The firelight flickered against the stone walls, casting shifting shadows as Selene paced the length of the chamber. The tension in her body refused to settle, her muscles coiled tight from the night’s battle. She had survived the ambush. Barely. But the true danger wasn’t behind her. It was standing in the doorway, watching her like a wolf cornering its prey.

Ronan.

She could feel his presence, the quiet intensity of his golden eyes fixed on her. The air between them was thick with something volatile, something she refused to name.

“You’ll wear a hole in the floor if you keep that up,” he said, amusement lacing his deep voice.

Selene halted mid-step, turning sharply to face him. “I should have left when I had the chance.”

Ronan pushed off the doorframe and took slow, measured steps toward her. He moved with a confidence that made her blood hum with frustration—and something else she didn’t want to acknowledge.

“And yet,” he said smoothly, “you didn’t.”

Selene clenched her fists. She hated how he did this—how he unraveled her control with so little effort. It wasn’t fair. Nothing about Ronan was fair. He was too strong, too alluring, too dangerous.

She narrowed her eyes. “I had a mission.”

His gaze dipped slightly, just for a second, before he met her eyes again. “And now?”

Selene’s breath caught. She could still feel the heat of battle on her skin, but the way he was looking at her made it clear this was a different kind of war.

Now she was trapped in his stronghold, surrounded by his people, with no clear escape. She wasn’t a prisoner—at least, not technically—but she knew better than to think he’d let her go easily.

Now, she wasn’t just fighting against him. She was fighting against herself.

Her fingers twitched at her sides. “Now I wonder if trusting you was a mistake.”

Ronan’s lips curled into a slight smirk, though his eyes held something deeper, something unreadable. “You don’t trust me,” he said quietly. “But that’s not what’s bothering you, is it?”

She hated that he could read her so well, that he always seemed to know what was beneath her words.

“Stay out of my head, Ronan.”

“Then stay out of mine.” His voice was softer now, but no less intense. “You’re not the only one fighting something here, Selene.”

Her breath hitched. She didn’t want to ask what he meant—didn’t want to acknowledge the weight in his voice.

But then he moved closer, and suddenly there wasn’t enough air between them.

Selene forced herself to hold her ground, though every instinct screamed at her to step back. Not because she feared him—no, Ronan had never given her reason to fear him.

She feared herself.

He reached out, fingers brushing against her wrist. The contact sent a jolt through her, sharp and immediate, like lightning meeting water. It was barely a touch, nothing more than a whisper against her skin. But it held weight.

Selene didn’t pull away.

And that was the most dangerous thing of all.

She wasn’t sure how long they stood like that—locked in a silent war neither of them dared name. But the moment shattered when Ronan finally stepped back.

The loss of warmth was almost worse than the touch itself.

Selene exhaled sharply, turning away before he could see the turmoil in her expression. She needed space, needed air, needed—

“You’re shaking.”

His voice was quiet, but the words struck like a blade.

Selene’s fingers curled into her palm. He was right. Beneath the adrenaline and the frustration, her body was still reeling from the fight. The ambush had been brutal, and she had barely made it out unscathed.

She didn’t want him to see her like this. Weak.

“I’m fine.”

Ronan’s silence was heavy. Then, before she could stop him, he reached for her arm, gently this time, his fingers skimming over the tear in her sleeve.

She flinched before she could stop herself.

His expression darkened. “You’re injured.”

“It’s nothing.”

He made a sound low in his throat, something close to a growl. “Sit.”

She shot him a glare. “I said I’m fine.”

Ronan stepped forward, his presence overwhelming. “And I don’t believe you.”

The words hung between them, a silent challenge.

Selene knew she could refuse. She could push him away, throw up her defenses like she always did. But she was too tired to fight this battle tonight.

With a sharp breath, she sat on the edge of the nearby chair, shoulders rigid.

Ronan knelt in front of her, his touch surprisingly gentle as he pushed back her sleeve. Blood had dried along a shallow cut on her forearm—nothing serious, but enough to sting.

He said nothing as he reached for a cloth and a small vial from the nearby table. The room was too quiet, the air too charged. She should have looked away, should have focused on anything but the way his fingers moved with careful precision.

But she didn’t.

Ronan dipped the cloth into the liquid and pressed it lightly to her skin. The sharp sting made her inhale sharply, and his golden eyes flicked up, watching her reaction.

“I thought you said it was nothing,” he murmured.

She narrowed her eyes. “I’ve had worse.”

His jaw tightened. “That doesn’t mean you should ignore it.”

Selene swallowed. She wasn’t used to this. Not from him. Ronan was fierce, ruthless when necessary—but there was something else here, something softer beneath the rough edges.

“Why do you care?” The words slipped out before she could stop them.

His hands stilled against her arm.

For a moment, he didn’t answer. Then, his gaze lifted, and something in his expression made her pulse stutter.

“Because,” he said, voice low, “I don’t like seeing you hurt.”

Selene’s breath caught.

She wanted to look away, to pretend she hadn’t heard the quiet sincerity in his tone. But she couldn’t.

