"Sire, we shouldn't be this close to the palace this night, we should have left a while ago. Nobody should link you to what is going on in the palace." One of the men following Lord Vallas said but he just shook his head.
"And nobody knows that I am here by this time." The man leaned on his cane, his fingers brushing the design, the golden Raven. His mind flashed back to the street boy of earlier, the boy was right and at the same time he was wrong. The people who wore the golden Raven on anything other than their amour are the real heroes, the ones who would do anything to protect the Empire even from the emperor. And they certainly don't follow the path of justice, not when Justice is now blinded and led by the partial, not when justice is on the side of those who want the down fall of the empire.
"But sire…" The guard who voiced his complains earlier started again but Lord Vallas replied, his tone razor sharp with his will.
"You can leave if you want to but I will wait to see if they have achieved their mission or if they failed."
The guard bowed his head in defeat as Lord Vallas turned his gaze to the palace and when he saw the spark and the signal before the warning bells started, he knew that the plan had succeeded. "They did it, and now we can leave."
Vallas turned to enter his coach to leave when he heard heavy breathing that was coming closer and shouts too. He turned curiously to see the boy of earlier badly injured as he ran towards him, his face was filled with acute fear that it sent a chill down Lord Vallas throat.
"Help me." The boy begged as he run to hide behind the man.
"You there! Hand him over." One of the boy pursuers ordered as Vallas raised a refined eyebrow.
"It's like you do not know the proper etiquette when presented with one of the nobles. You greet first, with your eyes to the floor." He gritted out as the guards corrected their selves then impatiently asked for the boy again. "And what do you want him for?"
"That is none of your business." The prime minister said from behind the men as the men bowed to him without any prompting from anybody. Their actions showed that this man was the one who hired them and as a principle of his since he hated the man in front of him, Vallas raised his eyebrows in pretend shock.
"You will come to find out that a lot of things concerning him is my business."
"Vallas, don't play like you know him before now, this is not business of yours, just hand over the boy and continue on your merry way and act like we never saw each other by this unholy hour." General Cain gritted out but Vallas just smiled.
"I wished I could do that but you see, I don't know what you want with him and whatever you want with him, I am happy that you shocked him enough to come and meet up with me after he turned me down. Penn is just a very stubborn boy." Vallas replied with a grin as he watched panic pass Cain eyes before he shut down his facial expressions.
"Penn?"
"Yes Penn. That is the boy's name." Vallas replied Cain question.
"And what is your relationship with Penn?" Cain asked curious because that was something which none of his spies told him, after he leaves here, he planned on giving them a stern talking to which none of them by might survive but they deserve it for making him look foolish where this man was and as if to prove his thoughts, Vallas laughs and after laughing for a while, he straightened as he looked Cain in the eyes.
"Certainly not your business." Vallas replied as Cain eyes went angry.
"It is because I am about to take him into custody for stealing."
"I didn't sire." Penelope voiced urgently from behind the man she was hiding, she didn't want to die and she knew that her death was sure the minute they drag her away from here.
"I know Penn, you are not the type who steals. I can vouch for him." Vallas fibbed.
"Careful Vallas, you shouldn't vouch for strangers."
"He isn't one." Vallas drawled, making a split decision that he hope wouldn't back fire at him, after all he did offer the boy a chance at something better earlier on but he said no, maybe he would change his mind given the circumstances. "He is my ward."
"Pardon me." Cain asked in a ludicrous tone.
"I know, the boy didn't take the death of his parents well, he ran away and I found him. Hopefully he will chose to come home this time." Vallas fixed Penelope with a look that made her lower her eyes.
"How come nobody knows of this?" Cain asked.
"Why? Are you keeping tabs on me?" Vallas asked with an amused look on his face.
"I keep tabs on everybody." Cain replies as Vallas shook his head.
"The brat ran off, I can't really declare someone is my ward when he is missing, can I?"
"You are doing this not because he is, I don't know what you are playing at but you won't win." Cain gritted out, getting into Vallas face to show his anger while Penelope went behind Vallas to hide again.
"You know that I don't bother to play any game if I am not going to win." Vallas returns to Cain stepping closer to him.
"Sire." Penelope whispered softly but the whisper had the effect she wanted. The two men broke off their stare off games and retreated. Vallas gave a mocking bow to Cain as he held her wrist and dragged her off. When they left the Prime minister, Vallas let go of Penelope like she burnt him.
