Chapter 73

“Charlotte.”

William slowed to a stop when he saw tears slipping from the corner of her eye. He reached out to wipe them away.

Charlotte turned her head to avoid his hand. Only then did she realize she was crying again, pathetic and out of control.

William took her by the shoulders and tried to meet her gaze. “Let’s find a place to sit and talk.”

Charlotte pulled free, forcing a thin smile. “I’m fine. My mind just wandered back to when I was a kid.”

She knew she needed to talk to him, but only to get him to sign the divorce papers as soon as possible.

They stood side by side by the small river. Charlotte looked at the river. William looked only at her.

He remembered the day she first learned to walk. Her parents had brought her to his house, excited beyond words. A room full of relatives had taken turns trying to coax her into walking toward them. She ignored them all and toddled straight into his arms, giggling and calling him in her baby voice.
