The air was growing thinner by the second, and I began to kick at the walls of the suitcase with everything I had.

The lock didn't budge at all, letting out only a cold, metallic click in the silence of the room.

Just then, the door was pushed open, and I heard hurried footsteps rushing in. In that instant, hope surged through me.

Mom and Dad heard me. They came to save me.

But the next second, Mom's voice sounded, laced with irritation, "This is all Ninette's fault. We exchanged all our cash for foreign currency just to take her abroad, and now we don't even have enough left for Amy's medical bills!"

A sharp, jarring crack rang out.

I didn't even need to see it to know what had happened.

It was my ceramic piggy bank with the little white rabbit on it, the one I had carefully saved for three years.

Mom sounded relieved. "Good. There's still quite a bit here."

"How did she save up so much?" Dad asked in surprise.

"Save?" Mom sneered. "She must've stolen Amy's allowance. I knew I wasn't wrong about her today!"

Dad sighed. "How did Ninette turn out like this? I always thought she'd grow up to be a good sister."

I heard the rustling of coins and the crinkle of a few loose bills being swept up.

As the door shut, I felt an icy gaze bore into the suitcase.

"Stay in there and think about what you've done," Mom said, her tone frigid. "If you can't learn how to be a good sister, then get out of this house!"

No…

That money wasn't stolen. I had saved it one bit at a time by skipping breakfast because I wanted to buy my sister, Amelia Orson, a birthday gift.

I wanted to scream and defend myself, but my oxygen-deprived throat could only produce a faint, rattling wheeze.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I got out of the suitcase.

At that moment, the door swung open once more. Mom and Dad walked in, talking and laughing, and it looked like Amelia was fine now.

The tension in my chest finally eased.

I rushed forward, wanting to hug Mom and cling to her the way I used to, but my arms passed right through her.

They went to the couch and started discussing the itinerary.

I stood in front of them, waving my hands and shouting, "Mom, Dad, I'm over here!"

Their gazes passed through me and landed on each other.

Dad frowned as he spoke, "The cancellation fee is half the ticket price. It's such a waste of money."

Amelia immediately wrapped her arms around Mom. "I'm better now! I don't want you guys to waste money. I can go on the trip!"

Mom nuzzled her forehead against Amelia's affectionately. "My sweet girl, you're so much better than your sister."

I froze, then turned to Dad and begged, "Dad, can you take me with you? I know I messed up…"

At that moment, Dad looked toward the storage room door and said hesitantly, "Maybe we should bring Ninette along, too. She's just a kid. The punishment we gave her is enough. Besides, didn't she use to be your favorite? You often say a girl needs to travel and see the world."

My heart leaped, and a tiny spark of hope flickered to life.

Alas, Mom took the phone from his hand, her voice firm. "We're not taking her! What's the use of good grades if she's so twisted? This time, we have to teach her a lesson she'll never forget!"

Her fingers moved quickly across the screen, and without hesitation, she canceled my ticket.

I stood there, my transparent figure unmoving.

I watched Dad nod in agreement, and Amelia lean against them, receiving all their love and attention.

Only then did I understand that from the moment they locked the suitcase, Ninette Orson had already been completely erased from this family.

"We're from the police—"Mom interrupted gently, "We know."She even made a gesture as if to welcome them in, but the officer held up an arrest warrant. "That won't be necessary."I watched as the handcuffs clicked shut around Mom's slender wrists, the same hands that once braided my hair so gently.Dad extended his hands on his own, even adjusting his collar as he said calmly, "I'll go with you."As Mom was being led out, she suddenly turned back. "Officer, can I bring a jacket for my daughter? She doesn't like the cold."She pointed toward the empty couch, but I wasn't there anymore, and I hadn't been for a long time. The officer shook his head silently.I watched as they were taken into the patrol car.Mom kept looking toward the house, but the window slowly rolled up, cutting off her line of sight. Dad gave the living room one last look, as that was where my laughter used to echo. When the patrol car started moving, I ran after it frantically."Mom! Dad!"My cries diss

