ANMELDEN“This will be our house,” Matias said as they entered a large home.
Lirah couldn’t help but marvel as they stepped inside the two-story house. Their mansion in the hacienda was big as well, but it wasn’t as modern as this one. The design here was simple yet elegant in her eyes, with its black and gray color scheme. It was far from her favorite color, yellow, but she found it beautiful nonetheless. The first floor was a studio-type setup. From the living room, one could immediately see the kitchen with a counter blocking the way. In front of it was a long table that could accommodate eight people. On the side of the living room was the only staircase leading to the second floor.
“Can’t I just go back to the hacienda?” Lirah asked. She positioned herself behind the long sofa while Matias sat on one of the chairs by the dining table.
Matias chuckled slightly. “No, you can’t. I hate to admit it, but we’re married now, and we need to live under one roof.”
Lirah sighed. “Okay.” If she had a choice, she’d prefer staying in the hacienda rather than this beautiful house.
“House rules. I don’t care what you do, whether you leave the house in the morning, go ahead. But I want you to come home every night. I want you to be here when I come home.”
Lirah raised an eyebrow and faced Matias. “So, I can go to the hacienda?”
“Yes. Just come home. I don’t want our families to say anything. We need to act like a married couple.”
“Why? You seem to dislike this marriage too. So why did you agree to it?”
Matias avoided eye contact. “It’s none of your business.”
“How rude.” Lirah rolled her eyes and turned away from him.
Matias shook his head. “Our bedrooms are upstairs. The master’s bedroom is mine. Yours is the one across from it.”
“We’ll have separate rooms?”
“Yes. Why?”
Lirah shrugged. “Aren’t married couples supposed to share a room?”
Matias paused for a moment. He was starting to feel a headache from Lirah’s questions. It seemed like she knew nothing about these things or couldn’t understand what he wanted to convey. He grinned and took a step closer to Lirah, stopping behind her. He couldn’t help but compliment her because she smelled nice, like her dama’s scent. It was as if she sensed his presence and suddenly turned to face him. Her eyes widened, and she quickly stepped back. Thankfully, he caught her by the waist before she fell.
“W-What are you doing?” the girl asked, frightened.
Matias grinned even wider. “Do you want to share the same room? I’d be willing to share a bed with you. But are you willing to share yours with me?” he asked meaningfully, glancing at her chest.
Lirah’s eyes widened even more. She gasped in shock and quickly pushed Matias away. “Pervert! Hey! Just because we’re married doesn’t mean I’ll allow you to—” She stopped abruptly, realizing that she had never done that with any man before. She hadn’t even kissed anyone, and yet this man just stole a kiss from her.
Matias grinned even more. “What? Can’t you say it?”
Her face flushed with embarrassment. She was used to discussing these matters with Kiray, but with anyone else, especially a man, she couldn’t bring herself to talk about it.
“Pervert!” Lirah yelled and quickly ran upstairs to the second floor. She saw three rooms there and rushed into the one with a large door close to her. She froze when she saw that the interior was the same black and gray color scheme as the outside. Even the copper bed was in the same gray color. But Lirah didn’t mind. She quickly lay on the bed and covered herself with the blanket.
Matias was left behind, shaking his head in amusement at the girl’s behavior. She acted like an innocent child, unaware of the world around her. But his smile disappeared when he realized he was smiling. He quickly shook his head and walked towards the second floor. He entered his room, the largest among the three, as it was the master’s bedroom. All their belongings were already there, making it easy for him to settle in.
Matias removed his necktie and started undressing. However, he was interrupted when the bed suddenly moved, and Lirah stood up from it. He was stunned as he stared at her.
“What are you doing here?!” they both asked at the same time.
Lirah’s eyes widened, and she immediately averted her gaze from Matias’ body. But when she looked down at his stomach, which had a six-pack, she let out a scream, “Ah! Pervert! Pervert! Pervert!” She quickly covered herself with the blanket, her face turning red with embarrassment.
Matias also looked at his own body and realized he was naked as he was heading to the bathroom. He quickly grabbed his discarded clothes and covered himself.
“What are you doing here? Your room is on the other side!” Lirah exclaimed, trying to control her embarrassment.
Lirah froze, barely able to scream in shame. She prayed that the bed would swallow her up as she lay there.
“I-I didn’t know! But why are you naked?”
“This is my room! What do you expect?!”
“Fine! I’ll leave! But go to the bathroom!” Lirah said, flustered.
Matias sighed in exasperation. He didn’t know what to do with his wife. “Okay. Go out as soon as I enter the bathroom.” He walked towards the bathroom, still covering his body with his clothes. But he stopped near the bathroom when he looked at Lirah. He suddenly grinned broadly.
“A-Are you still there?” Lirah asked.
Matias didn’t answer. Instead, he dropped the clothes covering him and slowly got on the bed.
“Should we share this room instead? After all, we’re married, right?” Matias whispered to Lirah.
Lirah’s entire body went cold when she felt Matias’ warm breath. She quickly removed the blanket from her body. In her hasty movement, she accidentally hit Matias on the cheek. She didn’t respond and quickly ran out of the room, locking the door behind her. She entered the adjacent room and locked it as well. There, she felt like she entered a different world. If the other room was all black and gray, this one was all yellow, her favorite color. She blushed with embarrassment and muttered, “Embarrassing! Annoying!”
In the other room, Matias was left rubbing his nose, which Lirah accidentally hit. He smiled broadly. “What kind of woman is she?” he asked himself in disbelief. Shaking his head, he got off the bed. “This will be fun.”