Ronan finished tending to her wound, his fingers lingering for just a second longer than necessary before he pulled away.

The sky was painted with the deep shades of twilight as the moon rose higher, casting its ethereal glow over the land. The world felt suspended in time, as though everything had led to this moment—this decision. Selene stood at the edge of the cliff, the wind tugging at her hair, her thoughts as turbulent as the sea crashing below. The weight of the world pressed heavily on her chest. She had never imagined that the final choice would come down to this: the past, the present, and the uncertain future.Behind her, Ronan stepped closer, his presence as steady as ever, like a shadow that had been following her all this time, but never once imposing. His soft breath on the back of her neck made her shiver, but not from fear—more from the deep, unspoken connection that had been growing between them. It was real. It had always been real, even when she had denied it.“Selene,” Ronan’s voice was calm, but there was an edge to it, as if he too had been waiting for this moment to arrive. “You d

Selene’s heart ached as she stared at Kael, standing across from her, his face a storm of emotions. His eyes—once filled with a deep affection for her—now held a raw intensity that could have broken a weaker soul. She knew the hurt was there, the pain of her choice, and yet she couldn’t bring herself to change it.Ronan, standing just behind her, was silent, his gaze flickering between her and Kael. He had sensed the tension thick in the air since Selene’s confession, but the silence between them now was more deafening than any words could have been.“Kael,” Selene began, her voice trembling despite her attempts to remain strong. She took a tentative step toward him, but he recoiled, a flicker of something darker passing over his features.“Save it,” Kael snapped, his voice cold. “I get it. You chose him.” His hand clenched into a fist, and his body seemed to vibrate with the energy of the anger he was trying so hard to suppress. “But don’t think for a second that you’ve gotten rid of

The night air hung heavy with unspoken words as Selene stood in front of the gathered group, her heart racing. Ronan stood beside her, his hand resting lightly on her arm, a silent show of solidarity. It had taken them days to come to this moment, the decision to make their relationship public. They could no longer hide the truth from the people closest to them. It was time to stop living in the shadows.Selene took a deep breath. She had always known this day would come, but that didn’t make it any easier. Her gaze swept over the faces of their group—Cassian, who had a concerned frown on his face; Varian, who was unusually quiet; and Kael, standing a little to the side. His expression was unreadable, but his body language spoke volumes. His arms were crossed, his eyes darkened with what she could only guess was a mixture of hurt and confusion.“I—I have something I need to say,” Selene began, her voice shaking slightly despite her best efforts to stay composed. “I’ve spent a lot of t

The sound of hooves pounding against the earth echoed through the forest, a rhythm that matched the tumultuous beating of Selene’s heart. The starlit night above them seemed distant and cold as the moonlight painted their path, glistening against the bloodstained earth beneath her boots. She had barely been able to keep up with the group, the pain in her side flaring every time she moved too quickly. But she had to keep going. They had faced the onslaught together, survived the siege—barely—but now, the battle was far from over. The deeper conflict within her burned just as fiercely. The weight of her indecision was suffocating. She could still feel the sensation of Ronan’s healing hands, the way his magic had wrapped around her wounds, his power infusing her with an energy that had been so foreign, yet so welcome. But it wasn’t just the healing that lingered. It was the touch, the warmth of his presence that made her heart flutter against her will. And then there was Kael—silent and

The clang of steel and the cries of battle filled the air as Selene stood at the front, her eyes scanning the chaos that had erupted on the battlefield. Her heart beat in rhythm with the violence, and though every instinct screamed at her to retreat, she stood her ground. Her people needed her. Ronan was by her side, his eyes fierce but weary as he struck down another of the invaders, his strength finally starting to wane. But he was determined, and Selene could feel his resolve fueling her own.“Stay close!” she called out, her voice steady despite the tension in the air. “We’re not losing this!”Kael, his movements swift and dangerous, rushed forward, cutting down an enemy soldier who tried to flank them. Cassian was close behind, his usual smirk replaced with a grim expression as he took charge of a separate line of defense. The air crackled with tension, every movement sharp, deliberate. The battle wasn’t just a fight; it was survival.Selene’s mind raced through strategies, calcu

The air was thick with tension, every heartbeat echoing like war drums across the crumbling temple grounds. From her vantage point atop the weather-worn balcony, Selene watched the horizon darken—not with clouds, but with the approaching horde. The siege had begun.Below, Kael barked orders, still limping from his last encounter but determined to defend what little ground they had left. The allies they’d gathered—rogue wolves, witches who had once served in hiding, a handful of humans brave or foolish enough to fight—moved in hurried unison, preparing barricades and traps. But the numbers were not in their favor.Selene turned at the sound of approaching footsteps. Ronan stood there, quiet but intense, his gaze locked on the distant army.“They’re moving faster than expected,” he said. His voice was steady, but Selene caught the flicker of tension behind his eyes. “Your brother isn’t wasting time anymore.”“Elias never did,” she murmured, jaw clenched. “But he’s more desperate now.