"No! This isn't right… Mom, Dad, stop. Go check on Amy!"But Mom hummed a lullaby as she opened my closet. She took out my favorite white dress, her eyes glazed with a terrifying, dreamlike tenderness.Mom's movements were mechanical as she walked over to Amelia, who was huddled in the corner, and began to dress her.Amelia didn't resist at all. She was like a lifeless doll, letting Mom move her however she pleased."Ninette, you looked the prettiest in this dress," Mom said as she carefully smoothed out every wrinkle. "When I took you to the park as a child, everyone said you looked like a little princess…"She finished dressing Amelia, then carried her to the couch and sat her upright, as if she were posing a doll. After taking a couple of steps back, Mom curled her lips into a delirious smile. "See? Ninette came back to us. What a good girl!"Dad sat at the dining table, eating silently, as if none of this concerned him. However, his grip tightened around his fork so hard tha

Mom's voice came out hoarse, trembling with a hint of disbelief. "Amy, be honest. Did you take your father's beer? And the cheese sticks from the fridge, was that you?"Amelia's eyes quickly filled with tears as she curled her lips into a wounded pout. "Mom, what are you talking about? I don't understand.""Shut up!" Dad suddenly shouted, his voice so harsh that Amelia flinched."Your sister has sorted the trash properly since she was little. She would never throw bottle caps down the drain. And these wrappers were found between the couch cushions. Are you seriously going to keep lying?"Terrified by a side of Dad she had never seen, Amelia's face paled. Her eyes darted around, but she still tried to hold her ground."It wasn't me. It was Ninette…"Mom stared at Amelia's angelic face, and a chill ran down her spine. She suddenly shot to her feet and rushed into Amelia's room, tearing through everything like she had lost her mind.In the end, she pulled out several crumpled, empt

I watched everything unfold in front of me.Mom had fainted, Amelia was clutching her face in tears, and Dad was so shaken that he couldn't even form a sentence.Panic surged through me.This was all my fault. It was my rotting, hideous body that had frightened them. No wonder Mom refused to acknowledge me.As I was overwhelmed by guilt and resentment, my consciousness began to fade. When I woke up again, I was drifting in a place that felt ice-cold.Dad stood nearby, his eyes swollen and red, while a doctor spoke to him in a low voice, "Preliminary findings indicate death by asphyxiation in an enclosed space. The exact time of death will require the medical examiner to…"Before he could finish, Dad dropped to the ground with a thud. He gripped his hair with his hands as a broken cry tore out of him."It was me… I'm the one who locked the suitcase. I killed Ninette!"I wanted to go to him, to tell him it wasn't his fault. It was the suitcase that was faulty. If only we had use

The moment the zipper was pulled back entirely, a thick, cloying stench filled the air after being trapped for so long.It sent the crowd recoiling in an instant."Ugh…"Dad was the first to break. He doubled over as his stomach turned, and he vomited onto the marble floor. He clutched his knees, his body shaking uncontrollably.Several flies buzzed over, drawn by the scent, circling as they searched for a place to land on the curled figure inside."Get away! Get away from her!"It was as if a nerve had snapped. Dad suddenly jolted upright, his eyes bloodshot as he waved his arms frantically, trying to drive the flies away. His movements were frantic and desperate, a futile attempt to ward off a reality that could never be undone.Mom, who stood closest, didn't retch. Instead, it was as if her soul had been hollowed out, leaving her rooted to the spot. Her eyes widened as she stared at the small, misshapen figure inside the suitcase.Mom parted her lips, but no sound came out.

Satisfied, Lauren finally stood up and left. The moment the door closed, Amelia cheered and threw herself into Mom's arms, her face flushed with excitement. "This is awesome! We can go out and have fun tomorrow. Mom, you're amazing!"Mom returned her hug, but there wasn't much joy on her face. Instead, there was a trace of complexity and exhaustion as she said softly, "I'd do anything for you, sweetie."But I knew Mom had endured far more than she let on.Before Lauren left, she had lowered her voice into a sharp whisper, and I caught every word she said."You were pretty gutsy when you slapped Micah back then, weren't you?"Then, in the shadows of the entryway, I watched as Mom raised her own hand and slapped herself, over and over again. Even now, the faint red welts on her cheeks hadn't faded yet.Amelia seemed to sense something was off and asked quietly, "Mom… did you get a ticket for Ninette, too?"Mom's gaze flickered before she answered a little too quickly, "No."At t
