Lyra’s POV

The Rotunda was still smoldering when I stepped into the light. What was left of it, anyway. Ash clung to the arches like ghostly vines, the marble floor cracked in patterns that mimicked ancient runes. Every stone whispered of betrayal, power, and the one truth no ward could ever contain, I wasn’t theirs to control.

Kael was a step behind me, close enough that I could feel the weight of his presence, but far enough that I could breathe. He always knew when to give me space. I needed it now because the Council had gathered outside and they were waiting to see if I’d become the monster they feared.

“Are you ready?” Kael asked quietly.

I didn’t answer. Instead, I pushed open the Rotunda doors, stepping onto the grand steps where countless rulers had once stood but none of them had returned from death. None of them had broken a god.

The crowd below was a sea of faces, some loyal, some terrified. Councilors, rogue factions, citizens, spies. Their eyes reflected back at me with

Kael’s POVThe Embervault didn’t collapse. It should’ve.We should’ve brought the whole damned mountain down with the way we ignited in each other’s arms. But instead, it held us, ancient stone and molten veins cradling something fragile and volatile: us.Isolde lay beside me, sprawled over the cracked obsidian floor, her bare shoulder brushing against mine, her breathing slowing from ragged gasps to something steadier. The silence wasn’t awkward. It wasn’t suffocating. It was… terrifyingly honest. No masks. No excuses.Just raw aftermath.“You’re quiet,” she murmured, eyes tracing the faint scars along my chest.“I’m never quiet after a mistake,” I said, voice low.Her head snapped up, eyes narrowing. “You think this was a mistake?”I sighed, fingers dragging through my hair. “No. But I know how it’s going to look. To them. To me.”“To her?” she challenged, sitting up, the curve of her spine bathed in the Vault’s glow. “Kael, Lyra is gone.”“I know.” I sat up too, hating how my chest

Kael’s POVIsolde’s fingers barely brushed mine as we crossed the threshold into the Embervault. The ancient ruins hummed beneath our feet, veins of molten rock glowing faintly along the walls like a heartbeat, pulsing, alive, watching. The air was heavy with heat and history, but none of it suffocated me like her nearness did.She wasn’t Lyra. And maybe that was the problem.Because she wasn’t Lyra, and yet she stood beside me with the same stubborn fire in her eyes, the same quiet defiance in the curve of her mouth. She was temptation wrapped in leather and shadows, with a gaze that seemed to strip away every wall I didn’t know I was still holding up.“We shouldn’t be here alone,” I said, voice low, hands flexing at my sides.Isolde turned to me, a smirk tugging at her lips. “Afraid of being alone with me, Kael?”The way she said my name, slow, deliberate, like a challenge, made my skin prickle.“I’m not afraid of you.” My tone had the edge of truth and a lie.Her gaze darkened, ste

Kael’s POVThe fragment burned through the lining of my pocket. We rode through the forest, branches clawing at our faces, the silver pulse of Athyra’s essence seeping through the fabric like a living heartbeat. It wasn’t meant to be held like this. It wasn’t meant for men like me. Isolde rode ahead, fierce and untamed, as if the trees dared not touch her. She hadn’t spoken much since Blackthorn. Neither had I. But the air between us was thick with the things we weren’t saying. We needed a place to regroup. And the Sanctuary was close. We found it at dawn. A crumbling ruin, swallowed by ivy and ash, nestled in a hollow where the land felt… quieter. Sacred. The kind of place where whispers hung heavier than shouts.“This is it?” Isolde dismounted, eyeing the moss-draped pillars. “Your grand hideout?”I slid off my horse, lips quirking. “It’s more charming on the inside.”She snorted. “Like you, then?”The banter was a thin veil, but gods, it felt good.Inside, the Sanctuary was dim, sh

Kael’s POV “You want us to what?” I asked, not bothering to hide my disbelief.Selric, the Council’s spymaster and a man with the charm of a wet boot, folded his arms. “Infiltrate the masquerade at Blackthorn Manor. Blend in. Find the Athyrian heir. Quietly.”Beside me, Isolde gave an exaggerated sigh. “Kael doesn’t do quiet.”“And you?” Selric sneered.“I make up for his lack of subtlety.”Her smirk made Selric grimace. I liked that about her. She could rattle a man with a glance.“Blackthorn is hosting nobles from every surviving warded lineage,” Selric continued. “Rumors say one of them possesses a fragment of Athyra’s essence. We need that fragment before the Bloodmarked Order does.”He tossed a pair of masks onto the table. One obsidian black. The other, a delicate, silver filigree with patterns of thorns.“Your disguises,” he said. Isolde held up the silver mask, arching an eyebrow. “I’ll take the dagger over this any day.”“You’ll take both,” Selric snapped.By nightfall, we s

Kael’s POVWe were knee-deep in mud and lies by dawn. The marshes south of Red Hollow weren’t on any council map, but I knew them well. Forgotten trade routes. Smuggler trails. And tonight, a perfect trap.“You could’ve mentioned the swamp,” Isolde muttered, her boots squelching with each step.“I’m giving you the full Red Hollow experience,” I said dryly. She shot me a glare. “How thoughtful. Next time, include a map. Or a boat.”The plan was simple. A rogue faction of the old Regent’s loyalists, remnants of the Bloodmarked Order, were attempting to smuggle enchanted weaponry out of the city. We had intel they’d be passing through the marsh. What we didn’t anticipate was how well-armed they’d be.“They’ve doubled their numbers,” I said, crouching behind a half-sunken stone pillar. From here, we could see the silhouettes of at least two dozen mercenaries moving crates under cloaked wagons.Isolde’s eyes narrowed. “So much for subtlety.”I glanced at her, noting how her braid was alrea

Kael’s POVIf there’s one thing the Council of Red Hollow excelled at, it was theatrics. High stone arches loomed over us as Isolde and I walked side by side into the Great Hall. Gold banners draped like veils of a forgotten empire, masks of civility covering rot beneath. Every Councilor wore their finest, robes so heavy with jewels it was a miracle their necks weren’t snapped from the weight of their own arrogance.“Are we here to listen, or are you planning to burn bridges?” Isolde asked under her breath.“Depends,” I muttered, eyeing the smug faces lined before me. “How flammable do you think they are?”Her lips quirked. “Highly. And I’m carrying oil.”Gods, I liked her.The Regent of Arms, a skeletal man named Orvin, slammed his staff against the marble floor.“Kael of the Ashen Vanguard,” he intoned. “You stand before the Council accused of undermining Red Hollow’s sovereignty, waging unauthorized war, and harboring powers that could….”“Save your breath, Orvin,” I interrupted, s