“Oh my gosh! This place is so beautiful!” Kiray exclaimed.Lirah could only smile as she watched her friend. Kiray ran towards the beach and immediately took a selfie. Lirah shook her head.“This is Kiray,” she whispered. She looked at Matias, who was talking to the receptionist about their room. She hadn’t realized that their honeymoon meant a vacation together. She was surprised at first and scolded him, but they ended up here at a private resort in Palawan.“Thank you.”Lirah quickly looked outside when Matias turned to face her. “Are you ready?”“Yes. Where’s Kiray?”“There she is. Taking selfies again.” He pointed to their friend. “Let me call her.”“Okay. I’ll wait for you here.”Lirah walked closer to her friend. “Kiray, come on! Let’s go to our room.”“Just a moment, bessy! Come here, let’s take a picture!”“Huh? I don’t want to.”Kiray suddenly pulled Lirah. She had no choice but to comply. She gave a small smile while looking at Kiray’s cellphone.“There! Upload it! You’re s
“You’ve been quiet for a while. Is something bothering you?”Lirah was taken aback when she heard Matias’ voice. She cleared her throat and adjusted her sitting position. Matias moved closer and she closed the book she was reading.“Why haven’t you slept yet? You have an early day tomorrow, don’t you?” she asked in return.Matias shrugged. “I’m not sleepy yet.”“You shouldn’t have followed me here. You might not be used to sleeping in this bed.”Matias smiled. “It’s fine.” He leaned back. “The night here is beautiful.”Lirah furrowed her brows. “Huh? Yes, because the air is still fresh?”“Because it’s so peaceful at night. Unlike in the city. Here, even in complete darkness, you don’t feel scared.”Lirah glanced around. Only the lights from their hacienda and a few animal pens provided illumination. Apart from that, all she could see was the darkness of the night. It was very quiet too, which was why Lirah chose this time to read.“You’re right about that.” Lirah took a deep breath.“
“It looks like I don’t need to talk to your Godfather anymore, Daughter,” Don Fernan said playfully.Lirah paused in arranging the food on the small table. She looked at her father, who was smiling broadly as he gazed downstairs at Matias, currently feeding the dogs. Since Don Fernan couldn’t move around yet, Lirah brought his food to his room. He preferred to eat on the terrace, where he could oversee most of their hacienda.“Why, Papa? What will you say to Ninong?”“Matias seems happy. I’ve never seen him like this before.”“Huh? How can you tell? He just seems to want to cause trouble. He just doesn’t like cooking for himself.” Lirah frowned.Don Fernan chuckled. “Matias is an unusual boy, my dear. Among all of your Godfather’s children, he’s the only one who keeps his distance from people. But he’s very obedient. I rarely saw him before, and whenever I did, he was quiet and scowling.”“I noticed that too. I didn’t recognize him when I first saw him.” Lirah sat across from Don Fern
“I hope everything is okay with my daughter, Matias,” Don Fernan said to Matias. They were left alone in the room. Lirah had escorted Paulina out of the hospital, as they were going home to rest.Matias smiled. “Yes, Uncle. Don’t worry. I will take care of your daughter.”Don Fernan sighed. “I still can’t believe that you two got married. But I trust you. I know that you’re a good child, Matias. My only wish is for you not to hurt my daughter. She knows nothing about these things. She grew up in the hacienda, and her whole life has been focused there.”“I see that you are worried about her. I promise, Uncle, I will take care of her.”“Thank you. But I have a question, why did you agree to marry her?”Matias’ smile disappeared. He looked away and let out a soft breath of air. “I don’t really have a choice. You know, Dad.”Don Fernan nodded understandingly. He was well aware of Matias’ situation, and that was what concerned him the most. He knew Matias was a good person. He had witnesse
“Why did you do that, Paulina?” Don Fernan asked his wife. They were left alone in the room. He still couldn’t believe that his wife had arranged for their youngest daughter to get married. She was still too young to have her own family.“I did it because we needed the money, Fernan. Wasn’t it the right thing to do?” Donya Paulina replied.Don Fernan took a deep breath. “You married off Lirah! That was wrong!”Donya Paulina gasped. “Why does it feel like I’m the one to blame for this? I only did what I thought would help our family, right? You’re only angry because Lirah is the one who got married. Why do you always side with her? Aren’t they both your children?! Would you react the same way if it were Liza who got married?” she asked, tears welling up in her eyes.Fernan exhaled forcefully. He placed a hand on his chest, feeling as if a heavy burden had suddenly been placed on it. Paulina quickly panicked and approached her husband.“Sorry. Do you feel any pain? Should I call the doc
“What are you doing here?” Lirah asked Matias curiously. He was lying on her bed as if it were his own. “Didn’t Nanay Myrna give you a separate room?”“She did. Here. She said that since we’re married, we should share a room,” Matias replied.“Is that so?” Lirah raised an eyebrow. She crossed her arms and observed her husband intently. She wasn’t sure why he suddenly had this idea. They had barely spent a few minutes apart.“Come here,” Matias said.“I’m not going to lie next to you, you know?”“Lirah, I just want to talk with you. I’ll leave after we’re done.”Lirah arched her eyebrow. She hesitated for a moment before she reluctantly moved to sit on the sofa at the end of her bed. “Okay, but I’m fine here. What is it?”Matias sighed and looked at her. He gave her a small smile. “I know our relationship didn’t start like others, it was an arranged marriage. But I thought, why don’t we try to make it work?”“What do you mean?”Matias pointed at both of them. “Us. As husband and wife.
