Malik’s POV

The rain grew heavier hitting against the windows. I stood at the fireplace trying to get a little warmth.

Meanwhile, something didn't exactly feel right to me, my call with Morwenna hung above me.

Eve had retired to her bedroom for the night after suggesting I leave in order to maintain the peace between myself and Morwenna,

“If only she knew.” I thought to myself

She left before I could speak so I just told myself she was tired and probably needed to rest after the whole drama from today. But my wolf stayed restless

I tried ignoring the feeling gnawing at me, throwing another log into the fire. The crackle from the burning log filling the air,

Images of her eyes during the dinner flashed in my mind, the pain and distance in them. The way her body tensed up whenever Dorian spoke. It was everything from a person still nursing an old wound.

And I had to know the story

I couldn't help the giddiness I felt when she was around me, I had to know I wasn't about to

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 121

Eve’s POV For a long time, I had known, I had known that the earth listened, it remembered, I had known that the trees remember and if you were still enough you would hear the forest answer Tonight, it did not only answer, it reacted I didn’t plan to wander this far from the quarters. I told Malik I needed air, and that was not a lie, but it also wasn’t the whole truth. The truth was that the walls had started to feel like they were leaning inward, and so I just walked, it was either that or it falls on meI walked bare foot against the cool soil, my fingers brushing against the bark that was now rough with age.I noticed the first sign, however subtle. A branch creaked behind me, it wasn’t the natural groan, it was more like something had shifted its weight too suddenly. I exhaled slowly, you are tired, I told myself, that’s all. And then I took another step, the undergrowth rustle to my left, ferns bending as though brushed by an unseen hand. I stopped completely this time, my h

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 120

Malik’s POV You blink a second and you would miss it, distance wasn’t something you noticed all at once especially since it doesn’t announce itself with slammed doors or raised voices, it creeps through small things, pauses where there used to be laughter, you get answers that sound right yet they feel wrong, you find eyes looking at you without fully landing, that’s when you notice it…the space that did not always exist, it was how I noticed she was pulling away She was still beside me, we still slept in the same room, she still spoke and certainly still listened to me, but something in her had folded inward I felt it the first morning after the council meeting She moved through the lodge with ease, her hair braided loosely down her back, she was calm and quiet, a far cry from the usual yapper she was. She poured tea, handed me a cup asked about the rotations, everything was just normal except that she didn’t touch me not even absentmindedly “You seem quiet today,” I said, watc

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 119

Eve’s POV There is a difference between being feared and basically being decided upon, the thing with fear is tha it hesitates, gives you a second to breath, some room for mercy even, but you see, decision is quiet and final, I guess I learnt that the hard way but it was the only way I ever learned rightWhen I think of it, I know I wasn’t meant to hear the conversation, I was certain because the door was warded both types, definitely to keep out eavesdroppers like myself I assume, but then why was so much effort being put into a conversation that solely revolves around me, I had no proof to show the elders against Morwenna so I had to take it whatever they served me The council chamber lights were still on, I thought it was weird, meetings usually ended at dusk…well unless there was war or death to discuss, i didnt realize I had slowed, the sound of my footsteps had reduced to almost nothing, the closer I got the heavier it felt for me, it was like walking into a room full of secr

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 118

Eve’s POV Power has a sound when it shifts, it isn’t loud, nor does it sound like anything we are made to believe about this sound in stories, sincerely, the sound of power is quiet, but it chokes, holds out every sir in your lungs, holds your feet together that movement is replaced with a trembling force, I could tell it was how the council chamber felt before Dorian spoke, I had not been invited and that alone should have been my cue to sit my ass somewhere very far but I am Eve right?I stood outside the caved wooden doors, my back against the cool stone wall, pretending to examine the runes along the corridor, Malik had been called away seconds before now, it was something about patrol coordination, his jaw was already tight when he left and I assured him I would wait, its not like i had expected to overhear anything But the walls of Blackthorn had never known how exactly to keep secrets“We are trying so hard to ignore it when clearly we know, patterns do not lie.” One of the

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 117

Eve’s POV Astrid’s scream sliced through the trees when she finally woke upI thought she was unconscious, she had barely moved after my wolf forced her down. But now she lurched upright with a ferocity that would make one think of insanity. Her eyes were wild and desperate, shining with strange recognition, they remained fixed on the faint markings glowing across my skin.“No,” she choked out. “No, no, no, impossible!”Malik stepped in front of me instantly, a protective wall of muscle and rage. “Stay back,” he growled, voice low and sharp. “You don’t come near her again.”But Astrid barely looked at him. Her entire being stayed stunned as she pointed at me, shaking so violently she had to grip a tree to keep herself steady.“That mark,” she whispered. “That… that mark” Her voice fractured. She gagged on air, as though the words fought her. “it belongs to her.”My stomach dropped, who was she referring to? Malik’s wolf surged beneath his skin. “Enough with the drama, Astrid.” “It’

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 116

Eve’s POV The one thing the human world never took from me was journaling, though Blackthorn took my sense of safety and the human world? Well it took my certainty, but there I slowly learnt how to breathe again, it didn’t matter if I was drowning, I had to breathe. When everything else known to me slipped through my fingers, my beliefs, my relationships and the routines that had carried me through my entire life, I still knew how to pick up a pen and tell the truth, even if I couldn’t say it out loud. Writing was the only place I was allowed to be unfiltered, I wasn’t trying to be careful with my words such that it protects or calms people or gives them the hope I was yet to find, it was just me and my page. I sat on the edge of my bed, journal resting against my knees and my pen, dancing in my hands, the room smelled of wood and pine, a scent that should have comforted me at least but tonight it only reminded me that I was a survivor but it wasn’t in the comfort of my home I lear