"Tell me one reason why I should not hand you over to him." Vallas gritted out, shocked by the discovery he just made when he held on to her wrist.
"Because you just lied to him to save me. Thank you for that." Penelope replied as she kept on with the large pace which Vallas was walking with although she was practically running to keep up with him but slowing down wasn't an option. None of Vallas men bothered to spare her with any look and if she wanted to survived, she would not leave this man presence for the next few hours at least.
"Thank you is not going to change my mind about keeping you alive. What happened between you and him?" Vallas questioned as Penelope face turns into a grimace.
"He just doesn't like my face." Penelope lied as Vallas stopped, turned to her and let her see the wrath on his face.
"Never lie to be when I ask you a question child. What. Happened. Between. You. Two?"
"I saw him kill a street child." Penelope whispered as Vallas laughs.
"Just that, he could always say you are lying and denying it, it is not like it will tarnish his reputation or do any harm to his new position."
"He promised earlier today that he was going to create a safe haven for the homeless, especially the children, before he killed the boy, he made mention of the fact that he will Kill us all instead, ridding the empire of us because we are underserving and not worthy of being among the empire… something along those lines." Penelope remembers the scenes as she wrapped her arms around herself.
"His campaign scheme… out of the window." Vallas laughs again. "Get me a room for the night in one of the inns, we are not leaving tonight. We will leave first thing tomorrow morning and our new member need to have food in him and a place to rest."
"What do you mean?" Penelope asked in suspicion.
"He will try to kill you no matter what so it is best if you are to remain under my protection indefinitely and also, you are wounded, you need to rest well tonight. Tomorrow will be the start of your new life."
"I don't want a new life."
"You don't have an option, either a new life or no life at all." Vallas said as Penelope nodded her approval one and the man started to give orders. Thirty minutes later when they have settled in a room, after eating or rather, Penelope scarfing down the meal while the man watched, the man chose to speak to Penelope again.
"I think it is time you tell me everything, don't you?" he said as Penelope nodded.
"Of course I will."
"And by everything I mean the fact that you are a girl pretending to be a boy too." The man gritted out, his eyes burning with anger while Penelope looked at him in speechless shock.
Penn tried to run but there was no way she could escape the grasp of twenty men, she was caught within a minute. “Let me go.” She struggled against their hold as she was dragged back to Cain who had not moved from his spot when she had tried to run, fully trusting in his men's capability in bringing her back. “My father will hear of this.” “And how will he, when the person who should tell him will be dead?” Cain said as Penn felt a chill in her spine at his words. Cain had just confirmed that he was going to kill her and there was nothing she could do about it at all. “My father will know that it is you.” Penn bravely said but her voice betrayed her when it came out shaky, displaying her fear for all present to see. Cain leans to her face. “He is going to need something called proof to be able to do anything. You see, unlike that incident of two years ago, this time I will be smarter so that no one can witness this happening. Let us go.” Cain said
Penn watched the carriages stop as soon as he came down from his own carriage with Rima still inside and wondered if Vallas had visitors which she was not warned about? She had just came back with Rima for a trip in town, for a few days they have been here with Vallas as Something had gotten the resistance leaders so worked up that they were requesting for their heirs to be close to them.Penn sighed, someone would think that since Penn was at home that means that she would at least have an idea about what was going on but when she had asked Vallas, he shrugged and informed her that he does not know anything about what was happening. And when she asked him why he had called her home, the crazy man just replied that he did not want his heir to be the only one remaining especially when they have drawn the others back.Penn admit that Vallas's heart was in the right place but most time she felt like she would strangle Vallas.
