We arrive at Roman’s section of the pack around lunchtime the next day. Ryder spent a long time in the woods last night... and then again in his tent this morning. But when he finally got into the car, he seemed a lot more relaxed.

Amelia and I have been able to hold hands and touch each other again, though we’re still keeping it pretty innocent. We don’t want to fuck things up too soon.

When we pull up to the packhouse, Roman is waiting out front with his mate, Sonia, and their literal pack of pups. I mean—they’ve got ten kids, ranging from ten years old down to a newborn swaddled in blankets.

Honestly, I don’t know how her vagina is still functioning. Did she get reconstruction surgery? Like, yeah, our wolves regenerate, but there have to be limits.

“Amelia! Kennedy! Ryder! It’s been way too long since I’ve seen you and your families,” Roman says as he pulls us into a huge bear hug. And I mean huge. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was a bear shifter, not a werewolf. “What’s it

Soon, we'll get answers about Ryder's wolf and why it 1) came early and 2) is so powerful. What do you guys think?

  • Mother, May I   Epilogue - Lucifer

So much pain. Those fucking angels! They killed my mate. They killed MY CHILD! And then they tried to kill me. I had enough power left within me in order teleport away from them to the edge of Tartarus. But I was bleeding heavily from a wound that eviscerated my stomach and just missed my heart. Otherwise, I would have died right then and there. I used all the power that I had left to make my way through the cyclopses, the hydra, the river of fire. And then I make my way down the labyrinthine walkways, looking for my first love. Only she will have the power to heal me. Only she will have the power to bring me back to what I was before. I don’t know how long it took for me to get to her. How much blood flowed from my body. How much pain I felt. How low I had to get. I laid on the ground, covered in dirt, dehydrated, and weak. And then I feel someone push me with their foot.

  • Mother, May I   Chapter 99 - Josefina

It’s hard to believe the war is over. All that buildup, all that fear... and it was just one, admittedly epic, fight?I guess I didn’t realize how much of war is waiting. Hermes says it’s always like that—but it still feels surreal. The angels are in a tizzy about not finding Lucifer’s body. We haven’t heard anything from their God, so I’m assuming He’s not worried.I mean, it’s been two weeks. Nothing.Gabriel even came to Jacob and told him he could start the process of detaching from the Christian God and giving up his powers.Halfway through the instructions, though, Michael showed up and begged Jacob to remain a Throne for six more months. Just in case. After meeting with Maeve, Dougal, and Win, the responses were mixed. Maeve hated being a Throne—too serious, too stiff, just not her. Dougal? Loved it. He didn’t have a family anymore; his mate died at the start of the war before they had a chance to have kids. He said the emotionless existence was easier than grief.Win was in the

  • Mother, May I   Chapter 98 - Zak

A parent should never have to bury their child. Ever.Even though Nyx wasn’t of our blood—or even our species—she was just as much our daughter as Jared, Summer, or Chris. She was our pup.And even though we only had her for less than a year, the hole she left behind is deeper than I ever thought possible. It’s the worst pain I’ve felt since losing Charlie.I stand with Kayla, Brandon, Jared, Summer, Rowen, Chris, and Esteban. Little Lilianna sits on Chris’s lap, the two-year-old blissfully unaware of what’s happening. The triplets—Nixon, Natalie, and Nolan—don’t understand either, but they can feel the sorrow.Nixon is in Kayla’s lap, tiny hands trying to wipe her tears away. Nolan sits stoically in Brandon’s arms, gripping his father’s fingers like lifelines. And Natalie... Natalie is in mine. She wraps her arms around my neck, pressing kisses to my cheek like she can love the grief out of me.No, they don’t understand—but they know something’s broken.Nathan stands beside Kayla. Fre

  • Mother, May I   Chapter 97 - Devin

I know the exact moment Lucifer dies. We all do.The power in the air vanishes—one moment it’s overwhelming, and the next it’s gone. And just like that, the enemy begins to scatter. Some drop their weapons and run. Others fall to their knees and surrender. There are a few die-hard loyalists to Lucifer’s cause, but they don’t last long. Fae, witches, wolves, shifters, supernaturals, and angels take care of them quickly.Within an hour, the battlefield is quiet. The medics flood the field.Gods and goddesses begin healing in place or teleport the critically injured to surgical tents. Arya and I immediately turn to help the Elite, the pups’ mates, and our closest friends.“Summer! Jared!” Arya calls as she finishes healing a nasty bite on Tomas’s leg. It’s already showing signs of infection.“Here!” Summer shouts, her voice strained.I turn and see Jared carrying her. Her leg is twisted at a sickening angle.“Set her down, Jared,” I say quickly. He follows directions without hesitation, g

