Los Angeles

“Aria! Table six has been waiting ten minutes! Are you asleep?”

The voice cracked like a whip across the noisy bar. Mona, the manager, glared at her from behind the counter, arms crossed.

“I’m on it,” Aria called back, forcing her voice to stay even. She balanced the tray on her aching arm and wove through the crowd, flashing her best fake smile.

She placed the cocktails on the sticky table with a soft, “Sorry for the wait.”

The man didn’t look up from his phone. The woman with him rolled her eyes. “Finally. What were you doing, sleeping in the back?”

Aria swallowed hard, biting back the words clawing at her throat. Smile, Aria. Always smile. “Enjoy your drinks,” she murmured and left.

As she headed toward the bar, Jenny, her only friend on the night shift, joined her with two empty glasses in hand.

“You okay? You look like you’re ready to drop.”

Aria laughed without humor. “I’ve been ready to drop since last week.”

Jenny smirked. “Girl, you need a new job. This place will kill you before the rent does.”

Aria gave her a wry smile. “Tell that to my lovely foster family. If I quit, who’s going to keep sending them money?”

Jenny rolled her eyes. “Seriously? They’re still bleeding you dry?”

“Yeah,” Aria sighed. “Apparently, feeding me at sixteen came with a lifetime contract.”

Jenny shook her head. “They’re using you. You know that, right?”

“Of course I know. But what choice do I have?” Aria muttered, brushing crumbs off her apron. “If I don’t pay up, they’ll kick my stuff out. Everything I own is in that house.”

Jenny was about to reply when the door opened and for a second, the bar seemed to hush.

He walked in.

Tall, broad-shouldered, wearing a suit that fit like sin. Dark hair slicked back, jaw sharp enough to cut glass, eyes that could burn through steel. He looked like a man who didn’t wait in lines... ever.

Jenny let out a low whistle. “Holy molly... who is that? Looks like he owns this place.”

“Probably owns the whole block,” Aria muttered, pretending not to stare.

Jenny nudged her. “You’re not blind, right? Look at him. He’s… damn.”

Aria chuckled softly, shaking her head. “Rich men like him don’t even see girls like us.”

“Wanna bet?” Jenny grinned.

Before Aria could respond, Mona appeared behind them, shoving a notepad into her hand. “VIP booth. He asked for service. Go.”

Aria blinked. “What? Why me?”

“Because you’re standing here, and I said so. Now move before he gets bored and leaves. We need customers like him.”

Heart hammering, Aria smoothed her hair and walked toward the corner booth. He was seated alone, phone in one hand, a glass of water untouched in front of him.

“Good evening,” she said softly, clearing her throat. “What can I get you?”

He looked up.

God. Those eyes. Dark, piercing, with something unreadable lurking in them. For a moment, he just stared and she felt stripped bare, like he could see every secret she carried.

Finally, his deep voice broke the silence. “Whiskey. Neat.”

She scribbled it down, forcing herself to stay calm. “Anything else?”

He tilted his head slightly. “Your name.”

The question caught her off guard. “My… name?”

“Yes,” he said, like it was the most ordinary thing in the world. “What do they call you?”

“Aria,” she answered after a pause.

“Aria,” he repeated slowly, like savoring the taste. “Pretty name.”

Heat crept up her neck, and she hated herself for it. “Thanks,” she murmured and fled to the counter.

Jenny was waiting with wide eyes. “Girl, what did he say? Does he have a brother?”

Aria rolled her eyes. “Just wanted whiskey.”

“And your name,” Jenny teased, smirking. “He’s definitely looking at you.”

“Stop it,” Aria hissed, though her heart wasn’t listening.

When she returned to the booth with the drink, he was still scrolling through his phone. She set the glass down carefully. “Here you go.”

His eyes flicked up again, pinning her in place. “Sit.”

Aria blinked. “I—I can’t. I’m working.”

“Just for a minute,” he said smoothly. “Consider it part of the tip.”

She hesitated. “If Mona sees—”

“I’ll take care of Mona.” His voice carried a quiet authority that made her stomach twist.

Against her better judgment, she slid into the booth—keeping a careful distance. “You, uh… come here often?” she asked awkwardly.

One corner of his mouth curved in something like amusement. “No.”

“Okay… so, what brings you here?”

“You.”

The word hung between them, heavy and electrifying. Aria’s breath caught. “You don’t even know me.”

“Not yet,” he said, voice low. “But I’d like to.”

Her pulse quickened. This was insane. Men like him didn’t notice girls like her not unless they wanted something.

As if reading her thoughts, he leaned in slightly, his cologne wrapping around her like smoke. “What do you need, Aria? Money? A way out of… this?” His gaze swept the bar, then returned to her.

She swallowed hard. “Why do you care?”

He smiled faintly. “Maybe I like giving people what they want.”

Before she could respond, Mona’s shrill voice cut across the room. “Aria! Back to work!”

She jumped to her feet, cheeks flaming. “I—I should go.”

“Wait,” he said calmly, pulling out a sleek black card and slipping it toward her. “Come to the Royalton. Tonight. Room 807.”

Aria stared at the card like it was a snake. “What… what are you asking?”

His eyes didn’t waver. “One night. No strings. You’ll be well compensated.”

Her heart stopped.

He slid out of the booth, towering over her, and buttoned his jacket. “Think about it.” And just like that, he walked away, leaving her rooted to the spot, clutching a card that suddenly felt heavier than gold.

