Ainsley

The forest always felt different at dawn—quieter, softer, like the world held its breath just long enough for me to pretend I was normal.

Not the Alpha’s daughter.

Not the soon-to-be-eighteen-year-old girl with a whole pack waiting to see who the Moon would chain her life to.

Just Ainsley.

My feet hit the packed dirt trail in a steady rhythm, cool air biting at my cheeks as I pushed myself harder up the incline. Running cleared my head. It always had. My wolf hummed beneath my skin, alert and powerful, settling into the pace like she’d been born for it.

We were, really.

Second-born. Not destined to lead, not expected to carry the pack on my shoulders—that was my brother Kieran’s path. At Nineteen, he was calm under pressure, already acting like the Alpha he’d soon be. Yet he still hadn’t found his mate, despite his visits to all allied packs.

The whole pack whispered about it. Quietly, respectfully, but they whispered.

Which is exactly why my father was currently planning the largest eighteenth birthday the Silver Shadow Pack had ever thrown. I’d heard him on the phone last night—three different alphas, two distant allies, and a regional council representative at least would be attending.

All for me.

Or rather, for my mate. Whoever he ended up being.

I tried not to think about that part too much.

Because what if the Moon paired me with someone who didn’t want me the way I was? Someone who saw “Luna” and expected polished perfection—heels, designer clothes, smiling pretty, hosting pack teas like a trophy on display?

That wasn’t me.

Never had been.

I liked my hoodies worn and my jeans ripped. I liked training until my muscles burned. I liked the quiet satisfaction of learning healing techniques from the packs top doctor Mari after school, memorizing herbs, pressure points, and early intervention techniques that would help save lives in battle. I liked purpose.

The wrong mate could take that from me.

The thought made my stomach curl, and my wolf bristled in agreement.

We won’t be caged.

She always said it with such certainty. I wasn’t convinced.

By the time I reached the ridge overlooking pack territory, the sun had finally broken through the clouds, casting golden light onto the rooftops of home. Cars were already pulling out from the houses below—pack members heading to work or school. Normal life.

My phone buzzed in the pocket of my running tights. I groaned.

Probably Dad again. He’d been hovering lately, trying too hard not to show how worried he was about the idea of my mate being from a rival pack, a pack with outdated views about women, or worse his fear that I also wouldn’t find my mate and people would start to question what was wrong with his bloodline.

I checked the screen.

KIERAN:

Where are you? Dad’s looking for you. Something about the party.

I rolled my eyes and typed back:

AINS:

Running. Tell him to chill.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Reappeared.

KIERAN:

He’s not going to chill. You’re his only daughter and he’s stressing about fifty alphas showing up to sniff you out.

I snorted. “Great phrasing, Kieran,” I muttered under my breath.

Before I could reply, another message came through.

KIERAN:

Also… he’s proud of you. But he’s in that overprotective “my baby girl” mode. Good luck.

I sighed, turning toward home.

My birthday was three days away.

Three days until everything changed—whether I was ready or not.

My wolf lifted her head, sharp and alert, as if she sensed a shift in the wind.

He’s out there, she whispered.

I swallowed hard.

And for the first time, I wondered—not for the pack, not for tradition, not even for my father—but for me…

What if finding him cost me everything I wanted?

AINSLEY The room is quiet. The soft glow from the lanterns spills over the wooden walls, casting gentle shadows across the floor. I sit on the edge of the guest bed, my hands folded in my lap, still trembling slightly from the adrenaline of the previous night. Raithe is standing near the door, surveying the room as if he can already see every danger, every angle. My wolf hums low inside me, sensing his control—but I don’t want him to leave. I swallow hard. “Raithe…” He turns, amber eyes meeting mine, warm but watchful. “I… can you stay with me tonight?” My voice is quiet, almost timid, but my wolf insists. Yes. Stay. Protect. Raithe’s expression softens immediately. A flicker of relief crosses his face. “Of course,” he says simply. He crosses the room and sits beside me, careful not to crowd, but close enough that I can feel the heat radiating from him. My heart hammers as I lift my hand, brushing it against his. He doesn’t flinch; he intertwines his fingers with mine. “You do

RAITHE The first thing I notice as we cross the boundary of Blood Moon territory is the sharp shift in the air—thicker, heavier with anticipation, power, and the scent of wolves who are always ready. My pack is already alert. Eyes track the vehicles as we pull up. Whispers ripple through the warriors, the alpha guards straightening in rigid respect. And then… Dax steps forward, nodding at me subtly, as if to say your mate is here. Handle it. I glance down at Ainsley. She’s clutching the strap of her bag tightly, looking around with wide eyes. I can feel her nerves, her curiosity, and the almost imperceptible thrill that comes from stepping into a new world—our world. “Stay close,” I murmur, voice low, just for her. Her hand finds mine. Soft. Warm. Reassuring. The moment she steps out of the car, the pack reacts. Some hold their surprise respectfully; others can’t hide their awe. Ainsley carries herself with quiet strength, and even unfamiliar wolves sense it. My wolf rumbles sof