  • Mother, May I   Chapter 96 - Nathan

All three of us see the Morning Star stepping onto the field to face the angels, and we know—we’re out of time. We have to get to Nyx now and sever her bond with Lucifer, weaken him enough so the Thrones can kill him.No one seems to be guarding the castle. Not from our side, anyway. I can see demons and gods getting into formation, preparing to join the battlefield, but they’re too slow. The angels are already here. They’ve breached the outer walls, their armor and skin gleaming, their weapons soaked in the multi-colored blood of the evil creatures they’re cutting down.“We need to get inside while they’re occupied,” Rowen says as we run toward the gates. “Before reinforcements show up.”“Anyone see a way in?” Alexander asks, scanning the structure. The gates are obvious—two massive obsidian stone doors, smooth and polished to a mirror shine. They gleam in the combined glow of hellfire and angelic light. You can see where they’ll part, but there’s no handle, no lock, no seam to manipu

  • Mother, May I   Chapter 95 - Jacob

The second we make our way through the gate into the Underworld, we’re all braced to start fighting. That’s the logical thing to do, right?Except—nothing.Apparently, we picked the forgotten gate. There are two guards—and they were both taken out by the initial blast.Either we got really fucking lucky… or we’ve just walked into a trap.Angels pour through the gate behind us, immediately forming a perimeter. No, they can’t stop Lucifer—but they will slow him down.Yeah, I know that sounds brutal. But they knew the score when they signed up. It is what it is.From where we are—five miles south and three miles above—I can see Hades’s palace, where Lucifer’s been playing house with his new queen. We’re coming in from the air, which is probably why they had us enter through this gate.“They know we’re here,” Michael says beside me, his voice grim. “That was not a subtle entrance.”“Solid assumption,” I mutter.“We’re about to be overrun,” Maeve says flatly. “Demons. Gods. All manner of ni

  • Mother, May I   Chapter 94 - Hermes

It is killing me to wait here with the gods while my mates are all scattered across the battlefield.I’m so agitated, my winged shoes are literally floating me a foot off the ground.Josefina is fighting with her parents near the front lines. And yeah, she’s a badass—strong, skilled, smart. But she doesn’t have powers. She’s just a wolf and a warrior. Thank the gods wolves take training seriously, or I’d be halfway to madness already. She’s definitely the mate I’m most worried about.Except then there’s Alexander. He and Rowen are escorting Nathan to the palace—to Nyx. So Nate can kill her and the thing growing inside her. Hecate told us she went into labor this morning. They have to move fast, get through enemy lines, fight whatever hellbeast is guarding her.So yeah, he’s the mate I’m most worried about. And then there’s Jacob. My poor, beautiful Throne. He and the other three newly-forged Thrones are marching right into hell with Michael and the heavenly army. They’re going up again

  • Mother, May I   Chapter 93 - Nyx

The contractions had been coming off and on for the past two days.“Braxton-Hicks,” Persephone had assured me. “It’s just your body’s way of getting ready. They can happen for a long time before real labor starts. I really wouldn’t worry if I were you.”But I knew better.I could feel it. The thing inside me—this abomination—was thrilled. I could feel its anticipation. Its hunger. It had been shifting in my belly, squirming into position. So when I woke in the early hours of the morning, clutching my stomach through a tight band of pain, I knew this was it. I let out a wheezy, breathless scream as the wave of pressure ripped through me.I’d been lying on my left side, head resting on Lucifer’s arm, his other arm curled around my waist. My scream startled him awake.“What’s wrong? What’s happening?” he asked, eyes wide and wild. His voice was all sharp edges—panic and protectiveness wrapped in a growl. He moved to hover over me, caging me in like a shield.“It’s a contraction,” I said t

  • Mother, May I   Chapter 92 - Alexander

The screech that tears through the air above us sounds like a twisted blend of a wolf’s howl, a bird of prey’s cry, and a woman’s scream. We look up.There are seven of them. They have the bloated bodies of pregnant women—distended and grotesque—talons for feet, massive eagle-like wings, and the snarling heads of rabid jackals. Their swollen bellies aren't full of babies. They're packed with the writhing souls of men and infants they've devoured. They wear a bikini made of skulls—one covering each breast and a third over their vulva. It’s grotesque, uncomfortable-looking, and just… wrong. In each hand, they wield two blades: one forged from fire, the other from ice.The Lamashtu.Seven physical aspects of the Mesopotamian goddess of evil. Think Hecate—but split into seven bodies instead of sharing one. And when I say evil? I mean evil for evil’s sake. No cause, no justification. Just destruction. She stole infants straight from their mothers’ breasts. Caused stillbirths. Brought plague
