Call it off.""Call what off?" Her voice was honey-sweet, innocent. The same tone she'd used when denying she'd "accidentally" spilled wine on women she considered competition at charity galas."The smear campaign against Maya Chen. The photos, the leak to the press. All of it.""I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about."I was pacing my penthouse, Emma sleeping peacefully in the portable crib I'd had delivered that morning. Aria was resting in my bedroom—our bedroom, now, though we were still figuring out what that meant."Don't play games with me, Victoria. You're the only person who would have known about Liam's business trip, the only one with both the resources and the motivation to orchestrate this.""And what motivation would that be?""Revenge. You want to hurt me, so you're going after people in my orbit."A pause. When sh

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 49 - Complications

Maya's POVI knew something was wrong the moment I walked into the office Monday morning. The usual buzz of conversation died as soon as I appeared, and I could feel eyes following me as I made my way to my desk.Jennifer from accounting was the first to approach, her face a mask of barely contained curiosity."Maya, is it true?" she whispered, glancing around to make sure no one was listening."Is what true?""About you and..." She nodded toward Liam's office. "The rumors flying around are insane."My stomach dropped. "What rumors?""That you two were... you know. Involved. And that's why you got promoted so fast."I felt the blood drain from my face. "That's not—""Maya." Liam's voice cut across the office like a blade. "My office. Now."The walk to his office felt like a death march, especially with half the office watching. I stepped inside and closed the door behind me, my hands shaking."Sit down," he said without looking up from his desk.I sat, trying to keep my voice steady.
