"This is unacceptable! How did this happen?!" angrily asked Don Fernan Sarmiento. He stood up from his chair and slammed the table hard. He was the owner of the most renowned shipping company in the entire country. He had just received news that his trusted vice president had flown to another country with a large sum of money from their company.

Everyone in the room fell silent and immediately turned their heads. They couldn't meet the intense gaze of the furious gentleman. They were in the middle of a meeting when an executive of the company suddenly entered to deliver the news.

"W-We learned that he created a g-ghost company abroad. He sends the funds he acquires from the company there. H-He used fake accounts--"

"Shut up!" Don Fernan interrupted. He threw the folders in front of him. He took deep breaths and tried to calm himself. He held his chest and sat back down. "Get out," he said softly.

The board members exchanged glances and hesitated to move immediately. But when Don Fernan gave them a menacing look, they quickly made their way out of the room. That's when Donya Paulina Sarmiento, Don Fernan's wife, entered the scene. She noticed her husband struggling to catch his breath in his chair.

"Fernan!" Paulina hurriedly approached Fernan. When she saw him pale, she quickly grabbed some water and prepared to give it to him. But Fernan let out a loud groan. "My God! Please help us! Don!" Paulina screamed, tears streaming down her face, as she embraced her husband who had a heart attack.

A group of men entered the room. They were Fernan's men. They helped carry Fernan to the hospital.

Paulina prayed fervently while they were in the hospital, waiting for the doctor currently operating on Fernan. He had suffered a heart attack due to intense emotions. Fortunately, he was immediately rushed to the hospital. Their eldest daughter arrived at the hospital shortly after to find out what had happened to her father.

"What happened to Papa, Mama?" Liza, their eldest daughter, asked anxiously. At twenty-five years old, she was already a famous model. Just by her posture, many admired her. It was undeniable that Sarmiento's eldest daughter was a beautiful woman.

"I don't know yet, Liza. I just saw him having an attack in their meeting room."

Liza sighed and hugged her mother, who was crying uncontrollably. "Don't worry, Mama. Papa is a strong man."

"He better be. I don't know what I'll do if your father is gone."

"Papa! Where's Papa? What happened to Papa?" Lirah, their youngest daughter, rushed in, panting. Unlike Liza, Lirah was a quiet child of Paulina and Fernan. She didn't like mingling with people. She preferred spending time with her plants and the animals she took care of. But among their siblings, Lirah was the one who appreciated beauty the most. She may not enjoy dressing up like her sister, but she had a keen eye for it.

Liza arched an eyebrow and faced her sister. "Why are you here just now, Lirah? And what is that smell? Did you even wash yourself before coming here?" she asked disdainfully. She even covered her nose due to the unpleasant odor coming from Lirah.

Lirah paused. "I'm sorry, sis. Chuchay just gave birth."

Liza rolled her eyes. She was about to say something but the door to the operating room opened, and the doctor came out. He immediately informed them that the operation had been.

However, Fernan was currently in a coma, so they couldn't say for certain that he was safe yet.

"Oh my God, Fernan!" Paulina cried.

"We're preparing Don Fernan's room now."

"Alright, doc. Thank you."

"Liza, what should we do? Your papa! I can't lose your papa!"

"D-Don't worry, Mama. We will make sure that he will recover."

Lirah bowed her head and quietly cried. She couldn't contain the overwhelming worry she felt for her father. She couldn't bear any harm coming to him.

Don Fernan was taken to his private room. Paulina felt even more pity and anxiety when she saw the state of her beloved husband. She lost count of how many machines were attached to his body. The sound of a machine monitoring his heartbeat was deafening. It felt like each beat of his heart was also quickening her own heartbeat.

The siblings decided not to enter the room yet and spoke to Don Fernan's secretary to find out what had happened.

"A large amount was lost from your company, Miss Liza. And it will be difficult to recover it until you catch the thief," said George.

"That's probably why Papa had a heart attack," Lirah said sadly. She bowed her head and bit her lip. She felt deep sympathy for her father. He loved their company dearly.

"What is the board doing about it? Have they caught him?"

"Sadly, no. But we have filed a case, and we have also reported it to the National Bureau of Investigation. But you need to think of something to fill the gap in your company. Otherwise, it might be lost."

Liza exhaled heavily. She nodded. As the eldest, she knew she had to temporarily take her father's place. She was also sure that her mother wouldn't be able to stand as the company's chairman because she was deeply hurt by what happened to their father.

"Okay, George. Thank you very much."

George nodded at them and took his leave.

"Now, what are we going to do, sis?"

Liza raised an eyebrow and faced her sister. "What are we going to do? You. Go home first and clean yourself up. You don't know anything about running a business because you're too busy with your pets!"

Lirah froze. With teary eyes, she looked at her older sister. Unbeknownst to many, Liza and Paulina didn't treat Lirah well. They treated her as if she wasn't their own family. Lirah couldn't understand why, despite her efforts to be a good daughter and sister. Her only ally in their home was her father. That's why she was crying so much out of excessive worry.

"I-I just wanted to help, sis."

"Then go home! You stink, Lirah. Do you want Mama to have an attack because of your smell?"

Lirah bowed her head and finally burst into tears. She quietly nodded and turned away from her sister. She peeked at her father through the door of his room.

"Dad, I'll come back. Please, wake up."

"Lirah! What else are you waiting for?" Liza asked irritably.

Lirah didn't respond and walked away from the room. She wanted to go in and watch over her father, but her current smell wasn't pleasant at all. Everyone she encountered avoided her. All Lirah wished for was her father's speedy recovery.

