Chapter 1

Sometimes Karma isn't a bitch because it makes bad people pay for their deeds, sometimes Karma is a bitch because it screws you over right when you need it the most.

Kaitlyn was in tears after she saw wedding photos of her ex-boyfriend with the girl he cheated on her with. She didn't get it, she could have sworn she wished them bad luck. She had been moping around all day and her best friend Sarah was tired of it. So she suggested going to a club downtown to have some fun and drink away her sorrows. It might have been a bad idea, considering it was a Sunday night and they had to go to work the next morning but they did it anyways. A few hours and a couple of shots later, they were both drunk and wild on the dance floor.

Kaitlyn was an average young adult who was just trying her best to navigate life. She had only known Sarah for about six months but she knew her like the back of her hand. They both lived in the suburbs of Nashville Tennessee, not so far from where they worked. Sarah was like the sister Kaitlyn never had.

As they danced, Sarah got whisked away by some random guy. Kaitlyn barely even noticed she was gone, she was in her world at that moment. She danced alone for a while before she felt a pair of arms drape around her waist. She turned around and met the piercing gaze of the man who was now holding her in his arms. Without giving it a second thought, she began dancing with him and his eyes burned with desire as they swayed their bodies to the rhythm of the music.

He boldly ran his hands over her body and she let him, her body responding to every touch. She usually wasn't the kind of person to let anyone grope her in public but she was drunk and everybody else was doing it. Before she knew it, he pulled her closer to himself and pressed his lips down against hers. Kaitlyn almost immediately parted her lips with a moan, permitting him to deepen the kiss. He kissed her with desire like he wanted every part of her. Kaitlyn reciprocated this energy. It registered in her mind that she was kissing a stranger and a voice in the back of her head wanted to stop but then she thought about her ex and she just kept going. So there she was, making out with a stranger on the dance floor.

He eventually pulled away and shifted his head to whisper in her ear. He asked if she wanted to ditch the club and go home with him. Kaitlyn knew it was a bold step but after giving it a second thought, she agreed. She texted Sarah as he drove them away in his Tesla. He had told her his house was just a few blocks away and it was true, they were there in a few minutes.

His house was a two-story mansion and once they were in, he lifted her in his arms and carried her all the way upstairs, to his room. Most of the night was a blur but Kaitlyn could say boldly that it was the best sex she had ever had, as slutty as that may sound. He was all over her.

She was jolted awake the next morning by the sound of her alarm. Following the shock was a terrible headache. She reached for her phone but before she could grab it, someone else did.

She slowly looked up to see who and she immediately met the gaze of a man who looked unfamiliar at first. Then her eyes went around as memories of the night before flooded her head.

"Morning," he said flatly, turning off her alarm and setting her phone on the nightstand. He had already showered and he was dressed in a black suit. He probably had to go to work and it wasn't until Kaitlyn saw his suit that she remembered she had to get to work too.

"Shit I have to get to work!" she exclaimed, springing up from the bed. She grabbed her head with a groan. Her head was pounding and she was sore. It was probably the result of getting manhandled the night before.

"Maybe get dressed first" He responded, stepping out of the room.

Kaitlyn was freaking out. She was going to be late to work for the third time that month and then probably get fired by her boss. She quickly threw her clothes on and the man whose name she didn't even bother to ask, drove her home. He then left immediately.

A voice in the back of her head was telling her she shouldn't have done what she did but she barely had any regrets. She didn't know the man's name and they didn't even exchange numbers so she believed it was in the past already. She hoped it would be one of those things she did and forgot about.

By the time she got home, Sarah was already dressed and ready for work. She told her everything that had happened and Sarah was beyond shocked. Kaitlyn was the last person she would expect to have a one-night stand. She thought it was a bummer they didn't exchange numbers cuz she saw the guy the night before and he was a 10/10.

Sarah had to leave Kaitlyn in the apartment because there was no chance she wasn't going to be late and she didn't want to be late too. Kaitlyn hurriedly took a shower and threw on the first outfit she could put together.

She still made it to work thirty minutes late and she got into her office to meet her boss waiting there for her.

