Cold Snow Moon

Chapter 1

Cold Snow Moon
"So, you're the distant relative Brandon mentioned?"

Janice Swanson looked me up and down, her eyes brimming with undisguised disgust.

I glanced down at my clothes. To avoid burdening my son with the high-pressure stereotype of a billionaire heir, I had deliberately chosen my least conspicuous beige linen set.

Woven entirely by hand without a logo, this ensemble cost twice as much as the current-season haute couture Janice was sporting.

In my hands, I carried a thermos of chicken soup that my husband had woken up at dawn to simmer for three hours.

"I'm here to see Brandon," I said casually, waving a hand.

Janice sneered, then turned toward the camera setup that was already recording, instantly flashing a sweet, adorable smile.

"Hey, guys! Let me introduce you. This is a distant 'relative' of Brandon's family. He told me she's been living out in the countryside, but money's been a little tight lately, so she came to town to stay with us."

The stream's live chat went wild with comments.

[My goodness, the classic poor relative? Her vibe is awful.]

[Janice is so sweet and kind to even let someone like her on camera.]

[Look at that thermos. The paint is peeling off. What kind of slop is inside? How does she have the nerve to give that to Brandon?]

[That wrinkled outfit looks like it came from a clearance rack. How does Brandon have a relative like this? Talk about embarrassing.]

...

I frowned.

Was this really how my son, Brandon Castillo, introduced me to his girlfriend? A distant relative? Living in the countryside?

Fabulous!

"Ms. Swanson, I think you've misunderstood," I said calmly, trying to avoid a public scene on camera since she was Brandon's girlfriend after all. "I'm not here looking for a handout. I came to drop off some soup for Brandon."

"Drop off soup?" Janice dramatically pinched her nose and took a half-step back. "Lady, I know you want to suck up to Brandon so he'll give you a bigger allowance.

"But he has very refined tastes. He can't drink stuff from who-knows-where. What if it gives him food poisoning and ruins his afternoon shoot? Can you even afford the damage?"

My polite smile faded. "Brandon knows best whether this soup is clean or not. Have him come out to meet me."

"He is busy." Janice waved her hand impatiently.

"Lady, have some self-awareness. Brandon is the successor to the Castillo Group, worth billions. And you are just a penniless relative who can't even afford decent clothes. If it weren't for his sake, security would have kicked you out long ago."

She leaned close to my ear and whispered, "Listen, old hag. Don't throw my generosity back in my face. We're broadcasting live.

"If you dare say anything stupid to ruin my persona, I'll make sure you can't survive in Oatharmere. If you know what's good for you, leave the soup and beat it with this $500."

She pulled a few bills from her purse and slapped them down on top of my thermos. They slid off almost immediately, fluttering onto the dusty floor.

I stared at the money and laughed in disbelief. "500 dollars?"

I was worth billions and held sixty percent of the voting shares in the Castillo Group. Yet here I was, being insulted with money.

"Not enough for you?" Disgust flashed in Janice's eyes, though she put on a helpless act for the camera. "Guys, did you see it?

"I kindly tried to give her some travel money, but she turned her nose up at it. This is exactly why I hate dealing with needy relatives. They're just hopelessly greedy."

The chat blew up even more fiercely.

[What the hell? $500 isn't enough? This old lady is so greedy.]

[Ignore her, Janice. People like her are just bloodsucking parasites.]

[Where is security? Why haven't they thrown her out yet? She makes me sick.]

[Poverty breeds greed while wealth breeds grace—the old saying never fails.]

...

I took a deep breath, suppressing the fury in my chest.

"You will regret what you did today," I said.

Janice looked at me as if she had just heard the funniest joke in the world. "Regret? Lady, did living in the middle of nowhere rot your brain? In this industry, capital is power.

"I am a top-tier star, and Brandon Castillo is my boyfriend. You? Just a penniless beggar. What could you do to make me regret anything?"

Her eyes shifted as if an even bigger gossip topic struck her, and she spoke mysteriously into the camera. "Speaking of which, there's even juicier gossip.

"I wonder if everyone remembers that blurry paparazzi video from a while back. The one about Mr. Castillo keeping a mistress on the side?"

My eyelids twitched. "Mr. Castillo? Richard Castillo?"

When we went on vacation to a private island a while ago, we were indeed snapped by paparazzi, though I had my team suppress the story.

How did I become a mistress in her mouth?

"That's right!" Janice pointed at me, her tone absolute. "Take a close look, everyone. Even though she's dressed like trash, doesn't her build look identical to that of the woman in that video?

"Word has it she tried to seduce Mr. Castillo back in the day, relying on her looks. But once Mr. Castillo got tired of her, he dumped her and sent her back to the boondocks. Now that she sees Brandon doing so well, she's crawled back to leech off him."