Jenny appeared seconds later, whisper-screaming. “What the hell did he say?!”

Aria could barely breathe. Her world had just tilted on its axis.

Maya's POV"You're nervous," Liam observed, watching me fidget with my blazer for the third time in five minutes."I'm not nervous. I'm... strategically concerned about first impressions.""You're nervous." He reached over and stilled my hands with his own. "It's adorable.""Adorable is not the look I'm going for on my first day at Peterson & Associates.""What look are you going for?""Competent. Professional. Like someone who definitely didn't get her last job because her boss was secretly in love with her."Liam's expression softened. "Maya, you got that job because you're brilliant. Everything that happened between us was secondary to the fact that you're one of the most talented lawyers I've ever worked with.""You have to say that. You're sleeping with me now.""I'm saying it because it's true. And I was thinking it long before we ever kissed."We were sitting in his car outside the Peterson & Associates building, both of us starting our new jobs this morning. Equal partners, eq

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 53 - Reconnection

Aria's POVEmma had finally settled into a deep sleep after what felt like hours of fussing, and the apartment was blissfully quiet. Three weeks postpartum, and I was just starting to feel like myself again—physically, at least. Emotionally, everything was still new territory.Damien was in the kitchen, cleaning up after dinner with the methodical precision he brought to everything. I watched him from the couch, marveling at how domestic he'd become. Three weeks ago, I would have bet money that Damien Knight had never loaded a dishwasher in his life."She's out?" he asked, noticing my stare."Finally. I think she was testing how long we could function on two hours of sleep."He dried his hands on the kitchen towel and came to sit beside me, close enough that I could smell his cologne mixed with baby powder—a combination that had somehow become incredibly appealing."You look tired," he said, brushing a strand of hair away from my face."Gee, thanks. Every woman loves to hear that.""Y

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 52 - I Love you

Aria's POV"She's Beautiful" Maya said for the dozenth time, cradling Emma against her chest. "Like, unnaturally perfect. Are you sure she's not some kind of baby model?""Pretty sure," I laughed, watching my best friend completely melt over my two-week-old daughter. "Though Damien is convinced she's gifted.""Where is the proud papa, anyway?""Conference call with his lawyer. Apparently Victoria's legal team is trying to claim the recording was obtained illegally.""And?""And Damien's lawyer thinks they're grasping at straws. One-party consent state, she wasn't coerced into saying anything, and everything she said was true." I settled back into the couch, finally feeling relaxed for the first time in weeks. "How are things with Liam?"Maya's face lit up in a way I hadn't seen since before her heartbreak began. "Good. Really good, actually. We start at Peterson & Associates next month.""Together?""As equals. Same title, same pay, same partnership track. No more power dynamics to wo

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 51 - The Truth Comes Out

Maya's POVI was sitting outside the boardroom, waiting for what felt like my execution, when my phone buzzed with a news alert that made me blink twice to make sure I was reading it correctly."BREAKING: Audio Recording Reveals Victoria Ashford's Alleged Harassment Campaign Against Business Associates"My hands shook as I clicked the link. The article included a crystal-clear recording of Victoria's conversation with Damien from that morning—her admission to orchestrating the leak, her threats against my career, her demands for a public apology. But it wasn't just the recording. The article also detailed Victoria's history of using private investigators to dig up dirt on perceived enemies, her pattern of retaliating against anyone who crossed her, and several other instances where careers had been mysteriously derailed after someone had fallen out of her favor."Holy shit," I whispered."Language, Ms. Chen." I looked up to find Liam standing over me, his expression unreadable. But t

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 50 - Dirty Games

Damien's POVVictoria answered her phone on the first ring, as if she'd been waiting for my call."Damien. I was wondering when I'd hear from you.""Call it off.""Call what off?" Her voice was honey-sweet, innocent. The same tone she'd used when denying she'd "accidentally" spilled wine on women she considered competition at charity galas."The smear campaign against Maya Chen. The photos, the leak to the press. All of it.""I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about."I was pacing my penthouse, Emma sleeping peacefully in the portable crib I'd had delivered that morning. Aria was resting in my bedroom—our bedroom, now, though we were still figuring out what that meant."Don't play games with me, Victoria. You're the only person who would have known about Liam's business trip, the only one with both the resources and the motivation to orchestrate this.""And what motivation would that be?""Revenge. You want to hurt me, so you're going after people in my orbit."A pause. When sh

  • Mine for a Night    Chapter 49 - Complications

Maya's POVI knew something was wrong the moment I walked into the office Monday morning. The usual buzz of conversation died as soon as I appeared, and I could feel eyes following me as I made my way to my desk.Jennifer from accounting was the first to approach, her face a mask of barely contained curiosity."Maya, is it true?" she whispered, glancing around to make sure no one was listening."Is what true?""About you and..." She nodded toward Liam's office. "The rumors flying around are insane."My stomach dropped. "What rumors?""That you two were... you know. Involved. And that's why you got promoted so fast."I felt the blood drain from my face. "That's not—""Maya." Liam's voice cut across the office like a blade. "My office. Now."The walk to his office felt like a death march, especially with half the office watching. I stepped inside and closed the door behind me, my hands shaking."Sit down," he said without looking up from his desk.I sat, trying to keep my voice steady.