Mrs. Carmichael, a woman in her late forties who Kaitlyn was convinced hated her sat behind her desk in her swivel chair. She was the CEO of the company and she smiled at everyone but Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn was the secretary to the CEO and to some extent, that was a disadvantage because she could easily get caught coming late to work. It was her third time that month so the chances of her getting fired were sky-high.

"I'm sorry" She immediately apologized before Mrs. Carmichael could say anything. "I had a really bad day yesterday and this morning, the water in my apartment was out" she had come up with the lies on her way there. "Please don't fire me, Mrs Carmichael, I promise to come early from now on" She pleaded.

Mrs. Carmichael got up to her feet with a sigh. "Don't apologize to me Kaitlyn" she began, approaching the exit. "I already sold the company, apologize to your new boss" she added and immediately stepped out of the office before Kaitlyn could get another word in.

"What?" her eyebrows snapped together.

The last thing she expected Mrs. Carmichael to say was that she had sold the company. Kaitlyn slowly approached the door leading to the CEO's office, still in shock and she knocked. Almost immediately, a male voice telling her to come in followed and she stepped into the office.

The man who was her supposed boss stood in the office, staring out the window with his back turned to her.

"Good morning sir" She greeted, slightly nervous.

She hoped firing her wouldn't be the first thing her new boss would do.

The man slowly turned to face her and as he met her gaze, her heart dropped to her knees. It was him, her one-night stand.

Her heart began pounding hard against her chest and it took all her willpower not to run out of the office.

He didn't seem so happy to see her either as his lips instantly twitched into a scowl. He walked back to his desk and Kaitlyn stood at the door, avoiding his gaze by all means.

"You're late," he said, almost a growl.

"Yes, I um... I..." she stammered. Her heart was beating fast and she couldn't get out her words. "I'm sorry" she eventually said.

An awkward silence engulfed the room and Kaitlyn shifted nervously on her feet. For a second, she stole a glance at him and she met his piercing gaze. Memories from the night flooded her head and she turned away.

She eventually left his office and she went straight to her desk and buried her face in her palms. She wished she had refused when he asked her to follow her home. It was now her biggest regret.

Later in the day, he had a meeting with all the staff and he introduced himself as Mr. Tyrell Perez. That was the first time Kaitlyn would hear his name and she felt ashamed because she had slept with him.

Sarah found him attractive. It took her a while to recognize him but when she did, she was beyond shocked. She couldn't believe Kaitlyn had unknowingly hooked up with their boss. Now every time she looked at him, that was what she was thinking about.

It was a very awkward day for Kaitlyn but eventually, it was over. The working hours had ended and she was ready to leave. The problem was, she had to tell Tyrell she was leaving. Being alone in the same room and having to talk to him made him super uncomfortable. To make matters worse, he didn't seem to like her the slightest bit. He had this cold personality that frightened her.

She finally summoned the courage and she stepped into his office. She stood at a reasonable distance from his desk. He hadn't raised his head to face her since she had stepped into the room because he was busy writing something down.

"Um... sir..." she began.

"Hold on" he cut her short. He finished up what he was writing and then raised his head to face her, leaning back into his seat.

His gaze was so overwhelming, for a second, Kaitlyn forgot what she was doing in the office.

"What do you want?" His deep, slightly husky voice rang in her head.

"I um..." she began, staring down at the well-polished floor. "It's 5 pm and..."

"Look me in the eye when you're speaking to me" He interrupted.

His voice was so calm it was scary.

Kaitlyn slowly raised her head to meet his gaze. She gulped before speaking up. "It's 5 pm and I'm ready to leave," She said, mustering some confidence.

"Did you look through the files I asked you to?" he asked, not breaking eye contact for a second.

"Yes, I looked through everything" she responded.

"Ok then," he said, returning to the folder in front of him.

Kaitlyn turned on her heels and began walking towards the door. She was more than ready to leave. Then just as she was about to grab the door handle, he stopped her.

"One more thing" His voice brought her to a halt.

She turned back to face him and he took a short pause before speaking up.

"Do you always have one-night stands on Sunday nights?" He asked, his gaze piercing right through her soul