“Your majesty, I have the perfect idea for what you want to happen.” Cain said two days later in the king's study. The king stared at Cain in surprise, he had not seen Cain this excited since he decided to start punishing the resistance. “I am not sure that I will like this idea.” The king responded.Reflected on Cain's face was the confusion which Cain felt as he did not understand what the reaction of the king. He did not plan for the king to shut him down even before hearing what he had in his mind. “My King, You did not even listen to what I have to say.”“I know.” The king sighed as he dropped the reports he was perusing. “I just hope that it will not waste my time.”“Of course not your majesty sire, I will be very brief with my explanation.” Cain hurried out and when the King gave his nod of approval, Cain started. “You wanted the children o
The crowd was somber, most of the nobles who attended the burial of Denzel attended with the knowledge of why he died, some more than the others.*He angered the resistance so he was killed, His son was discovered as a member of the resistance so they shut him up, he was killed because his son was a traitor…*Those were few of the talks that were flying in the air at that time. The time were Denzel was being laid in the ground and that made the king teeth to grit in anger at the blatant disrespect shown to the noble who died and his living nobles who could not wait for them to be out of the hearing range of the young ones which Denzel left behind before running their mouth. The only persons who were observing the right curtsey was Vallas and his son Penn. The king watched as Vallas placed a comforting hand on Penn's arm and then led him off.“Father.” Chandler called to his father who turned around to con
Penn felt something akin to pity as she watched Denzel stumbling back as if him shifting away from Vallas would somehow make the news unreal and change the fact that Curtis was dead.“No, you are lying. Is this some sick joke you and him are playing to make me lose my cool?” Denzel demanded but Penn could see the pale pallor that Denzel skin seem to have taken.“Not everything is about you Denzel, Your son was a traitor, this is about his death which was caused by his actions and decisions not yours.” Vallas stated as Penn paused.“Of course, he was your son.” Penn realized.“Stop referring to him like he is no more.” Denzel snapped at Penn who shifted back. “Now enough of this game you are playing and tell me where my son is.”“He is dead Denzel.” Penn stated calmly, trying to add feelings into delivering the news. “He was a traitor
Cain had never felt any intense hate for anybody as much as he felt for this brat in front of him. Even what he felt for Vallas was like a tiny flame compare to the inferno he was feeling for this being called Penn.“Are you sure you want to go there?” Cain asked Penn not caring for the audience they were having which was the king and his family.“You brought this upon yourself and let me inform you, my father will hear about this.” Penn threatened.“Is it just me or this whole scene turning into something that is just wasting our time?” The queen asked the king who nodded.“Cain you know better than to bring your personal vendetta here.” The king said firmly as Cain looked around unsure of how the table turned so quickly.“But…” Cain tried to convince the king but Chandler's voice was the one to cut him short this time.“But no
“Did the Prince give you a blow to the head that I somehow did not see?” Stanley asked Penn who rolled her eyes.“I am serious, those who run will be the first to be captured and taken in for questioning. Dispose all your weapons here and let’s go trade the horses for a wagon then rent a night at the inn and after that, we go out and mingle with other in the crowd, maybe grab a wench or two per person and have fun. After all, the reason we are here is because Lord Vallas decided to visit our home and we need to release some steam right?”They looked surprised at the easy way which Penn solved the problem until Stanley clapped his arms together. “Alright, let us start, time currently is of the essence.” He started giving instructions to others about what they should do while Penn started undressing. “Penn is everything alright?” Stanley asked looking at Penn weirdly.“Of course, it woul
Curtis realized too late what the queen might have wanted, the woman replaced her husband with her son, and she would not have done that if she wanted to son to be alive. With that thought, Curtis lunged forward, hoping to sink the knife into the Prince's chest but the Prince disarmed him within a flash.“Thank you for the weapon. Needed it.” Chandler smiled at Curtis who backed away from the Prince in shock.“That is one of the most foolish you have ever done.” Penn growled at Curtis making her voice deeper so that the Prince will not realize that it was her and still she saw the way the Prince's body jerked at her voice like he was recognized who was talking. It was a good thing that Penn tied her head and covered half of her face just like the rest of the resistance.“Thank you for believing in my ability, it is nice when your enemies know what you are capable of.” Chandler grinned towards the direction of
“I think you need to start from the start.” The queen said with her chest pounding. The king could not die, not yet. She still needed to kill the crown prince and make Lance the crown Prince. This was all Cain fault, if he had killed the prince then she would not have felt anything, she would not have done anything other than to sit still and wait for this to happen but it cannot because she will be left with Nothing. The Crown Prince no longer listened to her anymore, not since he came back to realized how many people she had disposed of since his edict. He had refused to listen to her since then or even to be in the same room with her, claiming that the sight of her makes him sick and he was repulsed that she was his mother… that was what he said while he was in the king’s presence but the queen knew what Chandler was referring to.“The resistance are planning on attacking the king today and Curtis shared this