“You’ve been quiet for a while. Is something bothering you?”Lirah was taken aback when she heard Matias’ voice. She cleared her throat and adjusted her sitting position. Matias moved closer and she closed the book she was reading.“Why haven’t you slept yet? You have an early day tomorrow, don’t you?” she asked in return.Matias shrugged. “I’m not sleepy yet.”“You shouldn’t have followed me here. You might not be used to sleeping in this bed.”Matias smiled. “It’s fine.” He leaned back. “The night here is beautiful.”Lirah furrowed her brows. “Huh? Yes, because the air is still fresh?”“Because it’s so peaceful at night. Unlike in the city. Here, even in complete darkness, you don’t feel scared.”Lirah glanced around. Only the lights from their hacienda and a few animal pens provided illumination. Apart from that, all she could see was the darkness of the night. It was very quiet too, which was why Lirah chose this time to read.“You’re right about that.” Lirah took a deep breath.“

“It looks like I don’t need to talk to your Godfather anymore, Daughter,” Don Fernan said playfully.Lirah paused in arranging the food on the small table. She looked at her father, who was smiling broadly as he gazed downstairs at Matias, currently feeding the dogs. Since Don Fernan couldn’t move around yet, Lirah brought his food to his room. He preferred to eat on the terrace, where he could oversee most of their hacienda.“Why, Papa? What will you say to Ninong?”“Matias seems happy. I’ve never seen him like this before.”“Huh? How can you tell? He just seems to want to cause trouble. He just doesn’t like cooking for himself.” Lirah frowned.Don Fernan chuckled. “Matias is an unusual boy, my dear. Among all of your Godfather’s children, he’s the only one who keeps his distance from people. But he’s very obedient. I rarely saw him before, and whenever I did, he was quiet and scowling.”“I noticed that too. I didn’t recognize him when I first saw him.” Lirah sat across from Don Fern

“I hope everything is okay with my daughter, Matias,” Don Fernan said to Matias. They were left alone in the room. Lirah had escorted Paulina out of the hospital, as they were going home to rest.Matias smiled. “Yes, Uncle. Don’t worry. I will take care of your daughter.”Don Fernan sighed. “I still can’t believe that you two got married. But I trust you. I know that you’re a good child, Matias. My only wish is for you not to hurt my daughter. She knows nothing about these things. She grew up in the hacienda, and her whole life has been focused there.”“I see that you are worried about her. I promise, Uncle, I will take care of her.”“Thank you. But I have a question, why did you agree to marry her?”Matias’ smile disappeared. He looked away and let out a soft breath of air. “I don’t really have a choice. You know, Dad.”Don Fernan nodded understandingly. He was well aware of Matias’ situation, and that was what concerned him the most. He knew Matias was a good person. He had witnesse

“Why did you do that, Paulina?” Don Fernan asked his wife. They were left alone in the room. He still couldn’t believe that his wife had arranged for their youngest daughter to get married. She was still too young to have her own family.“I did it because we needed the money, Fernan. Wasn’t it the right thing to do?” Donya Paulina replied.Don Fernan took a deep breath. “You married off Lirah! That was wrong!”Donya Paulina gasped. “Why does it feel like I’m the one to blame for this? I only did what I thought would help our family, right? You’re only angry because Lirah is the one who got married. Why do you always side with her? Aren’t they both your children?! Would you react the same way if it were Liza who got married?” she asked, tears welling up in her eyes.Fernan exhaled forcefully. He placed a hand on his chest, feeling as if a heavy burden had suddenly been placed on it. Paulina quickly panicked and approached her husband.“Sorry. Do you feel any pain? Should I call the doc

“What are you doing here?” Lirah asked Matias curiously. He was lying on her bed as if it were his own. “Didn’t Nanay Myrna give you a separate room?”“She did. Here. She said that since we’re married, we should share a room,” Matias replied.“Is that so?” Lirah raised an eyebrow. She crossed her arms and observed her husband intently. She wasn’t sure why he suddenly had this idea. They had barely spent a few minutes apart.“Come here,” Matias said.“I’m not going to lie next to you, you know?”“Lirah, I just want to talk with you. I’ll leave after we’re done.”Lirah arched her eyebrow. She hesitated for a moment before she reluctantly moved to sit on the sofa at the end of her bed. “Okay, but I’m fine here. What is it?”Matias sighed and looked at her. He gave her a small smile. “I know our relationship didn’t start like others, it was an arranged marriage. But I thought, why don’t we try to make it work?”“What do you mean?”Matias pointed at both of them. “Us. As husband and wife.

“Thank you very much for the unwavering support!”“I’ve been looking for you for a while now. You’re just here.”Lirah looked back. There was Matias, peering at her from outside the pig pen. His forehead wrinkled, and he had his hand slightly covering his nose.“Sorry. I heard Chuchay crying,” she replied. Lirah continued to look at the piglets.“Chuchay?”Lirah nodded and pointed to the nursing sow. “That’s Chuchay. And these are her piglets.”Matias furrowed his brow even more. He couldn’t believe the pig had a name. He shook his head, and his eyes caught sight of something red tied around one of the pig’s feet. He had seen other animals with red strings tied around their feet before, but he didn’t pay much attention to it.“Why were you looking for me?”“I’m hungry.”Lirah raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t we just have dinner?”“Yes, but I’m hungry again. So, finish that already. I want to be full before I go to sleep.”Lirah was left dumbfounded. She turned to face Matias, but he was alr
