Masuk“Hmm…” I make a fake moan as Cade—no, wait, maybe it was Wade—keeps kissing my neck.
His warm breath fans against my skin, and I grab the back of his head, pressing him harder against me, like I’m encouraging him to take full advantage of the opportunity I’ve so generously provided.
But the truth is, I’m already getting bored.
This is supposed to be fun, right? A distraction? Yet, the excitement I’d hoped to find in this fleeting moment is fizzling out.
His kisses are growing more eager, heading somewhere that I’m not planning to let him go. I gently pull away, slipping out of his embrace. His breathing is heavy, his hair disheveled, and I can see the lustful glint in his eyes. He thinks this is going somewhere.
“Shall we continue this at my place?” he offers, a cocky smirk spreading across his lips.
I chuckle. “I have plans tonight—”
Before I can finish, my phone rings. Freesia’s name lights up the screen. Perfect timing.
“Amber, where are you?!” Freesia’s voice is sharp on the other end. “The party is about to start. Please tell me you’re not off seeing some boy again.”
I roll my eyes and adopt my best “responsible” tone. “I’m nearly there, Free! Just trying to focus on the road. Can’t talk and drive, you know.”
“Uh-huh. Just get here, okay? You know I’m counting on you.” She sounds skeptical, but there’s no time to argue as I hang up.
I glance at the man next to me—Cade, Wade, or whoever. “Looks like I have to go.”
His smirk falters. “Can I get your number? Maybe we could meet up again?”
I smile sweetly, turning to face him from the open car door. “There won’t be another time, darling.”
His face falls, but I don’t wait for a response. I’m already sliding into my Porsche, the engine purring as I drive away, leaving him in the dust.
Another momentary distraction, nothing more.
When I arrive at the bar, it’s packed with familiar faces. Freesia knows everyone, and everyone knows her.
The energy in the room is infectious, but I keep my cool as I make my way over to where my friends are lounging on a plush couch.
“Amber, you made it!” Desiree calls out, standing to hug me. Hailey follows, both of them still sober enough to engage in conversation.
Surprising, considering how they usually love to party.
“Sorry I’m late,” I say, offering a smile as I sit down. “Had some… business to take care of.”
“Business?” Desiree raises an eyebrow. “You mean boys, right?”
“Of course she does,” Freesia teases, appearing behind me with her signature grin. “Our Amber is always busy with boys.”
I smile, brushing off their comments. “Happy birthday, Free!” I say, handing her the gift I’d picked out for her earlier. I lean in and kiss her cheek.
“Thank you! It’s such a pleasure that you decided to grace us with your presence tonight,” she jokes, rolling her eyes in exaggerated sarcasm.
“Oh, of course. All for my dear friend,” I reply while matching her playful tone.
“Whatever,” she laughs. “Enjoy the night! I need to go check on the food. I’ll be back later.”
She waves us off as she heads toward the back.
So I did what she said.
I wanted to distract myself from the nagging thoughts that have been plaguing me ever since that day at the cafe.
“You’re trouble, aren’t you?” a voice says close to my ear while I danced at the middle of the dance floor.
I turn and flash the man next to me a smile. He’s attractive enough—tall, dark-haired, and with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“Depends on what you mean by trouble,” I replied.
“You know… a kind that keeps a guy up all night, wondering if he’s made the right move.” He chuckled.
I laugh softly. “Well, I can’t promise you’ll be able to keep up.”
His smile widens as he leans in even closer, “We should put that to the test, Miss….”
I’m about to respond when I feel someone watching me.
For a moment, I brush it off, focusing on the guy in front of me. But the feeling lingers.
I casually glance around, my eyes scanning the room.
And then, I see him.
That guy in the cafe!
He’s sitting in a booth on the other side of the bar while his gaze is locked on me. His expression is unreadable.
He’s not alone—there are a few people around him, laughing and talking—but he’s clearly not paying them any attention.
It’s me he’s watching, and the intensity of his stare sends a shiver down my spine.
What is he doing here? Of all the bars in this city, why this one?
The man in front of me—what’s his name again?—is still talking, but I barely hear him.
My attention is entirely on that guy.
It’s as if the entire room has faded away, leaving just the two of us in a silent standoff.
He doesn’t look away, doesn’t flinch, just keeps watching me with that cold, calculating gaze.
I force myself to turn back to the man in front of me, forcing a smile that feels more strained than before.
“Sorry, what were you saying?”
He raises an eyebrow, so I knew he noticed the shift in my mood.
“I was asking if you wanted to get out of here.”