Once the storm had passed, life gradually settled back into its usual rhythm.Brandon changed more than I ever expected. He cut off his silver-dyed hair and returned it to its natural blond, stopped hanging around with people who were only interested in chasing fame and attention, and lost whatever fascination he'd once had with the superficial world of celebrity.Instead, he started going to work with Richard every day, beginning at the bottom as a junior project coordinator at the Castillo Group. He still made mistakes, of course, and Richard occasionally tore into him for them, but Brandon never complained. He took every criticism in stride and worked twice as hard to make up for his mistakes. One evening, the three of us finally sat down to a quiet family dinner. In the middle of the table sat a steaming pot of chicken soup that I'd spent hours preparing.Brandon ladled some into a bowl and carefully carried it over to me with both hands. "Mom, have some soup."I accepted the

I paused. "Evidence?"Brandon nodded and pulled a small black device from the pocket of his hoodie. It turned out to be a digital voice recorder."I carry this around all the time," he explained. "I started doing it because I like recording song ideas whenever inspiration hits. I left it running in the green room yesterday, so it captured everything—the way she insulted you, the fake fall, and even the way she threatened me."I looked at my normally scatterbrained son, and for the first time in days, I felt a little relieved. At least, he wasn't entirely hopeless."Good." I took the recorder and patted his shoulder. "Then you'll be the one to clean up the mess you made."...That afternoon, the Castillo Group held an emergency press conference.Brandon attended in person. His hair was still dyed silver, but the careless arrogance he'd once carried had disappeared.Standing in front of a room packed with reporters and flashing cameras, he looked calm and composed."Regarding th

Janice had been dragged out of the room, but the fallout was only beginning. The livestream had been cut off the moment the bodyguards barged in, yet the controversy was already spreading across social media like wildfire.Within hours, hashtags such as #TheRealMrsCastillo, #JaniceSwansonBlacklisted, #BillionaireMistressExposed, and #BrandonCastilloDisowned were dominating the trending lists.Once people started digging, they uncovered one scandal after another from Janice's past—her diva behavior, her habit of bullying newcomers, and rumors that she'd slept her way to the top.The moment she fell from grace, the same fans who had once worshiped her were among the first to turn on her and trample her into the dirt.Richard and I rode home in the back of the car, while Brandon had been sent ahead in a separate vehicle with only a driver to escort him.Richard held my hand throughout the drive, his palm warm and slightly clammy."I'm so sorry you had to deal with that, sweetheart,

Janice sat on the floor, covered in grease. Her carefully maintained image had been totally ruined. She was reduced to a laughingstock, deeply humiliated.Frantically wiping the soup from her face, she looked past me at Brandon, who was still sitting nearby in a daze."Brandon... help me..." She reached for the hem of his hoodie, her voice trembling with desperation. "We've been together for so long. You can't just stand there and watch them destroy me."Go talk to your mother. Talk to your father. I only did this because I love you. I was trying to protect your reputation."Brandon remained stiff. Listening to her sobs, he clenched his fists until his knuckles cracked. Then he looked up at me with a tangled mix of guilt, fear, and reluctance. He genuinely cared about Janice, no matter how foolish or malicious she had been. Seeing her in such a pathetic state still made his heart ache."Mom..." His voice was hoarse."Janice was wrong, but do you really have to blacklist her? Th

The entire room fell silent.Even the live chat, which had been scrolling nonstop only moments earlier, suddenly went still.Janice remained on the floor with tears streaking her face, staring at Brandon as though he'd just told her the world was ending."B-Brandon... what did you just call her?" she stammered, her voice shaking with disbelief.Brandon didn't dare meet her eyes.He kept his head bowed as he spoke in a strained whisper. "Mom, why didn't you tell me you were coming? I would have picked you up from the airport."I gave a cold laugh and ignored him, walking over to the leather sofa and sitting down."If I hadn't shown up unannounced, how would I have known that your girlfriend thinks I'm some washed-up mistress your father discarded?"Cold sweat trickled down the back of Brandon's neck."Mom, it's a misunderstanding," he muttered, taking a cautious step toward me. "Janice didn't know who you were. She just thought...""That I was some poor relative looking for a

"What did you say?" I demanded, exasperated.Richard and I had built our empire from scratch. We had been married for 25 years with a rock-solid relationship. How had I suddenly become a mistress who seduced her way to the top?"Am I wrong?" Janice snorted, full of righteous indignation. She pulled out her phone, opened a blurry photo, and held it up to the camera. In the picture, Richard and I were taking a stroll along the beach. Although our faces weren't clear, the woman's silhouette was undeniably mine."Look, everyone. She might have changed her clothes, but she can't mask that penniless, low-class vibe. Who is Mr. Castillo? He's the president of a corporate empire."The real Mrs. Castillo is an old-money socialite who lives abroad supervising their children's education. She is noble, elegant, and sophisticated. Only a shameless woman like this would dress like a beggar and run over to cause a scene in front of her son."The stream's live chat erupted into a frenzy.[Hard