The night air was crisp, carrying the mingled scents of Silver Shadow territory—pine, damp earth, and faint traces of the celebration fading behind us. My wolf was calm now. Focused. Controlled. Finally. Ainsley walked beside me, her hand tucked into mine. Each small movement of her thumb against my knuckles grounded me, reminded me that the chaos I’d carried for months was finally still. The mate bond wasn’t just a tether—it was the anchor my wolf had been craving. Her conversation with her parents had been tense but decisive. Alpha Thorn had allowed her to leave with me tonight, though I could feel his lingering vigilance in every step. Her mother had been gentle, proud but hesitant. Kael had been protective, teasing in the way only a brother could be. But now it was time to move. We stepped off the edge of the gathering grounds, heading down the gravel path toward the waiting Blood Moon vehicles. Torches flickered behind us as the party slowly returned to normal, but our focus w

The moment Raithe and I step back into the glow of the party, the entire atmosphere changes. Whispers. Stares. Shock. Curiosity. Fear. Excitement. It’s like ripples spreading across a lake—no one knows what this new reality means yet, but everyone can feel the weight of it. My father’s gaze locks on mine the second I cross the threshold. His expression is almost unreadable—stern Alpha, protective father, wary diplomat—all tangled together. Raithe stands slightly behind me, not hiding, just giving me space, which somehow draws even more attention. His presence is a solid warmth at my back—reassuring, grounding. My mother steps forward first, eyes shining but unsure. She cups my face gently. “Are you alright, sweetheart?” I nod. “I’m okay. Really.” Her breath leaves her shakily. My mother is strong, tough, steady under pressure—but this? The mate bond snapping into place between her daughter and the Alpha of the most feared pack in our region? It shakes even her. Kael join

Ainsley’s hand stays in mine as we stand in the clearing, moonlight pouring around her like she was carved for it. Her fingers fit perfectly—too perfectly—and every instinct in me growls with satisfaction. My wolf is pacing, tail high, chest out, smug as hell. Mate. Strong mate. Good mate. Show us more. I roll my eyes at him internally, but I can’t deny the truth— Every second I spend with her, the bond pulls tighter. Ainsley hesitates, then steps back just enough to look up at me fully. “There’s something you should know,” she says, voice softer than before. Nervous. Serious. My spine tightens. I straighten. “Tell me.” She takes a breath—slow, grounding—like she’s preparing to give me something fragile. “My wolf… she’s not normal.” My heart stutters. “What do you mean?” She lifts her hand, tilting it so moonlight spills across the soft skin of her wrist— And suddenly silver glows beneath it. Not a tattoo. Not magic. Not something artificial. A mark. Moon-bright. Ali

For a long moment after the bond snaps into place, I can’t hear anything except the thundering of my own heartbeat. The cheering, the whispers, the rustle of clothes and movement around us—they all fade into a blur. All I can feel is him. A warm, fierce pressure against my chest, like my soul is leaning forward toward his. My wolf is absolutely losing her mind. MATE. OUR MATE. OURS, OURS— She’s practically somersaulting in circles. I’m… shaking. Not out of fear. Not even out of shock. Because the moment our eyes locked after midnight—really locked—I felt something crack open inside me. Something deep and quiet that I hadn’t known was waiting. And now he’s standing two feet away, looking at me like I’ve just rewritten his entire world. Raithe. Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack. Ruthless, feared, battle-scarred, half-whispered-about Raithe. My mate. Goddess help me. He takes a slow step closer, careful, controlled, as if he’s afraid I’ll bolt. His voice is low, rough around t

Raithe The clearing bustled with life around him—voices, footsteps, the faint hum of excitement. But Raithe felt none of it. His senses were narrowed, sharpened, pointed like an arrow at the lingering echo of something he still refused to name. He forced his shoulders back as Alpha Thorn stepped

AINSLEY The moon is high—so bright it looks carved from polished bone—as the ceremony circle fills with warm golden torchlight. My hands tremble slightly as Lyra helps adjust the silver clasp on my cloak. “You ready?” she whispers. No. Yes. Maybe. My wolf is practically vibrating, pacing behi

AINSLEY The festival lights strung between the pines glow like captured stars, swaying gently with the evening breeze. Ainsley I had no reason to linger in the hallway outside Dad’s office. None. Zero. Absolutely no reason. And yet… there I was. Holding a tray of water pitchers and glasses I’d already delivered ten minutes ago, pretending I still had a task that required me to stand in the exact spot where Al