For a brief second, I consider it.
Leaving with this guy would be the ultimate way to prove to myself that that guy doesn’t have any control over me, that I’m not affected by his presence.
My god, I didn’t even know him! Why is he making me feel this way!
But deep down, I know it’s a lie.
There’s no forgetting him, not tonight.
“I think I’ll pass,” I say, my voice a little softer than before. “But thanks for the offer.”
He looks confused but shrugs it off, giving me a nod before walking away to try his luck elsewhere.
As soon as he’s gone, I feel the weight of that guy’s gaze again.
I turn back toward his booth, and this time, he’s standing.
Slowly, deliberately, he makes his way across the bar, walking through the crowd with that same confident grace he always seems to carry.
What does he want? Why is he here? Does he know Free?
And why do I feel like I’m about to lose control of a game I didn’t even know I was playing?
He stops just a few feet away from me.
His eyes are still locked on mine.
I want to say something, anything, to break the silence, but the words catch in my throat.
“H-Hi….”
Finally, he speaks, “You certainly know how to make an impression, don’t you?”
I raise an eyebrow, trying to keep my composure.
“Was that a compliment or an insult?”
“An observation.”
I fold my arms across my chest while leaning back against the bar for support.
“Who are you? What are you doing here?”
“Same as you, I suppose,” he replies smoothly.
For a moment, it feels like the entire bar has gone quiet.
There’s something in his gaze that unsettles me, something that feels dangerous.
“Well,” I say, forcing a confident smile, “I hope you find what you’re looking for.”
His eyes narrow slightly. He nods once and steps back.
“Enjoy your night… whoever you are,” he says, his voice cool and polite, as if this encounter had meant nothing.
What the fuck? “Whoever you are”?! Who the hell says that?
But as he turns and walks away, I know better.
This isn’t over… not by a long shot.
And the worst part? I’m not sure I want it to be.
“Did he really say that?!” Freesia exclaimed, her face crimson, as she was trying to suppress her laughter. My smile faded as I remembered what happened the night before.“Yes! It caught me off guard as well. Did I look bad last night?” I asked in astonishment.Freesia and I are currently in a coffee shop, where we decided to have a cup of coffee. It was already afternoon when we decided to stop by because we also woke up late due to a hangover.Desiree couldn’t join us because she had plans with her family, and Hailey is probably still sleeping because of all the alcohol she drank last night.“Well, Flavian has been like that ever since. Intimidating and aloof. And last night wasn’t the best time for you to be interested in him.” She replied. My brow furrowed in perplexity, “Why?”“Well, I just found out he broke up with his girlfriend.” She said as she sipped her coffee.“He’s got a girlfriend?” I asked in disbelief. I mean, he’s got good looks, but I didn’t think he could be in a r
The girls and I settle into the couch, making ourselves comfortable. I couldn’t stop glancing around the bar, hoping to catch sight of that guy from earlier…the one who made me feel things I wasn’t sure I wanted to feel. But he had vanished after our little conversation. Disappeared into the crowd without a trace.“I heard Free’s cousins are coming tonight,” Desiree says casually as she picks at an appetizer from our table.I raise an eyebrow, trying to focus on the conversation and not on my wandering thoughts. “Really? I didn’t know she was close with her paternal side,” I comment, taking a sip of my drink. “I always see her with her cousins from Aunt Fatima’s side, like Natasha.”“Well, apparently, they’re more focused on business. You know, the serious, no-nonsense types.”“Oh, so they’re boys?” Hailey chimes in.“If they are, I bet they’re middle-aged with wrinkles from sitting in an office all day,” I joke, making the girls laugh. But before I can continue with another joke, I h

The café buzzes around me—laughter, the clinking of plates, whispers that are just loud enough to be heard. Eyes are on me, like always, but I’ve mastered the art of pretending not to notice. They watch, they whisper, but none of them know me.I look at the expensive watch on my wrist. That Marcus is already five minutes late. How dare he make me wait!“If he doesn’t show up in a minute, I’ll leave.” I whispered to myself. If it wasn’t just my father wanting me to try to date that guy who is his business partner’s son, I wouldn’t be here. The door chimes, and I glance up just in time to see Marcus approaching. He’s handsome, I’ll give him that. Tall, sharp features, and dressed in a formal attire. He looks like he’s stepped out of a high-end magazine, exactly the type my parents would approve of.But as soon as he sits down, I can feel the weight of his arrogance pressing on me. His smile is too easy, too practiced, and I already know how this is going to go.“Amber, right?” Marcus
